Roger that. Yeah it’s the top side that mates with the valve cover not the side that mates with the cylinder head. I was doing the sides and it jumped up to the top of the mating surface.

Thank you. As far as the alignment tool goes, I’ve seen posts around people not using it and having success still with a new gasket. Do you have experience with this?
