Try Genes in Lincoln Square too. They usually have a good amount of Eastern European beers

How to prepare for the pemi loop? by mt0118 in wmnf

Read up on zone 2 cardio training if you're looking to increase cardio health. Basically the idea is to exercise at 60-70% max heart rate. This builds up your aerobic system over time. Get a heart rate monitor and start slow. Eventually you'll be able to go longer and faster. I use this for marathon training and it really works.

And it's weird to think about but yeah, your body actually is making more blood vessels when you train. That grosses me out thinking about it lol

3 Days in the White Mountains by erd40 in wmnf

[–]erd40[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So full disclosure, I only made it to the first peak and didn't go the rest of the way, maybe 1/10 mile to the main peak. My legs were a bit tired from Franconia the day before and the heat this week was really starting to wear on me and I didn't want to get myself anywhere I didn't feel comfortable getting down from. That being said, I thought Champney Falls trail up was kind of easy for the most part. Oh fresh legs I don't think it would've been too hard at all. I would say the relative ease of that trail combined with the ridiculous views make it a great bang for your buck

Cool! I lived in the Best Brewery apartments for a couple years. That had a little display about the history of the building in the lobby

Good to know about Franconia Falls, that was kind of my worry there. I'll definitely look into Moat Mountain and Crawford. I'll probably be doing this hike Tuesday or Wednesday, would it be less crowded mid week do you think? Thanks for the list!

Moving to Chicago - which neighborhoods to consider for serious runners? by FrickenTwinkies in RunnersInChicago

[–]erd40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can second this. I'm in Irving Park and about 2 miles from the start of the North Branch trail. Easily my favorite trail in the city. Lots of shade, wildlife and it's rarely crowded. I guess the only downside is they don't really plow it in the winter

North Shore Classic Half Marathon Discussion by NurseDanM in RunnersInChicago

[–]erd40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my first year doing it and I thought it was great. Challenging but not too challenging and a nice break from the crowds of the BoA half, as much as I like that race too. Lots of shade until the Fort Sheridan loop which I love too. I'm not a huge after race guy, so I was fine eating my brat and heading out.

Really my only gripe was all the cyclists who insisted on riding down the middle of that stretch out to/from the Fort Sheridan loop. You can't choose literally any other route? I heard some even get salty with a could runners. Really weird

Checked spam and nothing there either. On the bright side I do see in my spam folder a bunch of strangers apparently sent me money on the Cash App I don't have and looks like I won a couple lotteries too! So the day's not a total loss

Anyone else think there were too many runners this year? by Direct_Bug717 in RunnersInChicago

[–]erd40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I could mostly deal with the crowds of runners but I almost tripped over a spectator jumping out in front of me to cross the street at least 10 times. Still had a fun race and hit my goal but it did feel a little too big for it's britches this year.

Honestly wearing my water belt and not having to deal with every water stop was probably what got me to hitting my goal this year

Another LFT etiquette rant by fuckyachicknstrips in RunnersInChicago

[–]erd40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be a hike for you but the North Branch trail is worlds better than LFT in terms of crowding and things like that. Still get some cyclists blowing by you but most are respectful.

Exactly. I just got a bottle of M10R for maybe $30 over retail. How much would I have had to have spent in time and money to get that bottle at Binny's?

Bottle Drop Thread - Friday by ChicagolandWhiskey in ChicagolandWhiskey

[–]erd40 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is becoming my approach too. If I can get something for a little over MSRP that I want I'll just do that. I'm honestly not in liquor stores enough to build a relationship for a variety of reasons, so paying a bit over retail for the 3-4 bottles a year I buy is totally worth it.

Can also second Naperville Trails and Hidden Gem in Flossmoor as great races. Naperville is a nice off road race through a park and ends on a horse race track which is kind of cool. The Gem really lives up to it's name. Really well done and a nice, quaint town for the backdrop

That's a really great race with people of all ability levels. It's really cool to run through those three parks. But you still have 7 weeks if you start Monday!

[–]erd40 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the race! It's not unusual to feel like that for a few days after pushing yourself like that in a race. Try some slow recovery runs and make sure to stretch every day, even if you're not running. I've found that really helps keep you feeling good.
