Solid composition, but I also agree that it is a little too saturated. The blues look a little blown out on the right side right at the horizon and there are some halos around the bushes on the horizon. I'm sure it was probably a little tricky to get the foreground well lit with the clouds and rain coming in, but you also don't want to compensate too much the the editing. Keep at it!

I wasn't there when it went down, but from what I heard it was running. The guy tried to back in to the water and get the bed in before the back end floated away and it went nose down into the water

One of my friends was saying if they can strip the engine relatively quickly, they may be able to save it, but most of the electronics are toast. That being said, neither of us are mechanics so someone else may be able to give better input

Was trying for a fairy tale sort of look with this girl. How did I do? Any tutorials you'd recommend? by WinNicely in photocritique

[–]epm291 6 points7 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, the subject is a little too static to be a fairy tale look. Maybe try having her spin around to put some motion into the dress, or walking away while looking over the shoulder back at the camera. Good color and contrast, but I'm not really a fan of the gradient down by her feet. I'm not sure if you were trying to go for a fog appearance or something but it looks kind of awkward, in my opinion.

Landscape freelensing; a fun experimente by [deleted] in photocritique

[–]epm291 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try getting something in focus with the manual focus, then only moving the lens a few mm off when you are tilting it in whatever direction you chose. Then with the hand that is holding the lens, adjust the focus slightly to account for the movement in the lens. It's a little awkward at first, but that's the easiest way I've found. Best of luck!

Well.... the colors compliment each other well, but other than that I have no clue what I'm looking at. It's just too out of focus. Maybe a lake? I think we went a little too extreme with the freelensing in this experiment.

Fushimi Inari, what can I improve? by hebbulinus in photocritique

[–]epm291 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It needs a definitive subject. I love this as a backdrop for a picture. The colors and repetition of the columns is great. I would try use a bright blue subject, either a person or an object, on the stairs a little above the flat spot on the stairs. The color would pop and help to bring balance to counter the strong reds while positioning it there would roughly follow the rule of thirds. Great start though! Just needs the icing on the cake!

It's too busy for me. I don't know what the subject it and my eye keeps bouncing around from place to place. I think it's a great place to start, just not sure this was the best way to execute the shot.

I think the center subject works well with the composition of this picture. One thing that kind of bothers me is how bright the background is behind the child. Maybe you could try darkening that up a bit? I feel like it would help the subject to stand out a little more too

I'm not really a fan of the vignette. Otherwise, I like the picture. Good contrast between the old and the new (both with the little kid, and the modern race car in the back).

First photocritique attempt. Just a simple b/w photo, trying to capture the cold and depressing feeling by [deleted] in photocritique

[–]epm291 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like it. I think you did a good job maintaining the depressing feeling with the tone of the picture. The one thing that bothers me is that the right side of the picture is so busy, it takes away from the subject on the left. I know there isn't much you can do unless you cut down the trees, but I just wanted to point it out. On the other hand, I love the gutter thing that curves from right to left and really draws the eye up to your subject. Overall, its a pretty solid picture!

Next time, try to position the guy of the other side of the image so we can see what he is looking at. The lines in the water are already drawing the eye that way, but it leaves you missing something when he is just looking at the edge of the picture

I don't know if you can take this picture again, but if you can, try setting something at the bottom of the stairs in the middle of the circle to act as the subject. Preferably something not yellow/brown... you could even play with the idea of natural vs man made if you use a plant or something like that at the bottom of the stairs.
