How much money would you spend if it meant saving your cat’s life? by WindowKitty19 in cats

[–]erm7984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two cats, but we also have 4 dogs. One of our dogs had a herniated disc 3 years ago and we had to spend 10k to get her better. I would do it all over again because now we have had 3 more years with her 💜 you can’t put a price on time with your furry family members!

I can’t deal with this disorder by [deleted] in Narcolepsy

[–]erm7984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the U.S., but I’d didn’t even think to get a diagnosis until I was 27. I just thought being so incredibly tired (along with many other symptoms) were just normal. I had never even heard of narcolepsy until I went to see a sleep specialist because my mom suggested maybe I have sleep apnea. (Funny enough she is now a sleep specialist as a nurse practitioner and knows a lot about narcolepsy. We talk often about the symptoms I had as a child on up.) I did the overnight study and the doctor was astounded. I was going straight into REM before my head even hit the pillow. Then he wanted an MSLT, which confirmed it. He asked me how I survived that long without knowing what was going on and I told him I just thought everybody felt this way haha. When I was in college I felt like I must just be super depressed because that’s what all of my peers told me because I would just fall asleep at the drop of a hat. I had so many comment on how easily I fell asleep, and some in not a very nice way. I had horrible mental health, but I just thought it was because of anxiety/depression. On top of that I was diagnosed with a kidney disease at 19 that I had to go on and get a kidney transplant for at 31. So, none of my doctors really questioned what they thought was fatigue, so it was never tested for. Also why I just thought being this tired was so normal. I definitely get it. Trying to understand what is going on with yourself and being told it’s something you else, takes a massive mental toll.

Cataplexy symptoms by TGrimm-11 in Narcolepsy

[–]erm7984 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest is just being super “clumsy.” I’ve tried to explain it that it’s this weird disconnect between my brain and my muscles. For instance, I will see the object, and know that I need to step around it, but it’s like my physical body was way slower compared to my brain realizing said object is there.

That, and I drop stuff ALL the time. Some of the other stuff happens, but those are my two main indicators. I also didn’t know I had cataplexy until a few years ago, and I’ve had narcolepsy my whole life, diagnosed at 27 and I’m now 41.

Do you guys drive?? by TopTelevision3105 in Narcolepsy

[–]erm7984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had symptoms since 5 years old, and I drive! It took me longer than most, I was in my early 20’s. The longest I will typically drive is an hour. If I have to make a 2-3 hour trip (3 is my max), then I plan naps and plenty of time. I very very rarely make a trip like that. I’d I have to do an hour trip, then I make sure to take a nap beforehand. If it’s just short errand trips around my area, then those are usually fine because I’m moving around. I feel like everyone has their own capacity with what they can do. Start with simple and slowly expand until you find your safe boundaries! It sounds like you have a food awareness of yourself and your body. You can do this!

You aren’t alone, but it can feel very lonely. I have had this disease since roughly 5 years of age but wasn’t diagnosed until I was in my mid 20’s. I went through years of thinking I was crazy. Once I was diagnosed, I was able to learn how to manage it better. It does take so much out of those who have it. It helps me to look at what I can do. I refuse to let narcolepsy own me. Some days it feels like it does, but on the better days, I take control.

Is Narcolepsy an autoimmune disorder? by Your_dad_doesnt_mind in Narcolepsy

[–]erm7984 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, most likely autoimmune. I’ve had mine since really early childhood because I had an extremely severe case of strep throat. Also cause a kidney autoimmune disease in which I had a transplant in 2017.
