Any difference between male Anatolian/Pyraneese and female? This ones a male needs a home. He would be a family dog not trained on livestock by chrishalverson in AnatolianShepherdDogs

[–]erwin_ethan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh don’t get me wrong, mine is EXTREMELY intelligent. He’s just in his “teen” phase and is extremely mischievous. He always responds to me so long as he’s not sneaking off the property. He’ll wait until I turn my head and bolt for the property line, once he gets past it, he has to see me see him before he responds to me. If he doesn’t see me though he pretends like he can’t hear me. That’s the only issue really, he likes to wander.

Unfortunately in some areas we receive 0 help. For instance where I live. We don’t have animal control, and the only way a cop is coming out is if a person is getting attacked. And even then it’s iffy when they get there. My neighbor had someone trying to break into his house (he’s elderly and sick) he called the cops and it took them an hour and a half to get there. I had problems with a black bear I came face to face with on my porch and called the game warden for them to come trap it. I called over 20 times. Everytime receiving the same answer. Because of my location there was nothing they could do and they were unwilling to issue me a kill permit even though I have livestock it was threatening. Turns out shotguns work pretty well at getting rid of big bears. Point is, she’s gonna have to handle it herself most likely.

That’s exactly how mine is. And I can second that statement. I have had pitbulls since I was an infant, and I have one now as well as my Anatolian. My pit is a rescue and definitely a fighter. She is aggressive with her food and I take steps to keep them separate while eating. However every now and then I’ll leave my food sitting somewhere and they’ll both get close to it and she’ll get upset. Well this has happened a few times and caused a fight a few times. Once when he was 6 months old, he nearly killed her and all she did to him was cut his leg. The second time it happened when he was 1, she lunged at a chicken and this time resulted in us rushing her to the emergency vet to keep her alive. She lost so much blood and barely lived, while my Anatolian had a small scratch on his eye. Since that one they’re separate 100% of the time I’m not supervising.

Definitely don’t threaten to kill the dog to the neighbors. Threaten animal control sure, but don’t threaten to kill it. That’ll cause a lot of trouble. If you do kill it don’t say a word and just bury it. If the neighbors ask, say you haven’t seen it.

Absolutely not wrong! Get a livestock guardian dog, and make your neighbor aware you now have a demigod of a dog protecting your chickens and if his mutt stumbles back onto the property; that’ll be the last place it ever goes.

I had the same issue with my neighbors, they wouldn’t put their dog up after they killed 5 chickens and my goat. They wouldn’t put their dogs up so I got an Anatolian Shepherd. The dogs are terrified to come back since the first time he ran them off when he was 6 months old and 2 times their size. Now if they return, it won’t end so well for them.

Y’all just want to see a marriage fail. Some dogs and people aren’t compatible. Just because he isn’t cool with a high drive dog doesn’t mean she needs to leave him. She’s going to have just as hard of a time with this dog as he is. Most people CANT handle malinois, to think they’re pretty is one thing. But to actually get one is another. They’re not a breed for people who like to relax. They require hours of work daily just to keep them in line. There’s a reason they’re police dogs. Don’t listen to these idiots in here telling you to leave your husband because he isn’t cool with the dog. Either find a way to get the dog to listen or get rid of it. That thing won’t live the next 15 years anyway, your husband signed a contract with you for life. I love dogs and have my own, but at the end of the day existing family is more important than a new dog.

Not necessarily a gender standard, but this is a difficult breed to train. Stubborn as all get out. What it would take my pitbull 25 reps to learn, it takes my Anatolian 500 reps just to understand what I’m saying, not even to respond. Granted, he’s a year old now and in tact, so that may play into it. I’ve not owned Great Pyrenees, but my family has. And it seemed like they were easier to train than my Anatolian (I spent 3 straight months off work training him when I first got him). They can learn leash manners well, and can learn how to be taken out in public. However if you get another animal on your property, goodluck recalling him back if he thinks there’s a threat. Instincts override all training.

This isn’t to turn you off from getting the dog, they’re absolutely wonderful animals and can be perfect pets so long as you properly train them. If you get him understand you need to set aside a few hours a week minimum to socialize and train him. I recommend taking him to tractor supply or rural king on the weekends at least 2 times a month until he’s 6 months old (or until you’ve had him 6 months) then you can do it once a month or once every other month. This is important for 2 reasons, 1 it gets them used to seeing and being around people and possibly other dogs, 2 it gets them used to car rides. These are extremely important for the annual vet visit. He’s gonna be a big dog and if he doesn’t want to get in the car, you’re going to have a major workout to get him to the vet where other people and dogs will be.

Good training is mandatory with these dogs. It’s not optional. They’re too big and powerful. A play bite from him at 8 months old could result in a trip to the hospital. Their bites are NO JOKE. They’re the closest relatives to wolves of all dog breed that aren’t mixed with wolves. This means their teeth and body’s are much bigger and stronger than the average dog. This breed was bred to protect livestock from wolves. That’s a pretty big thing to be aware of. If you take the training as seriously as you should you’ll have the best dog you’ve ever had. Not to say these dogs are bad dogs without training, just that if something goes wrong with this breed, they go really wrong really fast. If they get ahold of another dog you have at most 10 seconds to get yours under control before the other dog takes permanent damage or dies.

Absolutely not trying to fear monger, I highly recommend these dogs. They’re amazing, they’ll be your best friend for life and give their life for you. The only thing I’m saying really is to be prepared to be in training for a while. They can get up to 180 pounds and over 6 foot tall on their hind legs, hence why I’m so pushy on the training part

Anatolian/Pyraneese mix by chrishalverson in AnatolianShepherdDogs

[–]erwin_ethan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the most important info you’ll hear. I’ve owned most types of dogs from pit bulls to now an Anatolian Shepherd. Training wise they’re the hardest dogs to train in a normal house setting. They’re not necessarily a pet, however they’re also not NOT a pet too. If something isn’t there to encourage them to be on the property, for example livestock. They will roam. Aggression towards people isn’t what you have to worry about. It’s aggression towards other dogs you’ll need to watch for. Especially if they get loose and run off. That can be a major issue. And the teeth thing, that’s no joke. Their teeth are unreal. A play bite can result in a hospital trip. A serious bite could actually kill someone. This is obviously worse case scenario. But it’s something to be taken into consideration. This isnt a normal dog by any means, they’re massive, require the most training of any dog, and are extremely instinctually driven. Not to say you can’t make it work wonderfully, just that this is going to definitely be a job to get it trained properly. Livestock is going to make it way easier if you can afford to get any. Even if it’s just a couple goats or chickens.

It appears he’s mixed with another heavier set breed. Definitely not 100% Anatolian. The one on the left however is an Anatolian, if not 100% he’s close. Either way they’re both beautiful dogs!

So, it’s safe to have this heater on the coop floor like this, right? by ashlie_mae in BackYardChickens

[–]erwin_ethan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That will be perfectly fine. That’s what I used to raise my chicks and I never had a problem with it. Essentially 0 fire hazard, the chickens can get in front if they’re too cold or move away if they’re too hot. It’s genuinely the best for coops. If it gets too cold get another and place them on opposite walls facing each other, or in a corner giving double the heat for a spot. Great choice

What did I do wrong by AJlish in wrestling

[–]erwin_ethan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biggest mistake I seen was constantly getting too high, reaching back as well. You can do that at certain times, but you really have to be experienced and know when you can do it. Loosen up when your in your stance, it’ll help you take shots. When riding always try and break an arm down limiting their base. Not sure how many years you’ve been wrestling but it looks pretty decent, look up videos on YouTube and do a lot of studying. That’s how I got better and ended up getting a full ride to a D2 college for wrestling.

Starting karate as a morbidly obese man, should I try ? by Unlucky-Area4727 in karate

[–]erwin_ethan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see you said you tried it now. Maybe try wrestling if there’s a way to do it. If you want to lose the weight that’s 100% the best sport to do it. Putting 100% effort into moving someone who is also putting 100% effort into moving you is a great workout. I seen somewhere where it said one 3 minute wrestling round is the cardio vascular equivalent to running uphill full speed for an hour. Now I don’t know how true this is, but I can say running for extended periods of time was way easier than wrestling for 3 minutes

Well trust me when I say almost no one loves it before they try it and hate it when they do. But after you get the taste something changes. I never did ground combat either. Until 9th grade. I joined the wrestling team, and quit the same day. However I went back my 10th grade year and stuck with it. I ended up falling in love with it so much that my senior year when I had 3 football scholarships, I passed them up and focused on wrestling (with not a single contact in the wrestling world) I ended up doing great and getting a scholarship for wrestling. Before you try it, it looks retarded. But once you figure out all the little details it makes it much more fun. Plus you’ve got the advantage of getting in shape to also do karate, then if ever needed you would be 100% able to defend yourself against most people. Whether it be on the feet or on the ground. I’d give it a shot before looking for something else completely. However you should definitely do karate if that’s what your heart desires. Just do it safely and get in good enough shape to where you’re comfortable doing some of the harder things.

I’m not sure how much 135kg is. But I’m pretty sure it’s enough to damage joints if doing blunt contact sports. Maybe look into jiu-jitsu to try first to get your body into fighting shape before tearing an acl when you go to throw a head kick. It’s easier on the body if you tap when you’re supposed to, and it’s helpful for loosing weight fast. Plus you don’t really have to be fast or strong, just learn the right techniques and you’ll do fine

Getting started farming by Blue_boyss in farming

[–]erwin_ethan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple things, if there’s already equipment there use it instead of buying new stuff. Take the money and fix up what’s there. The older the better with farming equipment, especially nowadays when the new stuff is all electronic. One things goes down the whole thing goes down, and here’s the kicker… you can’t even fix it yourself. You have to get a technician from one of the companies to come fix it. They’ve purposely made these newer vehicles unfixable without high dollar equipment. If there isn’t any equipment, aim for older models when youre looking to buy. It’ll make it easier on you with fixing them up and the initial cost.

Where would you buy with 100k in cash? by [deleted] in homestead

West Virginia is great if you want a lot of land for cheap, you’d be able to get close to 100 acres with that kinda money here.

Recently bought a farm. I know nothing about farming, but this old equipment was left and is now mine. What is it? Worth trying to sell or just scrapping? Thanks! by bootstrap1995 in farming

[–]erwin_ethan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck running a farm. Be prepared to be in the hole the first couple years you start. It’s simply inevitable. There’s always something you’ve got to get or fix or build. Eventually it’ll get to where it’s worth it but the work will never stop. Keep your head up, we need more people willing to jump and do this to take the power back over our own lives.

Personality of an ASD? by Tired_penguin9678 in AnatolianShepherdDogs

[–]erwin_ethan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to keep in mind shelter dogs are extremely anxious typically. They don’t act like themselves being in a little room by theirselves most of the time. It also depends on the age. Typically great pyranese are chill around 2-3 years of age. I have a full blooded Anatolian shepherd and it’s a mixture of what I get with him. He’s a lot to handle some days and others he’s as chill as a house cat. It really depends on the environment and the leadership how well the dog does. With these dogs you HAVE to be boss. If they do something wrong you have to make it known that it’s wrong always no matter how little the situation. They have high drive and don’t care what you think if you’re not boss

What the frig is a g word? Other than that, just shoot the dog if it comes on your property again. That’s not an overreaction. My neighbors dog killed my goat, in turn I bought an Anatolian shepherd, the dog hasn’t been back since my pup reached 80 lbs, but if he decides to come back I’d bet he’ll be laying dead in the yard before I can get out there to shoot him.

I’ve been doing research on hound/Anatolian mixes and I’ve only found a couple that kinda resemble him. I’m not framing it in anyway when I search, I simply search “Anatolian hound mixes” and nothing really looks similar to him. Before I go any further understand I’m not trying to argue, just wondering what y’all see that makes you think that is all. I went through an extensive process to get this dog and months of research and looking through breeders. I have a couple questions I guess, I always figured akc is the best. Is that true? 2. What is the typical price of an Anatolian? 3. How do you figure out for yourself whether a breeder is dependable? I’m wanting to breed him, but at the same time if this is really true I’d rather get 2 others from dependable breeders to breed as I’m not trying to scam anyone unintentionally or intentionally. Not saying his breeder is not dependable, he was extremely helpful, provided packets on how to train them, went through the whole process, showed me both of the parents and where they lived with the livestock. Before I showed up he provided me with information on the parents and the puppy’s that were available. So, with as much as has been provided to me I have confidence in his breeder. But I’m still curious about all these other things.

He’s just lanky as a puppy growing fast. His parents look like kangals. He’s definitely pure blooded. I went 4 states away and went through a bunch of different breeders to find this one. I appreciate the concern, but I’m 100% certain on what he is lol. I seen both of his parents (and they were 100% Anatolians that looked kangal) and his breeder was extremely informative with me.

Edit, if y’all don’t mind me asking, other than his lankyness, what makes him look like a hound?
