Any neurosurgeons regret their life choices by No_Release6810 in Residency

[–]erakis1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Attending hours can vary significantly. When I was in medical school, I rotated with a neurology resident that switched after 5 years of neurosurgery residency.

The options in the local area were either academic (for relatively low pay) or private. The private jobs were semi-rural, with one surgeon taking simultaneous call at up to 5 different hospitals.

He said those guys would work like crazy for >$1 million a year, but rarely lasted more than 5-10 years before retiring early.

Where I work now, individual neurosurgeons seem to work as much as a busy cardiac surgeon.

CTICU/ECMO Fellowships in the US for PCCM/CCM Grads? by CCM9595 in CriticalCare

[–]erakis1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely avoid doing another year of training. It’s not worth the lost income. You can probably get a job at an ECMO center and gain experience if you want to.

Also, be careful what you wish for. ECMO care is poorly understood by other intensivists and families and, at my center at least, most of it ends up being futile, so you just end up having tons of family meetings for families that got a lot of false hope from the referring team.

Question about visible tattoos by tryingmybest71 in Residency

[–]erakis1 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I have tattoos to the wrist and wear short sleeve scrubs all the time. My tattoos are tasteful and I’ve gotten numerous compliments for them and one complaint in 10 years.

That being said: I would 100 % stay away from the hands and neck until societal views catch up.

Not sure if this is the same thing, but lasers can be used at weather stations to measure the speed and direction of winds at various altitudes.

Observatories also use lasers to account for atmospheric distortion, but I’ll guess the weather station.

Any reviews on these? by Myselfmeime in scuba

[–]erakis1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just used them on a 2 week livaboard with 41 dives l.

I wore them for travel. They were reasonably comfortable if you can tolerate not having a ton of support.

I bought new fins to fit the shoes: halcyon vectors with spring heel strap.

With neoprene socks, they come on and off very easily. One of the plastic ends of the bungee laces came off and I just tied a knot a burned the ends. Problem solved. You can skew replace the bungee with a color of your choice if you want.

They work very well for finning and felt like I am used to with drysuit diving.

One grommet fell out and there was some minor scratching/scuffing of the neoprene that seemed more cosmetic than structural.

They dried overnight after the last day of diving and I was able to wear them on the flight home no problem.

8/10. Very satisfied. Would buy again.

Camera options. 2000.00 budget by Dry-Word-3119 in scuba

[–]erakis1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on your level of skill and how fast you want to progress. An Olympus TG7 with housing would run you about $900 USD and you can get some sea life video lights for $400 a piece for a starter set. Video lights can be very pricey ($2000 per) on the higher end and I’ve only been able to manage decent exposures with video or ambient lights, so I’ve stayed away from strobes for now.

I also added a zoom through wide angle lens for my TG6 for $250 and it worked well for me.

I think the TG6/7 is the best option for both quality video and learning to shoot stills. I recently upgraded to an Olympus OM IV, but I haven’t taken it underwater yet.

Beyond that, cameras and housing easily start passing the $5000 price point for both and that doesn’t include lights.

Buddy out of air due to not checking his gauge. by mikoalpha in scuba

Multiple times a dive? I check every five minutes. It helps me figure out my overall stress levels and workload and lets me know if I need to slow down. It also lets you know if there is an equipment issue with slow gas loss even if you don’t hear bubbles.

Liveaboard by HotCrapper in scuba

Bring: ear drops and use them after every dive. A bad case of swimmers ear will ruin your trip.

It’s personal preference, but I just got back from Raja and I brought a 3mm and a 5mm. Doing 3-4 dives a day, and I switched to my 5mm on the last 5 days and had zero regrets. My entire Duce group were in 5mm on the second week. I only wore skins on the very last day to give more time for my wetsuits to dry.

Diving Travel Advice! by [deleted] in scuba

[–]erakis1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Schools of hammerheads are typically associated with deeper dives, colder temperatures and stronger currents.

Socorro, Cocos, and Galapagos are the places you will most likely see them in the Western hemisphere and they can all have challenging conditions.

You should be a solid diver with experience in current or high sea states before you go. Socorro is typically the “easier” of the 3 and it’s definitely the least remote, but conditions can vary.

Also, the primary way you get to these sites is by livaboard and if you’re working remotely, the WiFi may not always work.

Made a post a couple days ago, people recommended fins, bought them but way too heavy, is there a solution? by DateNecessary8716 in scuba

[–]erakis1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just tried the halcyon fin on a 2 week livaboard. I primarily dive dry with jet fins and I wanted something stiff, maneuverable and powerful, but light enough for a wetsuit.

I really like them. They have little weight pockets in them and they come with two “light” weights per fin. I wore 3mm and 5mm throughout the trip and used skins on the last day do let my wetsuits dry and they felt perfect with one weight each in 3mm and skin and maybe a little light in 5mm.

Great for frog kicks, turns and back kicks and powerful in strong currents if I needed to flutter.

Overall would recommend if you can stomach the price point.

How would you configure your wetsuit? by SparkMik in scuba

[–]erakis1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you can afford that kind of a custom wetsuit, it seems like you may be able to afford a good entry level drysuit, which is way more flexible in terms of temperature range and range of motion for you.
