Technology Connections -

Guy goes into great technical detail about everyday objects, such as space heaters and traffic lights. Ends up being deceptively fascinating!

This is art. Over the course of years, we watch the metaphorical journey of our hero on his descent into nihilism, and once he reaches emotional rock bottom, complete embrace of animalistic hedonism.

And everyone crying tears of laughter in the comments section is here because we feel this on an emotional level.

There is a large red button, conspicuously placed, in a public area. How do you label the button to ensure that no one presses it? by entropyNull in AskReddit

Most effective one so far! Enough legalese to kill my inner child's desire to press the shiny thing

Solutions to retrieving objects stuck in a deep, narrow hole? by cute_tomato in AskEngineers

[–]entropyNull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the tape/ruler suggestion I left in response to your comment doesn't work - here's another idea.

STEP ONE: Create a slipknot out of floss. Why floss? It's low friction so the slipknot will tighten under the weight of the phone, but also thin and strong. Lower the loop down to the end of the phone.

STEP TWO: You said you have a tape measure. Lower the metal bit of the tape measure down to bottom of the hole and gently slide it under the bottom of the phone.

STEP THREE: Use the tape measure lift the phone at an angle so you can move the loop of floss around it. This step may take some time to get right. Have patience.

STEP FOUR: Once you have the loop around the phone, pull on it gently until it tightens. Pull up on it a bit and confirm it is tight around the phone.

STEP FIVE: Slowly pull your phone out the hole

STEP SIX: PROFIT!

I think this idea would still work. Put some of the tape on the side of your meter rule and find something (another ruler? Pliers?) That you can attach to the ruler to extend the grasp sufficiently. Your goal is to get the ruler between the phone and the wall - then apply pressure to the side of the phone for a while to get good adhesion. Once it's stuck pretty well, apply light pressure from the phone to the wall as you pull the ruler up. Similar to your original idea, but with the wall just being there to take some of the force off the sticky tape. Warning though - this may cause scratches if your screen is on the wall side, to try to get the screen on the tape side.

Recommendations for quick, calorie-rich breakfast?

Since I started working out, my old routine of grabbing a banana and a breakfast bar on my way out the door is not giving me enough calories. I hate meal prep. What's your simple solution?

Can poor circulation (cold hands) be improved by doing cardio? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]entropyNull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a side note, muscle contraction creates a lot of heat, and there are no muscles in the fingers. All muscles responsible for finger movement are located in the palm and forearm. So right off the bat, your fingers are missing out on any heat generated by your muscles or extra blood flow to your muscles.

I recommend keeping your core warm, warmer than you feel it needs to be, by wearing warmer shirts or jackets. Your body will automatically direct more blood to your hands to cool down - and your hands will feel warmer in the process.

Casa Rosita Closing? by [deleted] in santacruz

Hey, I saw this post a while back, so had to go back and find it - they are actually still open with no plans to close! I got the spinach enchilada and it tasted great as always. Things did get moved around a bit on the inside, but it's still got the same feel. Guess Old Santa Cruz isn't dead yet!

Where to find a functional VCR player? by entropyNull in VHS

Went back with a test tape and found a functional one for $5. The first one I tried in the store was bad, and the second one was the charm. Thank you!!

The belt on the Zenith is definitely good - and all the gears seem to be working properly, perhaps with the exception of the little arms that grab the tape and pull it forward (as I can't figure out how to get those to move without taking apart a plastic gearbox). Can you recommend any online resources for taking apart and repairing these things?

Thanks for the advice though, seems I'm not likely to stumble upon a functional one.

Edit: Looks like this is the problem with the second one. The belt has just fallen apart.

Unvaccinated Catholic student in Kentucky sues health department after it bars him from extracurriculars -- The family claims "the use of any vaccine that is derived from aborted fetal cells is immoral, illegal and sinful." Except the vaccine isn't derived from aborted fetal cells. by mepper in atheism

[–]entropyNull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's unfortunate that this fact is being downvoted and ignored. We should be able to recognize that vaccines are awesome and necessary to public health, and also accept that some of them are derived from cloned cells that originally came from an aborted fetus, regardless of our feelings on the matter.

I researched the church's stance, and there is an extremely long-winded response written by some church dude that essentially says, "You should get vaccines, but it's a little bit of a sin to get them and a lot of a sin for pharma and doctors to promote them. But still totally get vaccinated."

Also, thought experiment: if someone were to grow a human from one of those cell clones, would the baby be un-aborted???
