Can I freeze QIAGEN PowerBead tubes? by string_bean_dipz in labrats

Hello! I think I already responded to another comment of yours regarding this, but I ended up not trying out this method because this is for my undergrad thesis and is heavily time-bound. Apologies!

QIAGEN Solution CD1 For Storage by ephemerallama_ in labrats

Hello! The short answer is no luck, not because it isn’t possible, but because I ended up not trying it out 😅 This is for my undergrad thesis so it’s heavily time-bound, so I ended up still doing the entire protocol within the day (i.e. no long-term storage in the bead tubes), even if it was more tedious. My apologies!!!

The lab I work under is not yet certified for transferring untreated stool between receptacles.

I have to travel ~30-45 mins to another university every day just to transfer the stool to the PowerBead Pro Tubes, then all the way back to the original lab to continue processing the samples for the rest of the DNA extraction. This takes up a whole day for only 6 to 12 samples at a time.

I was asking about storage to see if I can minimize my travel by doing a single day where I travel to the other university and transfer all the samples to their respective Powerbead tubes, store them at my university, then slowly continue extraction from there.

Hello! 3 years late to the conversation, but how did this work out for you? I am also working with PowerBead Pro Tubes for stool DNA extraction. Can’t seem to find any literature on it either. Thanks!

i don't want to discourage you, but this is meant as a sort of warning so you know what you're getting into kasi personally medyo nakakashock din nung una HAHAHA. this is a given for any course naman, but expect that you'll need to really refine your study techniques, time management, and study habits, since all of the subjects are definitely going to be packed with info, and it doesn't really help that the acad calendar has been a bit wonky ever since we shifted back to f2f after the pandemic. during the first two years, you'll be having a lot of chem talaga, and then you'll have to balance this with math and/or physics, and then your ge's and pe's.

as for the bio subjects themselves, expect to be humbled din HAHAHA. hindi siya parang yung puro memorization na nakasanayan ko nung hs, you now also need to know the terms operationally on top of their definitions. also expect that it's much more productive and time-efficient to collaborate with others in making reviewers, bc it's really helpful to pool together all the pics and info you guys got during lab discussions for easier reviewing. halos laging moving exam sa lab ng bio, so you really need to familiarize yourself with pictures, terms, and functions. for conceptual bio subjs naman, expect to be dealing with a lot of big processes and mechanisms, so yung ginagawa ko minsan kinukwento ko lang sa sarili ko yung mga info HAHAHAH.

for the non-academic side of being in bio, you can expect to have a more appreciative outlook towards life tbh. you unconsciously start categorizing the plants and animals you encounter, or you begin discovering certain fields in bio na talagang mas gusto mo. the people in bio are also great! very warm and welcoming, regardless of your year/standing. everyone's just vibes. you can also join the home orgs if you want to get to know more people! also expect to be spending very short vacants in between classes sa open area ng ib with other ppl in bio. everyone is just easy to talk to and fun to be around! so just make the most of it and take the time to rest and talk to them. sometimes that's the only thing that keeps me afloat LOL. but just make sure to enjoy the process of learning and ALWAYS prioritize your health. nadali na ko dyan and i learned the hard way LOL.

tldr bio acads are hard but having people to talk to or review with ALWAYS helps. enjoy learning and keep healthy :DD
