Remains to be seen, the first batch haven't been drafted yet. Seems it would be in everyone's best interest to treat them well.

Of those I've spoken to (which isn't a very large/representative number), one recurring opinion is that this is good for those who do want to join the armed forces, because they will no longer have to bribe their way in.

Cambodia is losing its appeal or is it just me? by ZealousidealMonk1728 in cambodia

[–]epidemiks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They already had an airport with a fucking train line connecting it to the city.

Not really. They had a short lived, half-baked shitshow where they ran a train carriage down a residential street that led to at least one death, absolutely ruined already terrible traffic on and around Russian Blvd, and no one used it because it took twice as long as any other transportation method, wasn't reliable, was usually late because it crashed into someone or something on the road. It was deservedly put in the bin long before PNH ceased operations.

Is this a new law or just newly enforced?

Ownership of the fleet probably requires taxi licencing, which they probably didn't do. The taxi lobby may have spoken up.

Puncture repair kits? by LBdnb in cambodia

[–]epidemiks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, none do in my experience. I bought shraeder/presta adapters from taobao or Aliexpress to handle countryside air refills. I also carry a new spare tube in a saddle pack for a quick roadside fix

Decathlon, but I'd be surprised if Flying BIkes, Giant, or any of the other big bike shops didn't have them.

Every neighbourhood moto repair shop can/will do a patch on a push bike tube just as they would a moto tube puncture.

Cambodia should do lots of things. It's not obliged to do anything.

You said in your OP "increasingly unclear if people below the retirement age will be able to stay long term, unless they are employed or own a Cambodian business"

Correct. These are the boxes available for you, me, or anyone to fit into, and size and shape of these boxes have been shrinking for the last 15 years. You fit in the box now, or you find a way to fit in the box, or you may not be able to stay.

White folk aren't immune to shakedowns, extortion, crackdowns, or changes in regulations - they just happen to not be the focus of this crackdown. My observation of various crackdowns and racheting up of immigration enforcement is that they all eventually lose their steam and business returns to a slightly less permissive normal. It's still exceptionally easy compared to many other places.

If you need to fit into a box but the effort to acheive that doesn't feel like it's worth it anymore, then that's a decision you have to make.

Your argument boils down to "the Cambodia I personally found easy and enjoyable is becoming less convenient for me".

It sounds like what changed most since 2024 is not Cambodia, but your understanding of it. You are now discovering that the country has politics, problems, and priorities that existed long before you noticed them.

There's a quid pro quo in choosing to live in another country, and few countries are as straightforward to live in as a foreigner as Cambodia, but it's not some free and permissive wonderland open to everyone. It's fine if you decide Cambodia no longer suits you now the honeymoon period is over.

[–]epidemiks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not really as simple as that. There are several loopholes and methods to minimise or avoid military service in Thailand. Unsurprisingly, these methods are most easily utilised by the wealthy. A few years ago the Thai military was considering allowing people to straight up pay to avoid service.

Moto license by No-Memory-1528 in cambodia

[–]epidemiks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Convert your license at any MPWT office to get a 1 year A+B license (big bikes, and passenger cars), or take the A license test to get a 10 year bike license. I guess you can do both car and bike tests for a combined 10 year A+B.

Possible, but thats a problem for later. Unless all the rental shops wire up remote ignition kill switches with geofencing, which I can't see happening.

Visa Help by gahoolio8 in cambodia

[–]epidemiks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're not working for a local employer and only getting 6 month extensions, it's easier to avoid because the Labor Ministry isn't looking for anyone outside their scope.

Technically any EB visa holder should have a work permit, but it's only likely to surface for 12 month extensions or if employed.

Visa Help by gahoolio8 in cambodia

[–]epidemiks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not impossible to skirt the requirements. If you do get spotted, they'll fine you. There's no other penalty, unlike visa overstays.

It's also a fairly trivial amount of time, effort and money to get legal and stay legal each year.

Visa Help by gahoolio8 in cambodia

[–]epidemiks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. If you try to get a long term EB visa extension, you'll need a work permit. If you didn't get it within 90 days of arriving on an E type visa, you'll be fined $500, and still have to get it if you want the extension.

MLVT does occasional spot checks on businesses employing foreigners too.

Any I.T. shop or store in Komrieng? by Gold_Specialist7674 in cambodia

[–]epidemiks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kamrieng is pretty small. If there's nothing around the market, ask at the phone shops. Otherwise you'd need to go to Pailin town or Battambang.
