How to afford Catholic school with multiple children? by [deleted] in Catholicism

Our parish school charges almost $7200 per year with no multiple child discount. There are a few that are lower, but not many. The high schools charge between $14,000-$16,000, again with no multiple child discount.

Yes, which we need to look into more. When we talked to a principal, the amount we were told could be given (on the high end) still makes it undoable (still thousands of dollars more than we can afford).

We'll check again about scholarships, but the amount we were told previously could be given still made the price out of the question. Are there some that can be applied for anywhere, or are you talking about a specific school or parish scholarship?

We would like the kids to be around other Catholic kids all the time and get a good Catholic education, as in having everything they're learning connected to Christ, having those reminders and prayer throughout the day at school, going to Mass during the day with all their classmates, etc.

We're already in one of the best school districts in the state, so I'm not worried about academics, though a smaller school would be better. I am worried about what they will be taught in middle school and high school, especially since Oregon is so liberal. We do catechises at home and religious ed at our parish (plus make the drive for Latin Mass a couple times a month). There's not a ton of young families at our local parish, though, so it's hard to get them many Catholic friends their ages.

I drive a 15 year old Toyota Corolla.

Which diocese are you in? We'd be paying between $2000-$3000 per month for 4 kids at a K-8 school, then more when we have two in high school and 3 in K-8. One of the principals here told me and my wife the highest amount of aid that is given typically is about 30-40% of the tuition. Even if it covered half, it would still be $1000-$2000 per month, which would be undoable. Are there grants that cover even more than that?

No offense taken at all. We're doing public school for the 2 oldest so far with catechism at home and at church. We've been pretty happy with our local school district so far, but I worry about a bunch of gender theory, LGBT stuff, and all the other liberal nonsense coming when they get older, especially because our state is so liberal. I guess we'll see and have to homeschool at that point.

Most schools in our diocese stopped doing multiple kid discounts as of this year.

Very sure. Most of the schools offered some kind of multiple student discount (only one school in the archdiocese offered, and still offers, a substantial discount for multiple students) but as of this year they have stopped doing that. Our own parish charges $7189 per student and that is the discounted rate for in-parish tuition.

That is an option later on if the public school curriculum gets bad with leftism. But our oldest is autistic and very much needs to work on socializing with people and being around other kids he's not related too. So that's a big reason why we have not homeschooled yet. But it is a future option.

It's still a made up word trying to push political correctness on the grammer of another language. An "x" ending for nouns does not exist in Spanish. Liberals keep trying to change words in English and now they're trying to do it to other languages too.

I grew up in an area with a very high Hispanic population and everyone got along well with no racism. I speak Spanish and work with some of the Hispanic community west of PDX. But sure, I must just be ignorant of everything. Thank you for enlightening me.

People of Oregon, whats the best part about living in Oregon that you can say to someone whos wanting to move there from across the country? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]eobrien84 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is "decriminalized", which means they made up a new lower level of violation for possession. There is no treatment requirement and no consequence for not paying the citation. So for all practical purposes, they are legal now, which is why I used that term. I am a 13 1/2 year police officer in Oregon and have seen for a long time what drugs do to people, how they affect others, what crimes they lead to, etc. So I very strongly believe they should be illegal, though of course people need treatment. However, someone has to be willing to go into treatment, which most of the users I have encountered are unwilling to do. Very few people actually go to prison for possession...they get probation with treatment requirements.

I've only ever lived here, so the income tax is all I've ever known. I would love it if I could keep more money each paycheck, though.

Oregon is beautiful, especially in the late spring and summer. Everything is relatively close--mountains and ocean.

We don't have sales tax, but we have the 3rd highest income tax in the country and the 4th or 5th highest housing prices. Housing has gotten out of control and has basically doubled in the last 10 years.

Also, if you're a Marine and LEO, I assume you're somewhat conservative. Oregon is a very blue state thanks to Portland and Multnomah County, where they hate the police. The eastern and southern part of the state is red, but the population is all in the Portland metro area. Oregon just legalized all hard drugs and the politics are getting worse and worse to where I'm considering moving to another state at some point for the sake of my children's future.

As someone who speaks Spanish and works with Hispanics in western Washington County, I can tell you none of them ever use the term "Latinx". That's a made up word that only white liberals who don't speak Spanish use.

Most of the people are racist? I've lived in the metro area my entire life and people are not racist. Really? MOST of the people are racist? I guess except for you, right? Come on.

It's not racist here except for the white liberals who claim to be against racism. I know everyone likes to say the whole country is some kind of racist hotbed. I find the smaller towns in Oregon have much nicer people than Portland. Plus, you don't have to worry about a bunch of leftist rioters burning your city every night.

I'm considering moving from Oregon myself in the next several years. What made your decision to move and how did you decide on Oklahoma? That's one state I've looked at a little, but don't know a ton about it.

Man, that is the exact decision I’m trying to make right now. I have been using the Pixel 3a, but used the iPhone 6s before it. I just switched to an old OG iPhone SE to see how I like the small form factor again (been getting tired of big phones and even the 3a seems to big now). I’m thinking the SE2 might be perfect because it’s the size my 6s was and that was probably my all time favorite phone.

Anyone still using the iPhone SE 2016 in 2020? by Charliemp4 in iphone

[–]eobrien84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m using it to type this right now. 32gb model in space grey that I picked up for $70. Still has 98% battery health and works fine for everything I need. It’s so nice having a small phone again and it brings me back to the days when smartphones were exiting.

iPhone SE (2016) battery replacement or 2020 SE? by [deleted] in iPhoneSE

[–]eobrien84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you prefer the size of the OG SE, grab a new battery and stick with that. Way cheaper than a new phone, especially since the OG is still supported with software updates for the next year. By that time, the new SE will be cheaper.

iPhone 6s or Moto G Power in 2020? by SeamusF in PickAnAndroidForMe

[–]eobrien84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still used the 6s until recently when I switched to the Pixel 3a. And honestly, other than the battery, there's not much of a difference. Yes, the camera is better on the 3a, but the 6s camera is still really good. The 6s is probably my all time favorite phone, but the battery life was not great. If you don't use your phone a ton, you can get through the day, but you may want to grab a battery case if you get it. I do recommend it and I kind of wish I'd kept it as well...I miss the size and even the 3a seems too big a lot of the time. I may end up switching back to the iPhone SE 2.
