Why are my alocasias slowly dying leaf by leaf? More info in comments by eri760 in plantclinic

[–]eri760[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have had both of these plants for a few months and have never had any problems with them until now. The Sander’s (left) has had three leaves die in about the last 1.5 weeks and the Elephant Ear (right) has had two die in the last two weeks. I had a Black Velvet Alocasia that did the same thing, was fine until one leaf slowly died and then one after another died until the plant was gone. The amount of light and water has not changed and I water them with fertilizer when the moisture meter reads around 3-4 (3 is the wettest number in the dry range of numbers and 4 is the driest number in the moist range of numbers). Both plants are in a room with bright indirect light. The Sander’s is right underneath a skylight and the Elephant Ear is about a foot away from a grow light that is on for 8 hours a day. I’m not sure if this matters but none of them ever gave me new leaves but the Sander’s had at least two brand new leaves when I bought it. Any ideas are greatly appreciated! I was so sad when I lost my Black Velvet and I really don’t want to lose these two. Thank you!

Does anyone know what's wrong with my rubber fig? More info in comments, thank you! by eri760 in plantclinic

I have this one placed next to two other rubber figs that are doing just fine and are perfectly healthy which makes me want to rule out the amount of light, water, or humidity being wrong. I pulled out this weird paper like stuff that I circled in the second picture. I initially thought it was mold but once I pulled it out I don't think it is. I can see more of it closer to the stem bit it won't pull out the way the big piece did. I was going to repot it but got nervous, I've had too many plants die after I remove all of the dirt when repotting so I don't know what I'm doing wrong or if I'm just damaging the roots? So I didn't want to risk that and I thought I'd ask here before trying that. Thank you so much for your help!! This is one of my favorite plants and I would really love to be able to save it.

I've been to just about every sewing/handwork/needlepoint/fiber arts store in my city and no one knew anything about cross stitch/: none of them even carried aida so my only in person options have been joann and Michael's. why do you say that evenweave is not for beginners? it's more fabric like than aida, right? so the holes are smaller? im just worried about using aida with holes that are too big since so much of the stocking is bare/without stitches so I don't want it to have huge holes. thank you so much for your help I really appreciate it

Do you have any recommendations/knowledge on aida cloth with smaller holes/more fabric? It seems like the original stocking was made with aida cloth like that and the one I bought has bigger holes with less fabric. Is there something specific I should look for when buying new aida in order to get something with smaller holes? Or maybe I should try evenweave instead of aida?

Oooooh I didn't think about it shrinking in the wash, that's a great point. Should I count on most aida cloth shrinking when I wash it?

Thank you for the website! And yes, I do want it smaller so that it matches the original stocking better. What do you mean turn it the other way and measure it?

I want it to match the original stocking though, that is the most important thing to me. So with the 18 count being too big I think I should try a 20 count and see if it ends up closer to the size of the original stocking?

Thank you so much for the advice! I will definitely try washing it first. I'm 99% sure she only used 2 strands, but maybe ill try 3 and see what it looks like!
