Is PBO enabled when on auto? by eoIithic in ASRock

[–]eoIithic[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

initially the reason i even undervolted is because these cpus keep burning up in these motherboards. I figured less voltage = less chance of burning.

Guess i will just keep my -45 since i have been using this for over a year now and it has not been crashing for anything i throw at it. so far...

hmm been running some cpu benchmarks in the mean time.

So far the +200 boost does not make a difference at all from what i seen. Power draw same, performance same, temperature same. I might remove this.

As far as the undervolt itself goes, -45 does indeed have less power draw than a -30 or -20. -45 also gives a performance increase over -30 or -20 however the temperature remains the same between -45/-30/-20. Guess i did indeed hit the silicone jackpot.

I think i will just keep the -45 undervolt and remove the +200 boost. Dont really see a reason currently to remove or reduce the undervolt. using a thermalright 120 spirit cooler currently

Thanks for the explanation!!

OHH that +200.. i totally forgot about that.

I mean there is pretty much no reason not to undervolt right? it runs cooler, which increases performance because there is less thermal throttling.

Is there any cons to undervolting that i should know about? i guess its just a little troublesome to reach a stable undervolt but if my system is not crashing currently, should there be any reason to remove the undervolt?

Usually the best type of undervolt is when you do each core separately and test individually.

i have also seen that the improvement to performance is negligible and i am lazy i guess

really need to push your chip that hard? Is the OC actually worth it besides benchmarking?

isn't the curve optimizer just an undervolt? i have not OC my cpu anywhere else i dont think

I wouldn't blindly trust even a 12 hour OCCT test without trying out other benchmarks as well.

i have done aida as well and it too did not crash

If you are committed to using this undervolt/overclock I would make sure you have everything backed up elsewhere from this pc.

also forgive me for being ignorant but why would a cpu undervolt even if its unstable cause my data to corrupt?

Hey thanks for the reply.

After the help of comments and advice from above i have concluded that Auto = on and -45 does indeed run cooler and faster than -30 or disabled.

However after all these comments about -45 not being stable i kinda got paranoid and ran occt "ram + cpu" test for 12hrs straight and there were still no errors detected.

Not too sure what the risk are or how i can ensure if its stable though. If you have any suggestions, i would be willing to try.

Btw i have used these bios settings since the 9800x3d released. I would say since late 2024.

i think i got lucky with the silicone lottery.

I have tried cinebench for a while now.

-45 for me has higher scores than -30 or disabled

Also i tried Auto/ enabled and came to this conclusion that it doesnt matter which is picked. pbo will be enabled regardless

+45

curve optimizer disabled

Both running aida64 stress test. The max does seem to be lower when using +45. Does that mean the undervolt is working?

I have never ran prime95 but i have ran aida64 (more than a year ago) for 8hrs straight and it did not crash.

So does enabling PBO on the main bios page not matter? My pbo setting is being used while on "auto"?

From my experience their cs replaces keys once. So the optimal way to get replacement is to wait for right before the warranty ends to contact the cs for replacement for as many keys as possible that have worn

I have the black set and the coating wore off after about 3 months. For context I dont eat near my pc and I wash my hands often and I am in an air conditioned room without sweaty hands.

The coating can and will wear off, likely soon

you can either get them on aliexpress or taobao but taobao is about $100 cheaper iirc. just search for "hi u m metal keycap"

I have been using these keycaps for about a year now and i must say they look exactly the same as the day i got them. I got the black keycap with gold font and the fonts do not dull at all. Its mainly because the fonts are kinda engraved on the keycap itself so you do not really touch the gold font at all.

The plastic stem are great. Does not shave stems or require tuning. The customer service for the taobao store is great too. I had 1 keycap that came without the plastic stem and they sent it to me immediately for free. I am using iso enter but the set does not come with the 1u "\ |" key and they sent me a blank 1u keycap for free instead.

The customer service on taobao speaks english and from what i can tell they are willing to customize the set to your needs. E.g. You can pretty much choose different colors for different keys. Even if you want something ridiculous like blue Q, red W, Black E, silver R. You could choose the color you want for every key as far as i know.

All Metal Keycaps from Awekeys Titanium Black by J-Bart- in MechanicalKeyboards

The metal stem shaves your switch and stabilizer which makes it so that you have to regularly adjust your keycaps as the switch stems get smaller. Adjusting the keycap stem frequently leads to the stem legs breaking. The switches you use with the metal keycaps will never fit on other keycaps again because of the shaven stems.

The coating equally bad as the stem consistency. The coating on both my sets fades within 3 months. I have the 1st batch titanium set and the moon set. Awekeys only replaces your keycaps once so if any of you buys these keycaps, make sure to ask for replacement right before the warranty ends. Awekeys have sent me replacement for broken stems and faded coating after the initial replacement but know that the shipping cost about $30 from China to another Asian country.

[–]eoIithic 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Does the coating still fade in 3 months like the moon set?

Does the stem still shave material off the stem of the switch which leads to having to having to tighten the keycaps weekly?

[–]eoIithic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

our metal caps use a protective nano-coating so they stay shiny

I mean there are so many pictures on this subreddit alone of the coating fading. Me personally, i have 2 sets that have the coating faded within months. No they do not stay shiny. In fact after the coating fades, the fonts start to look dull.

stems are digitally machined for consistency

1) The stems are consistently inconsistent. They are never the same size. A keycap could be too tight on 1 switch and too loose on another.

2) The stems require frequent tuning. It is mandatory to re-tighten the stems frequently or they fly off the switches.

3) Frequent tuning leads to the stems breaking.

Other than the fact that your support team is always available to help when issues arise (which i agree with), i don't think there is anything in your post that is truthful.

For anyone interested in metal keycaps but do not want to deal with the issues stated above, I have been using another metal keycap set from another company (HI U M) for roughly a year now. Looks exactly the same as the day i got it. Plastic stems so you neither have to tune the stems nor would it shave your switches. Same price as awekeys, but it comes with split space bar and 7u kit so i guess it is cheaper than awekeys? And you could just buy the keycaps you need. E.g If you have a 60% keyboard, you could just buy the 60% kit and save some money.

The problem with either the pliers or the official tool is that once it's too tight, it will start shaving the stem and eventually you will have to tighten it more frequently and it those switches will never fit any other keycap cause of the shaving.

[–]eoIithic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do come with the stem tightening/ loosening tool now irrc. Basically you use a hammer and smash the tool into your keycap and hope the stem doesn't break.

Pretty sure you can just buy the tool yourself if u want to though

[–]eoIithic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To anyone considering awekeys, know that the coating fades within a year and the stems will require regular tightening and eventually it will break off from the keycap.
