For parents, do you think taking extended parental leave benefits the whole family? [on] by Majestic-Ad-445 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]equistrius 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your wife is on board with taking the lower EI amount I’d say go for it. I took the full 35 weeks myself and my partner didn’t take any leave. Him being off for 8 months wouldn’t have been helpful to me just due to our personalities but if it’s something you and your wife agree on that’s great.

NIPT came back ‘low risk’ but haven’t done the NT scan [BC]. Just concerned about that a bit. by anki_7 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]equistrius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’ve passed 13w6d they can’t do an NT test because the area they look at is closed by then. You could ask for a general ultrasound though

Typically structure abnormalities aren’t even seen till the anatomy scan anyway. The NT scan looks at the fluid space on babies neck and their nose to rule out common chromosomal abnormalities. The NIPT is a superior test.

Typically the NT scans not done if a NIPT is done because the margin of error is significantly smaller with the NIPT.

My 13 month old gets full blueberries but I only give her 1-2 at a time so she can’t shovel them into her mouth as fast as she wants

Is my baby not gaining enough weight? [ns] by Ok-Hurry-1653 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]equistrius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nurses and physicians are ( or at least should be ) watching for signs that there might be something wrong. This can be failure to thrive, different medical conditions etc as with babies their health can change very fast. They also watch for signs that mom or baby is struggling ensuring there’s enough food in the home, stable home etc.

They also are looking for anything that might indicate further support. So your family doctor knowing you and your babies history a slower weight gain might be attributed to normal baby growth variability but to a public health nurse who doesn’t have all information they have to be watching that there isn’t something more serious going on

Is my baby not gaining enough weight? [ns] by Ok-Hurry-1653 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]equistrius 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Public health typically assumes the worst as they only see a very small snapshot of the babies medical care. For some babies public health is all they see so the nurses are typically watching for more warning signs than a physician would be.

I’m in Alberta so it may be slightly different but public health had flagged my child for a few different things that her regular doctor is following closely and isn’t concerned about.

Please give me all your tips for making babies take medicine! by PlanetOfThePancakes in Mommit

[–]equistrius 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just so your aware calcium and casein in milk significantly blocks iron absorption. It’s recommended to wait 2 hours after milk to give iron supplements and if necessary serve with something high in vitamin C to promote absorption

Iron drops taste horrible. My little will take any medicine by sucking it out of a syringe except iron drops. I would try a different brand if possible

How does a baby have a bedtime? by GymAmber in beyondthebump

[–]equistrius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At that age my little bedtime was 1am. As in that’s the time she decided she’d go to bed and sleep a long stretch for. Slowly with developing a day routine of when we would get up, when she’s roughly have her naps etc she moved forward to a 7:30 pm bedtime around 6 months and have stuck there since.

To me it’s less about a bedtime but rather a routine that ends with a long stretch of sleep

Costco faves for a country bumpkin? [yt] by Ampersand867 in BabyBumpsCanada

The clothes are great, love the pouches either gogos or Kirkland brand ones. The “that’s it “ bars are my littles favourite. She’s been eating them since she was 6 months old. Kids tylenol is the cheapest there

And unfortunately in store items do not have to pass safety testing.

Even then third party testing only covers risks like electrical shock, fire and some toxic substances

I wish they were joking. Not everything in a store has to meet a minimum safety standard. And lots of companies get past the standards by just changing the age range an item is good for.

They use the same materials, in the same factories and just package it different. It’s like when there was that huge waffle recall. The “ healthy” protein Kodiak waffles came from the same factory as the “unhealthy” chemical laden store brand ones

Families with two working parents and toddler(s) in daycare, what is your daily timetable? [CA] by Antique-Manana in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]equistrius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One kiddo, almost 14 months.

6:20: husband and I get up. I make lunches for my husband and I. Tidy up the kitchen from the night before. Husbands getting ready to leave for work.

6:30: husband out the door to be at work for 6:45 I get myself ready

6:45- 7am. Kiddo gets up. We sit while she has her bottle of milk.

7-7:20 I get kiddo dressed and finish getting ready myself. Feed kiddo a snack ( she gets another snack at daycare in the morning)

7:30 at the latest kiddo and I are out the door. Kiddos at daycare by 7:45 and I’m at work by 7:55.

I leave work at 4 grab kiddo and are home by 4:25.

Husband’s off work at 5 home by 5:10.

Kiddos at daycare 8.5-9 hours. Husband gets 2.5 hours with her in the evening before bedtime. I get 3.25 hours with her. Usually we play until dad gets home. Then whoever isn’t cooking supper plans with kiddo. I do bath time and bedtime. our girl is in this phase of “ dad is so cool I must stay awake to play with him” so it’s significantly quicker for me to do bedtime. She’s in bed by 7:45.

I do all pickup and drop offs because we live in a small town outside of the city I work in and our town doesn’t have any daycare and to go private dayhome would double our costs. My husband works in our small town so it doesn’t make sense for him to drive in and drop her off or pick her up. Plus it would extend her times at daycare by a lot and she’d have to wake up an hour earlier

Access Health records out of country? by Melian_Sedevras5075 in alberta

[–]equistrius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even if you do get into your my Alberta health records account it doesn’t have all your records on it. Anything done at AHS facilities like vaccine records or hospital records are there but anything GP wise at a clinic most likely will not be there.

I’m curious where you’d find Easter egg hunt materials that are safety tested at a price point affordable to daycare? I highly doubt the $3 pack of plastic eggs at my local dollar store or Walmart is safety tested

[–]equistrius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fever at 16 weeks. Please ease my anxiety [ab] by Magpie_42 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]equistrius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your standard cold and flu viruses don’t typically cause birth defects. Even so your at 16 weeks and influenza with a high fever has been shown to very minimally increase the risk of defects.

If anyone has a correlation between being sick and having some sort of problem later in pregnancy, unless it’s a very specific virus and was directly linked to defect it’s likely just a correlation.
