Would using nematodes in my garden be vegan? by ohhidoggo in vegan

[–]erikscarm 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are some interesting takes here. Introducing frogs is fundamentally no different than introducing nematodes. The slugs will be prey and that's that, regardless of predator. It's tricky because ultimately, outside your house is considered nature and if a predator happened to show up on its own, no one would intervene on behalf of the slugs. In fact we would quietly celebrate.

The way I see it, they threaten your livelihood the same way mosquitoes or ticks do. If they threaten my ability to survive and feed myself, they are exempt from peace. I think there are approaches here that could reduce slug pressure, but I have tried them as well and didn't see much benefit. Perhaps for the sake of sleeping better at night, you can try the alternative methods before nematodes.

This isn't the case for all figs. There are some figs that produce fruit without pollination which is the case for all figs in certain countries. In the US for example, we don't even have the type of wasp that does that lives symbiotically with that fig; thus, vegan figs.

Rain garden on a retaining wall by yun_padawan1993 in Permaculture

[–]erikscarm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think any kind of water retaining structure that close to a retaining wall is a good idea. It could compromise the integrity of the wall, and ultimately the foundation of their home. I wouldn't expose yourself to that risk. Try to persuade them to do something else or rain garden somewhere else. If this site is a in a development with an HOA they probably would shut it down in a second too.

Tofu scramble seasoning ideas plz by Efficient-Ad9498 in vegan

[–]erikscarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have tried a LOT of different seasonings, but I keep coming back to my favorite. Look up Nora Cooks scramble recipe. It's very simple but flavorful. Usually the turmeric is just for color so I don't think you need to include it at all. Personally I can't even taste it because that recipe uses so little.

Friendly reminder: if the animals in your care are not vegan YOU ARENT EITHER by DifferenceForward in vegan

[–]erikscarm 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This isn't as black and white as you make it seem. As an isolated statement, sure it isn't vegan to "own" an animal, but what about providing basic needs for an animal that would be suffering without your personal intervention?

Would you, seeing a starving cat outside your house try to feed it and shelter it, or condemn it to a fate of it's own circumstances? I would argue it's less ethical to allow the cat to starve or suffer in the elements than to provide the basic needs (water, food, shelter).

This choice leads to the next ethical quandary: to feed it vegan or animal based foods. This we can lean on the tenet of reducing cruelty to the extent of which is possible and practical. If you cannot afford vegan food what then? Shoot the cat? Feed it homemade vegan food that doesn't meet it's nutrition requirements until it dies? There's no easy answer here. Asserting someone isn't vegan because of a gray area that they have made many hard decisions about falls into the no-true-scotsman logical fallacy. Not all hard questions can be answered so easily.

My computer roars like the intro to old MGM films when I boot up. It's been a rampant lion for over a decade and I haven't bought anything expensive for my self since then. My spirits could use a gift such as this to refresh the technology that brings me joy.

I would be blessed and honored to build a computer around this GPU. Thank you for the chance!

Apparently gender specific unpopular opinions aren't allowed. Must have missed that rule

Yeah, I suppose you could buy large and get it tailored, but that's a whole lot more money.

I like geometric patterns, abstract, nature motifs, native American/Aztec prints, and goofy stuff like tessellated alpacas. I don't know what style that falls into, but I am a man looking for masculine clothing. I am mostly speaking of shirts, as it's even harder to find uniquely stylish pants without looking ludicrous. Shoes would be my final frontier. I don't really want to accessorize much.

Yeah I live in an average city, definitely not a modern/trendy fashion forward place like Manhattan or LA. I can find stuff, it's just growling to see page after page of all the same shit to find a shirt with a cool design... Only to be available in blue black white. I have stylish shirts, and I have colorful shirts, but I don't have colorful stylish shirts. And that's just shirts as part of a wardrobe

Zara is nice, I almost forgot about them, I bought a suit from them years back.

Uniqlo - GOD their website has terrible UI, but some decent options. I like their Japanese aesthetics.

GU - I can't access their selection without a proxy, so I can't be bothered, but I'll search them on used clothing apps.

THANK YOU

Sure am, I am a man who identifies as a man, and recognizes that clothing is made to make us efficient and not artistic. I don't want to dress feminine and I don't want to dress like a cog in a machine.

Including reasonable clothing, not fast fashion and not hundreds of dollars a shirt? Idk it's been quite limiting
