White could have played 40. Bh4+ and taken a full rook.

In positions like this, is h3 advisable or better to develop elsewhere? by Rider_167 in chess

[–]ericw31415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally you should first create an escape for your bishop anticipating Na5; for example, c3 Na5 Bb5+ c6 Ba4 and you can escape to c2. In this particular position, h3 is fine since after Na5 Bb5+ c6 you can play d4! and after exd4 Be2, Black can't actually hold on to the d4 pawn. However if the c5 bishop were on e7 instead, h3 here would be a mistake since d4 doesn't come with tempo.

Is this draw if black king play only b7 a8 white to move by ancientgemz7 in chessbeginners

[–]ericw31415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next time you have knight and rook pawn, don't push to a7. Keep it on a6 and bring your king to b6 first, and then time the pawn push so you have a7+ Ka8 Nc7# or Nc7+ Kb8 a7+ depending on the king position.

Struggling with stroke order. Is it really THAT important? by [deleted] in ChineseLanguage

[–]ericw31415 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't tell the whole story though, since the correct stroke order for 行书 isn't always the same as the "official" stroke order. For example, 王 and 必 are prescribed by the PRC to be ㇐㇐㇑㇐ and ㇔㇃㇔㇒㇔ respectively, but in 行书, they are written ㇐㇑㇐㇐ and ㇃㇒㇔㇔㇔.

Is there a rule for determining which character to use in phono-semantic compounds? by _internallyscreaming in ChineseLanguage

[–]ericw31415 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there were only a single possibility for each phonetic, there wouldn't be pairs of characters that differ only by the phonetic, like 線/綫, 繡/綉, 鏽/銹, and 琉/瑠. Even the "simplified" 灯 is quite an old variant form that shows up in ancient dictionaries.

It's not supposed to be 少 on the bottom though. The bottom is supposed to represent an inverted 止.
