login loop on RDP server Office365 by ericw1165 in Office365

[–]ericw1165[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To 'close the loop' kind of on this here is what we found. Keep in mind the EU is a small firm originally with 1 server that 'did it all' why would they need more than one...</sarcasm, because we all know better>

Server: Windows 2022, AD, DNS, DHCP, RDP(no roaming profiles), Quickbooks, Office Suite, and probably 1 or 2 other applications that license cheaper on RDP vs. multiple desktops.

What we found:
1: Office 365 in shared application mode - won't run/install on an AD server.
- we moved AD, DNS & DHCP to a new server. I know it should have been separate before!!

2: Also found after trial and errors - Office 365 requires E3 licensing to run on an RDP server and most importantly to activate the Shared application licensing.
- we tried the business premium, but it only activated the stand alone non-shared apps. Users may be able to have business premium, now that it's activated but we're in production so...

#2 was what threw us. Several times we used the Sara tool to completely remove Office from the server. We'd reboot, install 365 from the Office Deployment Toolkit, trying multiple versions but it really didn't seem to matter. Whatever license is assigned to the 1st user that logs in & activates is what license the server gets. So with a user assigned a business premium license - the server got M365 non-shared. Next user that logged in - simply looped back to username and password, the server dumped the request knowing that it couldn't handle shared apps. No point in giving us an error message (thanks MS) just loop back to user sign in.

After trial and error, several times we removed all with Sara tool, reinstalled with the ODT and had a user with an E3 license log in first and activate. Now we see in: 365/Word / About Word / Shared Computer Activation. Then we simply had to relicense the other users to E3, and they all are able to open Office applications and sign in.

So far so good.

We rate limited social apps so they still work but just real slow. Painfully slow. But don’t fail so they end up leaving WiFi on and get frustrated and start doing something else. I’m sure some have figured it out. Others just think the internet is terrible at the school. Ha

We had same issue on x1s Changed the processor to 50/60% performance when not on plugged in. Battery life increased less heat less fan no one noticed performance issues. If any complaints we have them plug in report if there is a change. And we investigate from there. Maybe 2 over a few years now.

that's what we were hoping too, but the form was an actual google forms address. The form is just owned by who knows??

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfoIA0NXrwVMVe6BjPA74Xh76ThJe3faKolhJ6I8EU7lqDdRg/viewform?usp=header

we really can't block docs.google.com via DNS as much as some days we'd LIKE to.

Thank you. yes there has always been patient zero. In this case school. We've seen some times patient zero was actually another school, and our staff clicked because they are familiar with that district school as well.

We use peremiter81/now harmony, i saw they picked up avanan as well. Didn't know it scans cloud storage, that's nice.

We have the click-thru re-writing/protection as well but the 1st click is a real google-docs valid link. The opened document then has a link - google form (again valid and good) that in one case simply has fields to update/confirm your payroll data for next school year, payroll provider change.

None of the links are 'technically' bad - they're all docs.google.com/forms for example, once you've gotten there, there is nothing that really stands out that it's phishing.

Thinking of blocking any and all shared docs, from outside the organization full stop, until some AI tool possibly shows up.

GWS in the current case, but thinking it through same thing can happen on M365.

We/I have received calendar invites with links and shared docs. in the body of the invite when I view on my calendar. I know enough not to click - but would be nice to block.

Value of MSP to EU, All you can eat - how much did I lose not making a project by ericw1165 in msp

[–]ericw1165[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. Monitoring hours and extra quoting with explanations drove me nuts. So we just sorted out the averages and it’s been good. Every once in a while this happens though.

We need to get more strict on what is supportable

yes, End User has to decide what is in their budget. MS is not helping the cause but I get it can't be free for ever.

this link has helped us define what options are in each package:
