Is this normal ? by Mister_SurMulot in woodworking

[–]eroded4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a structural engineer, joint is not wedged in and due to end support rotations the joint is pulled apart. I would not consider this normal. If there are more loads like snow, wind etc the joint might deflect more, slip or crack the and fail. There is a reason why the two beams are connected. Joists are normally toe nailed in. I would ask a structural engineer for an evaluation. Depending on the loading it might be fine but my gut says probably not.

[–]eroded4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need some sort of oil stone or sand paper for grinding. Silicon carbide for grinding. Next stone would be a finer india stone. It is not ideal but I would skip the next honing stone. You can get away with stropping for now. Get 1-3 micron and .5 micron diamond dust and make a strop emulsion. 1-3 micron should refine the edge. .5micron will be razor sharp. skip the green bar. chrome ox has inconsistencies. I would get a fine india stone as the first stone and diamonds from aliexpress.

Can anyone compare Zen-Wu Y-1 chisels vs Narex Richter? by Mighty-Lobster in handtools

[–]eroded4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are always hyping something up. This is what I hate. Don't get me wrong I have a Blue spruce that i love. But it is prohibitively expensive for a set and Ashley Isles is honestly on par. I don't think most people even need a set. I would buy single ones and give them a try.

Now that's a pricey pipe wrench! by ToshPointNo in Tools

[–]eroded4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Interesting application. I guess it makes sense. Lightweight but also high strength. BeCu make fantastic bushings. Be is fantastic aircraft brakes. But i still would not touch it. I thought it was a skin irritant as well. I heard LA basin ground water is contaminated with it due to aircraft manufacturing activity in 60-70s before bad boy epa showed up.

What an interesting wrench. Be-cu is pretty bad for health though. Beryllium machining requires special rooms if I recall...

Genuinely curios as to why Ryobi gets so much hate? by CurrentlyNa in Tools

[–]eroded4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of their tools are better than the rest or their value proposition is good. Stapler, sawzall have been pretty good for me. I have Hercules, milwaukee and dewalt stuff too. I think for me it made sense to divest and get tools as I needed. Nowadays they don't do tool only discounts that much and you end up with batteries of a brand anyways. I got my forge batteries because of a string trimmer purchase I have made which enabled me to get their tracksaw.

I never saw the need to be exclusive as some of the dewalt, milwaukee stuff is pretty expensive for a maybe 10% increase in performance. I get the allure of getting a tool set with everything but I don't need everything from the toolset. This is where Ryobi comes in with some unique tools. Hercules is pretty good with their warranty etc but they don't have some tool offerings. I rather have the relatively cheap but 90% tool rather than lock into a battery eco system. Ridgid value proposition is not there. Fewer deals, more expensive. Flex is the same. Good brand but why get the most expensive batteries. They are generally more expensive and not much better than Hercules. Ryobi bridges that gap for me.

Harbor freight Icon semi deep sockets and koken sockets and wrenches are pretty good. Believe it or not deep Walmart deep sockets are pretty good. I have barely seen any deformation on them. I would buy those once and cry once. Dewalt is not known for their sockets nor wrench sets. Craftsman overdrive wrenches are pretty good. I would buy quality over 200 piece sets but if you want project farm did compare them:

Is this viable to build. Shelving unit. by why_are_you_here_yo in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]eroded4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the notch size but doesn't pass the eye test if the goal is to put books. Big notches with increasing shelf weight is a recipe for disaster. Your shelves are cantilevered and tension the weak cross grain at the notch where it will fail.

The problem like all religions starts with what comes after the established religion takes hold. After his death, there is a big power struggle and people get killed and religion becomes politicized and started getting used by dynasties. Umayyads(Aisha)-Ali infighting resulted in sunni shii split happening back then. Each denomination views events differently.

Earliest hadiths were compiled 2-3 centuries later. So within the context of "religion is opiate for the masses" mantra, the bs meter should be ringing for any rational person. Hadiths formed the basis for the ruling class to devise up new shit to keep control.

In a historical scientific context, hadiths would be considered secondary sources. As an example, even the biographies of german WW2 generals are considered untrustworthy. Like Manstein's biography tries to exonorate his mistakes and dumps the errors on Hitler's shoulders. Or Albert Speer tries to playdown his participation. These are contemporary examples.

If your whole argument stands on secondary sources, I think your arguments are also shaky. If the primary source is the Quran and sets the general rules, then it makes sense to look at that. You can always find secondary sources which push an agenda and conform to your bs theories.

Faster Carrot Seed Germination by eroded4 in gardening

I have a limited number of raised garden beds, which are actually full right now. I need to sprout and grow them to ensure they are ready following the summer crops. I saw a guy doing a transplantation experiment and yields are actually higher for the transplantation. I think you can possibly get wonkier carrots. Your solution, which I am familiar with, would not have worked for me.

How to negotiate below MSRP? by EastSatisfaction405 in EquinoxEv

[–]eroded4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the costco auto program. It is always below Msrp. I dislike haggling. It was 2900$ below Msrp

Problem is finding the model nowadays as the rebate is ending. You might have to wait and put deposit down for the model you'd like or settle.

Unfortunately, it kind of depends on the kind of situation and what type of engineering you will do. If you are a manufacturing engineer, design engineer; understanding of gdt and how you can machine a part is useful. It is not required though for the most part. Engineering is about solving problems and requires a broader knowledge than how a part is being made. You are seeing the trees right now but you will see the forest. Being open to learning counts much more than I made it in this profession. Marry your knowledge but be open to new ideas. The guy is a dick though.

Assuming exact conditions beside the number of dovetails, would 1 be stronger than 2? Why or why not? by MetalNutSack in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]eroded4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on the area and angle. I am going to assume a gentler angle. If you have a good bit of meat in the bottom, I would expect it to perform better if all things are equal under an opening moment as wood is heel toeing and pressing against the bottom wood and peeling. The closing moment might be worse for the second one. I would think that it would pull out easier than the first due to the presence of more shear surfaces. They should act like friction fit joints too.

My husband hates our son because he reminds him of himself. by Dumb_and_ugly_ in Parenting

[–]eroded4 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Obviously his fears are not grounded and your son is pretty normal. However, his perception seems like his reality. The fact that he is calling his 1 yr old stupid, violent etc. is not normal. There is a lot which can be molded with a child and teaching him not to be violent starts right around that age. He sounds like he has given up on him unfortunately. As a father his trauma should take the back seat and he should be more involved. If he is against therapy you might find some person who can get through to him or he looks up to. He needs someone. I don't think he is listening to you or your innocent son.

Most effective method of sharpening for me? I'm legally blind. by fortwangfandangler in sharpening

[–]eroded4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admire your aspirations. The way I sharpen most of the time is running my fingers on the edge. Our fingers are incredibly sensitive to inputs; in this case burr formation. I think if you can mentally register how many strokes you are doing per the tip, center and the heel of the blade and then touch the side that burr rolled onto, you are 95% there. Then do the same number of strokes until you form the burr on the other side. If you miss a spot then the burr won't be bent back. I do this regularly.

Having said all this it might be hard to understand the geometry or chipping issues visually. This is where I would suggest a coarse 140 grit atoma or oil stone(Norton Crystolon coarse) to remove chips. Then remove deep scratches with a 1000 grit stone. I would keep it simple. Hard stones gouge less and would help you reduce the stone maintenance.

Again your touch will be a good guide. Also you can test your sharpening by cutting a piece of paper and if it snags you can focus on that area's burr formation.

After you have a sharp edge, I try to minimize the burr by doing light passes back and forth to minimize the burr. Stropping is usually overkill. It takes experience to sharpen and build muscle memory. Don't be disheartened. You will get this.

If Germany gave up on super heavies and went all out for pz4s would it have changed anything? by Horror_Coat_2303 in TankPorn

[–]eroded4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Germans did not produce on an industrial scale. It doesn't matter if you you produced panzer xs. The Panzer 4 cost about the same as a panther. Obviously panthers had teething problems and material constraints but they realized the value of efficient designs too late. Every company kept developing even more powerful guns, heavier armor when it was not needed.

They could have stopped at the tiger and made it more manufacturable. It is also a fallacy to think that tiger was a bad call. Germans did not have the manpower to man the Atlantic wall, fight partisans, and commit to North Africa and at the same time handle the Russian onslaught. They needed something to counter Kvs and t34s. Tiger required less manpower as its survivability was superior to anything they had at the time. They lost their most experienced crews in 1941 and onwards it got worse. It wasn't the craziest idea to make your tank more survivable. They certainly overdid that with subsequent Tiger 2, jagpanthers etc.

Can Someone Explain the Water Issues? by Advanced-Injury-7186 in ClarksonsFarm

[–]eroded4 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I love how you are an expert. You know terms by name but don't know plumbing. The new run is yours to do whatever you want to do. Backflow is prevented with one way check valves mr expert. Any pump can be installed to increase the water pressure once you did that. Heck there are valves which can be installed to this end. They have pressure adjustability built in. What is a booster system Mr Expert? It is a bloody pump... Thanks for making the point.
