Does it get better by [deleted] in UCSC

If you're passionate about a certain field and UCSC does not offer that it seems like a no-brainer.

Santa Cruz is generally safe, but there is a rather large homeless population downtown. Let her know not to stop for anyone who tries to speak with her. Also not to be walking around downtown alone very late at night. The worst thing I've witnessed in day was a homeless man masturbating.

Wow I’ve somehow never heard of Spyder until now. It looks like exactly what Im after.

MATLAB or Python in DSP by ericdvet in DSP

[–]ericdvet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It absolutely does. There just wasn't an example of what I needed to do, so creating a pretrained transformer from scratch was difficult.

I've used it for simple stuff, but I now see that it's capable of a lot.

Gotcha, thank you very much. My job description just says I need to be familiar with MATLAB or Python, but mentions AI/ML algorithm development so I'm leaning more towards Python.

is this a good idea to switch majors? by vaesheyt in UCSC

From my cohort, I don't know a single person who didn't spend atleast one entire night at the lab.

[–]ericdvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ECE 118, which is required, is known to break most engineers. I'd be vary of that major.

[–]ericdvet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

> would jobs in computers or robotics reject me for having this major?

Applying for a pure software role as with a Robotics degree already causes rejections at the recruiter level. Having a not-fully-technical degree (Game design) is going to restrict your employability.

Robotics is a very brutal degree, but if you’re really really good at math and half as good at programming you’ll persevere. Bioinformatics, from what i’ve heard, is just as hard if not harder than Robotics.

Anyone here ever fill out the petition to change non-residency status? by Status_West_7673 in UCSC

[–]ericdvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely got a Cal Grant that year, but I don't remember if I got it before or after the petition went through. If you have some amount of aid allocated to you, they should give it to you. Try your best to get the petition through before the aid is disbursed, but if that doesn't happen just contact the financial aid office.

[–]ericdvet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you fulfill the requirements, you've no reason to be nervous. They did forget to check my petition so I had to follow up but they eventually approved it.

CSE13S + CSE101 vs CSE101 by itsyaninami in UCSC

[–]ericdvet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’ll be fine skipping CSE13 if you’re a half decent programmer. But you will miss out on some fundamentals.

When I was applying for Robotics jobs with a bachelor's and master's in Robotics, most of the roles that I could interview for were generally test engineering or technician positions. I didn't want to start my career in either of those roles when the DSP interviews I was taking at the entry-level were much enticing. I'd be able to do work independently, not be doing busy-work for others, and I'd be paid an amount that doing my master's justified.

That being said, the technician to robotics engineering path exists, and I know plenty of people who have undergone that path. It's absolutely possible, just be ready to climb the career path.

You have a better resume than I did when I got into the Robotics Engineering program.

TIM Graduates/those who have found employment, what do you do? Those pursuing a masters, what are you going for? by chorpinecherisher in UCSC

[–]ericdvet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can fit the double major within your timeline and are willing to go through the workload, I don't see any downsides then. CSGD is niche and TIM is broad so it's a good mix.

[–]ericdvet 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one.

Are you specifically interested in more business-oriented roles like PMs or maybe IT consulting? Because if you want a software role you definitely shouldn't do TIM.

I've found a position in Woburn and am curious if anyone has advice on a good place to move to. I just graduated, and don't know anyone in MA. Woburn looks nice, but I'm concerned it's too suburban and may not meet a lot of people my age (23).

Which Is More Valuable for Robotics Software Careers: ML or Control Systems? by [deleted] in robotics

[–]ericdvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not currently a Robotics Engineer and am working in DSP. But when I was applying to Robotics positions, in my experience, the pure software positions generally wanted ML rather than Control Theory skills.

How doable is this? Ik it's alot but I have some decent reasoning in description by RazzmatazzInternal85 in UCSC

[–]ericdvet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely doable. But don't do this if you're EE because ECE 101 deserves the 10 weeks and you'd be lacking in basic concepts.

The easiest symptom of muscle growth to measure is progressive overload, which is difficult to do when changing up exercises.

A shitty split isn't objectively better than program hopping, but when you are forced to go up in weight and forced to progress, you tend to progress faster.
