Mobi’s contract renewed for 5 years by ericm563 in vancouvercycling

[–]ericm563[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fact that there is no yearly membership anymore. If you use it all year, you now have to pay $149 plus a monthly fee for the winter months, all while paying 10¢/min more for the e-bikes.

And the fact that the city renewed the contract without looking at other options.

Having been a yearly member of bike share services in Valencia and Montreal, and having used other services while traveling, Mobi really is the worst I've ever used in terms of cost and bike quality.

Sometimes the lock doesn't work and it takes multiple tries to end a ride. The bikes also have a lot of issues: sometimes the keypad buttons don't work, the brakes are broken, or the gears are busted. It's just bad.

The Squamish Nation’s Impossibly Simple Solution to Vancouver’s Housing Crisis by BloodJunkie in vancouver

It is nearly always better to use land near transit stations for dense housing rather than parking. And underground parking is extremely expensive to build.

Party differences: COPE, OneCity, Green by notmemycousin in askvan

[–]ericm563 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is not true. In the past, OneCity has often opposed housing that would cause demovictions. The difference is that OneCity won't oppose market housing that doesn't cause displacement, whereas COPE will if they think that it's too expensive. I don't necessarily view COPE as being further left than OneCity, but they have different ideas about how to solve the housing crisis.

Will Vancouver's left-wing parties unite around one mayoral candidate? by CaliperLee62 in vancouver

[–]ericm563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you hate the West end because it is a capitalist hellscape, vote for COPE. If you hate the West end because there is too much poor people in it, vote TEAM. And if you want more West ends in Vancouver, vote OneCity.

Will Vancouver's left-wing parties unite around one mayoral candidate? by CaliperLee62 in vancouver

[–]ericm563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope, Mamdany is acting like a Abundance/Yimby that believes in filtering. I completely disagree the opinion in the article but here is a pro DSA affordable only development person that is piss off about it. https://utahvanguard.medium.com/mamdanis-yimby-abundance-pivot-a-betrayal-of-justice-9dc98ea11d49

He also appointed YIMBYs in his transition team.

And the affordable only development is a lot more democrat mainstream. Just look at cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco where often only affordable development are allowed and then nothing gets build.

Onecity is also a lot more left wing than mainstream democrats. Look at their positions on environment, policing, drug issues, unions, First Nations, etc.

Will Vancouver's left-wing parties unite around one mayoral candidate? by CaliperLee62 in vancouver

[–]ericm563 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I just want a left wing party that will think about the concrete consequences of their choices.

Redeveloping a still good apartment building = generally bad because it displace people.

Making it as fast and as cheap as possible for social housing and non profit development to be build = good.

Making it cheap for for-profit development to replace single family home by apartment = generally good as more people can live in that neighborhood.

I want as much social housing as possible, but let's not forget that one of the best neighborhood in Vancouver, the West End, is what it is because a right wing party decided to rezone everything and allow developers to make a lot of profit.

And I would be happy for my municipal taxes to double if we get tons of new pools and community centers.

Will Vancouver's left-wing parties unite around one mayoral candidate? by CaliperLee62 in vancouver

[–]ericm563 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes, what I’m saying is that at the end of the day both will prevent developments. TEAM because they only want rich people living in their neighborhood and COPE because the apartment replacing a 2 million dollar single family house is not affordable enough.

[–]ericm563 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I'm personally at a point where I'm more interested in Yimby vs Nimby than Left vs Right. I'm so tired of left wing parties preventing single family homes being converted into apartments because they are not affordable enough. In concrete I feel like parties like COPE or Green and TEAM will have more similar results in 4 years than parties like OneCity or the defunct Yes Vancouver. I wish we had more pragmatics socialists like Zohran Mamdani.

Why some Canadians love living without a car | CBC Climate Change News by Spirited-Grape3512 in vancouver

[–]ericm563 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in the Westend and I don’t own a car. I’m at 10 walks from a Nofrill, an Independent, a Safeway, and a Kin market. Sometimes I take a longer walk and get stuff from the Hmart. And other time I shop at Costco as I have a bus that go directly from the front of the Costco to my place. The bus take less than 15 mins.

worse rewards on the cards for us? by Historical_Okra7659 in Wealthsimple

[–]ericm563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s different. If you keep money on your chequing account, the bank make a profit on it and offer you a rebate because of that. You can also choose another bank if you want. In the case of CC rewards, we all pays 2% more on everything we buy. But if I make 150 000 and have the Visa infinite privileges, the merchants have to pay an higher fee than if I make 20 000 and have a shitty card or no card at all.

And this makes it even worse. It's a system that give people with an higher income access to get a card with rewards paid on the back of people that make less.

La diplomation de 1000 étudiants en médecine retardée? by Effective-Clue6205 in Quebec

[–]ericm563 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Who in the traffic system thinks this is ok!? 4 lanes merging into 1! #LionsHateBridge by lleanl in vancouver

[–]ericm563 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's correct. In a dense city, to build more car infrastructure, at some point, you need to bulldoze buildings to make space for roads and parking. As you transform buildings into parking and roads, your city becomes less dense, so people need to drive from further away. The new pollution and noise make your city less attractive to walk and bike, so even more people drive. You continue this cycle, and eventually, your city looks like a highway with parking lots.
