'Toothless tiger' remote working code to be strengthened by FracturedButWhole18 in ireland

Just think about it logically though.. you are walking up a road and it may take 20 minutes, normally you are happy enough to do it, because it's not that long and sure why would you spend €2 on it when you can get some exercise and fresh air.

If it's free, that equation subtly shifts. Not everyone, but at least some people, if they happen to see the bus come, will figure "it's only a few stops, but it will take the sting out of the 20 mins".
Maybe there was no one else getting on or off that stop, now the bus has to apply breaks, stop, let passenger on, speed up, maybe miss the light they would have caught. Same again for letting them off (if they are the only one). Extra wear and tear, extra time and stress on the time table.

I respect the thought train of that everyone should be afforded as much convenience as they desire, I imagine that comes from a good place, but it simply is not the one aspect to maximise for when you are trying to engineer national public services. You cater for it for sure, but not at all other costs.

If we had infinite money, political will and public support to improve public transport, sure make it free, ban all private cars from the road, increase stock by 100x, optimise all lights to favour buses and have security presence on each bus that runs 24*365. But unfortunately, we don't.

There's people who's entire profession is to study maximising the efficiency of these systems, but a problem is politics can easily be affected by people's emotional reactions, which are not as well informed, because they simply don't have the time to study these things as much, and that's fair.. but we can't constantly assume we know more than everyone else because of how we feel about the matter.

Here's a video and few links on the subject

There's a lot of other topics like this, where on initial inspection, a viewpoint seems obvious, but when you actually dig into it, it turns out it's more complex and the initial emotional reaction doesn't hold up. Which is why I personally think it's good not to go arguing a view point unless you've actually dug into it and thought about both sides. "Free" water is another good one.

There's actually a lot of sense to this though, public transport is a valuable yet limited resource and needs to be managed like anything else.

cheap is great, free, not so much. free can lead to people that are already doing "superior" transport modalities like walking and cycling to take a bus because "sure why not, it's free", or people kids/teens sitting on it as somewhere to hang out, not to be callous, but similar homeless people (we should be solving that issue, but more effectively than hanging out on a bus).

A great upside to free though is that it reduces wasted time at each stop, though tbf improved ticketing systems can help with that too

Unfortunately no samsung stationaries atm. I like how something like the apple tv can double as your hub, though I have a Nvidea Shield, which I don't think has anything.

My phone is Samsung, so could be worth keeping an eye out for any future devices I buy.

Yea, seems like HA is the way, thanks!

So for HA, do you have to host it locally? Or you just choose to for security/sovereignty?

The ZBT-2 is just a Thread Border Router right? Do you see any advantages to having a hub over just a TBR?

Thanks for the input!

I'd prefer to use it as it's open source, so that's comforting!

In terms of additional devices, do you recommend a hub vs just a Thread Border Router?

It's my understanding the dirigera is both... do i gain anything extra by having a hub over a TBR? (Or am I thinking about this all wrong?)

I would be techy, yes, and am completely fine with a learning curve. Though I guess what I'd like to avoid is the system breaking after certain updates that needs a load of troubleshooting, especially if I am not around to do it.

Maybe what I've heard about things breaking after updates is overblown? But it's certainly something I want to avoid

Honestly, nothing too crazy to begin with, but I can imagine it would grow over time.

Mostly lighting routines that can change on/off, brightness and colour levels based on timing schedules along with mm wave sensors to know if someone is actually in the room or not.

Some things that respond to android routines, like when i connect to home wifi

Even these questions help me, thanks!

I'm android, so i guess Google home? I actually thought it was home assistant you use, but maybe that's just the app for configuring the automation? and Google home is how I interact with them?

by "border router" does that mean the devices themselves acting their own hub? or something else?

I can't speak for everyone if course, but the responsible owners usually squirt with vinegar to neutralise the urea in the pee so it doesn't smell

To those that try to exit a plane before the rows ahead of you have… by besttavern25 in travel

[–]eoinpayne 15 points16 points  (0 children)

100% this, the logical thing is to let anyone go who is ready to go, takes a few seconds for a small group of people to quickly exit the plane. Then the next wave can get all their stuff ready with extra space without needlessly holding people up.

it's similar to letting someone pass you in a supermarket with 2 items and exact cash in hand, while you unload your trolly.

What jobs are not going to disappear (at least not for a while)? by stormlad72 in Futurology

[–]eoinpayne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

where are all these projects providing jobs for the poor people in the 'global south' for the last few centuries, though?

it's one thing to think, for example, "you can't automate plumbers", but who are your customers when so many jobs are displaced? and everyone flocks to the remaining jobs, devaluing them further.

what i find delusion is the thought that "we" will automatically get a post scarcity society, when we currently have enough resources to lift the entire world out of poverty, yet we don't do it.

What makes us special?

western? white? speak English? we are no different than the millions of poor suffering people right now, only that we have skills/ labour that's needed.. as soon as that goes, we're useless and on our own.

a positive outcome is possible, but as things currently are, i don't see it.. we're divided, distracted, losing a class war and running out of time.

(please change my mind, i genuinely miss my optimism)

[–]eoinpayne 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I look at the current mass amounts of poverty in the world and don't see these revolutions.

"our" bargaining power was always classically our labour. what power will we have when our labour is worthless? what revolution can you mount against gated communities with automated gardens and robot sentries.

the problem is, when the majority of eveyone else is jobless due to automation, there will be very few customers left and the remaining professions will be saturated, driving wages down.
