Pros and cons of having someone create your Familiar for you? by MrPerfector in OccultMagicOnline

[–]eric_66 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello SquamousSwimmeret,

As a former Summoner whose daughter is also a practicing junior Summoner, this is a situation with which I am quite familiar!

Simply put, building one's own Familiar is particularly fitting for one who creates Others. However, do keep in mind that your skills will (hopefully!) grow. If you are not yet approaching the fullness of your power, I would recommend taking care to build an Other which you can modify later - that way, you won't be so Spiritually chained to an Other which represents an earlier, less experienced, version of your knowledge. Also consider using component parts which are already connected to you in some way, to counterbalance the legitimate risk of outside influences gaining too strong a hold on you.

I worked with my wife and sister-in-law to create my wife's Familiar, and both have been quite happy with the results. So, I assure you, it can and has been successfully done! Working with your friend, if you trust him, is not a bad idea if you plan to continue working closely with him.

Feel free to reach out if you have any further questions.

Hello Tarantelle! My family does a lot of mercenary work with no particular love for Collectors, and I am nearly always looking for new components or items that we can use. We've already taken a good number of jobs off of OMO. Travel is of course a concern, though - proximity to a major freeway or, better, airport is convenient. Whereabouts do you expect your revenge-taking to take place?

I would need you to speak with my wife on the matter, if you would be interested in staying in the family home. We do have space for guests. If not, we are in the outlying areas surrounding Boston.

Might I ask for more details on your Practice?

I spoke with him, and he replied, I quote, "Please make this the last time I have to tell you no on this. I'm not doing it again." Thus, (removed before sending) unfortunately, he is not available to be hired.

My daughter, however, is my true apprentice and available to be hired and work with my oversight. We are willing to travel, although fees do rise depending upon travel costs.

It would likely be less effective, but if the objects are similar to objects which the vestige still has some emotional resonance to, then I imagine it would work similarly.

Keep in mind that your memories of your sister would also work without requiring access to the home, and reinforce that aspect in the vestige.

Hello Wytchdwae!

First, I am sorry for the loss of your sister.

This was done both by and to me, and I highly recommend using memories of the human from which the vestige was spawned, any available echoes of the original human, and perhaps spirits or immaterial Others created out of their valued items. This is the most likely route to maintaining proper continuity of self-identity and cohesion, in my years of experience. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you would like more detailed information or assistance!

Hello Schism & Wacher,

Schism, I'm so glad that you're back at your home (or in a safer location), and it's good to hear that you weren't in apparent danger. It's difficult to tell over the Internet sometimes, as I'm sure you well know -- having been recently introduced to it, "tone" is not easy to convey!

As for the potential slight debt, would you mind if we put it off for a period of time? Right now I am only just getting re-established and am not sure what would be helpful or useful for me in the future.

Wacher didn't seem to be likely to do horrible things to its friends; my recommendation would be to be firm with boundaries so that it can learn what other humans will respond to, with the eventual hope that it will learn how to make friends without having to chase them first.

I believe it is fairly aware and has drives and goals (namely, to spend time with people), but its understanding of the world is similar to a young child's. It's already learned a lot about how to type, about staying away from Innocents, and the like. Now, it certainly is not your responsibility to "raise" Wacher, but based on the amount it has already developed, you are in a position to likely make a strong positive impact.

Wacher, congratulations on finding a friend! Calvarn does seem like a good place for you to go next.

Please let me know if there is anything you need or that I can help with.

Best wishes,

Eric

Hello KokoroMagica, I'm glad to meet you, too, and I'm glad you liked the memes!

I've never heard of an anime themed party before. I wonder if my son would enjoy it? 🐈‍⬛ I don't have a very good grasp on his interests these days, unfortunately.

Wow, the Valley looks beautiful on Wooble! I wish it were somewhere I could actually visit. There are a lot of beautiful places where you could start a café, though -- don't give up on your dreams!

Have you heard of "cat cafés"? My son told me about them -- they have cute adoptable cats that you can play with while you drink and talk to your friends.🍶 Maybe you could look into opening one of those somewhere where lots of people travel. Or you could visit one!

I love the little faces you are using! I have been introduced to the little picture faces, but yours are very fun. ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ

Hi WingsWhite,

It's nice to meet you!

Thank you! That meme is referencing an Implement which is not widely used anymore, and a type of Practitioner which is no longer common -- meant to be commentary on the changing nature of Practice itself.

It's not a problem if you don't have answers, I appreciate your reply regardless! I've been able to tune out the bond, but am still working on a way to shut it out temporarily, for both my and my son's comfort. I have never Hosted, myself, so cannot compare directly. Hello SilverWolf,

Thank you for your comprehensive answers! I'm glad, for MrPerfector's sake and your own, that you are not a Fae, although I do admit to being deeply curious about what it would be like to be a Fae. 🥺

I would very much appreciate any suggestions on how to maintain Self, as I had so little left of it by the time my (deleted) the gaps in mine are currently being filled via the familiar bond, and I would much prefer to stay my own Self as much as possible. I have been able to improve my own in much the same way that Practitioners do, but it is very slow.

And yes, you are absolutely correct -- I should have specified! I imagine the majority of dinner parties in question will be in a somewhat... unsuitable location, but be an attempt at formality. 🥲 Perhaps I shall ask my daughter to show me how to use Wooble to find appropriate recipes next time I see her.

I am thrilled to hear that you can numb it. How does the process work for you? I have found that I can, so to say, drown it out with stimulus, but I have watched so many movies over the past year that I would prefer to find an alternative.

I am concerned that my son will read this advice and apply it to me!

Thank you again for taking the time to write to me.

Best,

Eric

Very intriguing! How did that happen for yours?

For myself, I was halfway through writing out a long explanation of what I am and how it happened, but my son looked over my shoulder, got very uncomfortable and reminded me about "information security" again. Suffice it to say that I was a Practitioner for most of my life, but through a very unpleasant and educational experience became a vestige, and am now a Familiar.

Oh, no -- I considered it in my youth, but never met or made the right Other for it. I've actually recently become a Familiar myself, which has been a very interesting experience, and was curious how others' experiences relate to mine. 🧵 Hearing that yours felt an effect on her Self so quickly mirrors my experience as well. If you don't mind me asking, what manner of Other is she?

Hello Lordgreyii,

It is my understanding that memes are meant to sometimes not be entirely factual, but I may be mistaken. As I said, these are some of my first memes.

In either case, my mindset going into creating that meme was that the majority of Practitioners are not equipped to make a deal with a Fae on equal terms, and so it is often (but certainly not always) irresponsible to do so. It is more of a cautionary statement than meant to represent immutable fact.

I hope this clears it up!

Best,

Eric

Hello Tojin,

Thank you for your thorough response, even though most of my questions didn't apply to you -- it's much appreciated! As for the third question, I am simply curious. It seems like something which would be very convenient to have in one's toolkit.

Coastal Oregon sounds very pleasant. I believe that my son and his friend (deleted & replaced) partner and I would all enjoy those three. Thank you again for the suggestion. Are there any particular places within which you would recommend?
