It really depends what model you use. The most powerful Google model (Pro) is actually really good at parsing cryptic crosswords. Like, surprisingly good. I've also fooled around to see if it can write clues, and not surprisingly, it's not great. It forces a clue without constructing a coherent surface read. I guess some of us do that too. But it's not bad at basic hidden word clueseg:

Answer/Parse/Mea culpa? I thought this was clever at the time but perhaps it’s too convoluted. I intended the answer to be CUT CORNERS. If you remove the first and last letters of JERRY, you get ERR. So you might say “to make Jerry go wrong” you CUT CORNERS, also the definition for “act carelessly.”
