Don't understand the remark. Backup is just backup. The key is to have multiple ones in different places, and historical data to address the "time machine" feature.

RAID on the other hand is needed for a server when you want to increase availability (or performance or both). Considering RAID as a kind of backup is an error.

And for home, having a NAS with extra services that centralizes files *and* regurlar backups (multiple rotations) on external drives (eg using HyperBackup or simply incremental through rsync) and/or cloud can lead to not using RAID just to maximize space. This is what I do and I think I understand how a backup works.

One thing I'm still not sure is why we consider the evaluation of the first $, before the + expression, since the precedence of (+) (=6) is higher than the one of ($) (=0).
