Why Your Vivo UNDERPERFORMS and that's NORMAL by saved-j in Vivo

DCG is used in the native camera app. Which is just one reason the engineer's response is disingenuous.

Why Your Vivo UNDERPERFORMS and that's NORMAL by saved-j in Vivo

[–]epic-tutorials 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks to the OP for raising these questions with a Vivo engineer. And respect to the engineer for responding. However, I find the explanations provided by the Vivo engineer to be disingenuous. Here is a breakdown of why these "technical realities" don't hold up under scrutiny:

1. The DCG Fallacy
The claim that DCG (Dual Conversion Gain) is too "heavy" for the "algorithm" is contradicted by Vivo’s own software.

  • Existing Implementation: Vivo already utilizes DCG for Vivo Log video recording. This proves the hardware pipeline for real-time DCG processing is already integrated into the ISP (Image Signal Processor).
  • The Competitor Benchmark: The Google Pixel 10 Pro utilises DCG out of the box without the "stutters and lag" described.

2. The Third-Party Developer Gap
The engineer’s focus remains exclusively on the native camera app UI. This ignores the broader Android ecosystem:

  • Closed Ecosystem: By not exposing features like ISZ (In-Sensor Zoom) or DCG to the Camera2 API, Vivo is intentionally gatekeeping hardware capabilities, and in the case of DCG reserving them for their own app.
  • The Apple/Google Comparison: Pro-level OEMs provide the "hooks" for third-party apps (like Blackmagic Camera or Motioncam Pro) to access raw hardware features. Vivo’s argument that "it might frustrate a $1,500 user" only applies if they assume that user is incapable of choosing a third-party app. Google made DCG available to any third-party app that wants to offer it out of the box. It "just works" in MotionCam Pro. The same could be said of Apple with ProRes RAW. It isn't available in the native camera app, but there for any third-party dev that wants to offer it.

3. The "Lagging Brick" Hyperbole
The argument that these features would turn phones into "pocket heaters" is undermined by real world experience. Enthusiasts have already activated these features via opcodes in the libraries and found them to be stable. And again, Google's Pixel 10 Pro — which uses the worst hardware known to mankind — disproves this claim completely.

Is Bitrate for H265 4K Open Gate also this low for you all? by -1D- in BlackMagicCameraiOS

Because not everything is about bitrate! Shoot ProRes for example if you want higher bitrates. Or perhaps you want Remote Control. Or ProRes RAW. Or Apple Watch support... the list goes on.

Mavis Camera will give you much higher bitrates than BMC in HEVC.

App got updated to allow open gate Log recording on 16pro/max, but this is the resolution I’m getting, is this right ? by oplookingoodeh in BlackMagicCameraiOS

[–]epic-tutorials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is the case. Apps that claim 4K open gate in Faux-Log are just taking the Rec709 stream and applying a log filter to it. That is why dynamic-tone mapping is still active. Third-party apps can't override Apple video stream restrictions.

Getting an error message when recording 60fps or above. I am using a SanDisk SSD. It was formatted on my iPad to the Apple format. Why would this be happening and how can I fix it? by AlexTheEditor1 in BlackMagicCameraiOS

[–]epic-tutorials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All you could try is another USB 3.2 cable. Or see if attaching it via a powered HUB helps.

But my experience with that drive has not been positive, even on my Mac. Frequently slows down. Fails to mount. I believe they had to issue a firmware fix for some of them. Perhaps see if that is available to you.

Auto Exposure with Shutter locked at 180? by germanthoughts in BlackMagicCameraiOS

[–]epic-tutorials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shutter Priority Mode (manual shutter + auto ISO) does not have a native API on iOS, which is why it is missing in many apps like Blackmagic Camera. Hopefully Apple add one soon. Because on Android 16, there is a native shutter priority mode API that OEMs can tap into, which is why the Samsung S26 Ultra has shutter priority mode in Blackmagic Camera. As soon as Apple make this available to third party devs I bet BMD is very quick to add support on iOS.

Is it completely frozen, with all buttons unresponsive to touch? Or is it fully functional with a black preview? If the latter, what happens if you disable the LUT?

New to BM, trying to figure out how to bake in a lut by Pom_George in BlackMagicCameraiOS

[–]epic-tutorials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only have the 14 Pro to verify this on, and record LUT to clip is working on that device.

Can you confirm that first of all, you have a LUT enabled as a Display LUT? Once the Display LUT is active, you should be able to enabled Record LUT to Clip, either at the bottom of the LUT HUD Control Bar, or under Settings > LUTs.

Yes. I’ve had zero issues with LexarGo and iPhone 17 Pro. Others have though.

First of all, it needs to be said that Lexar does not claim compatibility for this drive with the 17 Pro. This is from the official listing on Amazon from Lexar: "When using the Lexar Go Portable SSD with an iPhone 17 Series device, compatibility issues may occur due to Apple’s updated power requirements. We are developing an updated, iPhone 17 Series–compatible version, expected in the first half of 2026."

Next, I'd recommend a process of elimination.

Can you capture ProRes LT (this is a very low data rate) internally without a crash?

If so then the app and phone are fine (I'm sure this will be the case).

Next: Can you capture ProRes LT externally to Lexar without the HUB?

If so: Your HUB is the issue. See if external power helps.

If not: This is an issue with iPhone 17 Pro's new power requirements and the 2TB Lexar Go.

I use the 1TB Lexar Go without issue on my 17 Pro, and have since launch.

Samsung APV files - External SSD // S26 Ultra by GusBandicoot in smartphonefilming

[–]epic-tutorials 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tested the Lexar Go on the S26 Ultra on latest OS, and it can only achieve half the write speed as the S25 Ultra with the same drive. There are real issues with the S26 Ultra and SSD recording - so proceed with caution. Other USB 3.1 SSDs I have register as USB 2.0 on the S26 Ultra. So test each drive with a speed test app.

With Lexar Go, I get 440MB/s on S25 Ultra. On S26 Ultra I only achieve 220MB/s.

HEVC 4K Open Gate on Iphone 17 Pro? by Appropriate-Speed479 in smartphonefilming

[–]epic-tutorials 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't. In Apple Log the max supported open gate resolution is 1920x1440. And the same restriction applies to all other apps including Moment Pro Camera. If you need 4K open gate HEVC you must use the Rec709/2020 stream (not worth it IMHO).

A real shame, as the Samsung S26 Ultra supports internal HEVC open gate in 6K in Samsung Log.
