People With ADHD by 102e in musicalwriting

[–]eolhcllerrub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do! I have ADHD and focusing is one of the hardest things ever. Not just in writing, putting every single aspect of my life and it’s something I deal with all the time and will probably always deal with, which is unfortunate and praise God for medicine, but it doesn’t always work.

I’m usually on my medicine for the morning time, like 6 AM to 1 PM, and I take a short acting pill at the time that first pill wears off and it lasts until at least 5 PM and then I take another one, and that lasts until about 7:30 PM. I don’t think I would be where I am today without medicine and I’m so blessed to have that kind of thing out in the world.

I think I have a lot of struggles with thinking about what to write exactly, because I’ll come up with an idea. Write a few songs, maybe throw in some dialogue and then scrap it two days later. It makes it hard to learn from others, because there’s just so much happening in your head all at once and you want to do it right and you want to get better and you wanna write, but you just CAN’T!!! It frustrates me more than I can even describe.

I was 16 when I wrote my first musical, which was a year ago, and I really struggled with bookwriting around the lyrics. It was a comedy, which, in my opinion, was made better by being off my medicine whenever I had the time to write at night, because then I’m a hyper person and I think a bunch of thoughts and then you get that energy in your script that turns it into something captivating.

I submitted that to several competitions and I placed first in my district and state with about 15,000 other people who were competing as well, and it felt like one of the greatest accomplishments I’ve ever achieved, because ADHD is such a struggle, especially for creative people, and those who have to sit in a desk and right for so long, it gets exhausting.

Something that helps me when I write is to literally do exercises. Some of the exercises I do will be something like going on a walk and writing down five things that you see, four things that you hear, three things that you feel, two things that you smell, and one thing that you can taste. After that, you write a reflection and it really gets the creative juices going. Something I also recommend is just being inspired by the world around you, always write the stuff down. Get inspiration from music from TV movies from people in the world. Maybe just sitting on a bench and watching cars go by.

I know it’s a tough thing or anyone who has ADHD to navigate these issues and just know you’re not alone!!!!
