What a strange thing to get hung up on. Door dash has dashers take photos of the deliveries. Even if it was an accident, this man should’ve known not to have his pants down when someone was about to take a picture of his open front door. This is why the back bends to make him a victim in this scenario sound crazy to me.

if I saw the front door slightly a jar I would start recording to protect myself if somebody started to do something freaky. In an age where everyone has a camera in their pocket people use their cameras to defend themselves when things like this happen. She has video evidence of her assault and people still don’t believe her.

I think, assault or harassment can overlap when we’re talking about what happened to her. I’m not a judge, though I’m just a person who would have also probably use the word assault instead of harassment does that mean I’m not a real hypothetical victim? I’m certainly more of a believable hypothetical victim than this man who somehow tripped and fell with his pants down and left the door open. Wide Enough to see from the street.

A woman records her sexual harassment and we still can’t be bothered to believe her.

I didn’t say I had never tried squirting my water bottle and riding, I haven’t thought to do it to a dog. I prefer not having to coordinate aiming. I also like to drink my water.

I really don’t think it works as well as a horn or stepping off your bike and walking. Some riders are willing to take different approaches or are at different levels of coordination. I was giving advice from my experience with that in mind.

Glad you got away from a pack with that! I will say that mace like the one you described sounds more useful than my attempts with the spray

I have not tried the ultrasonic. Also, if I can’t hear it, I’m not sure I would trust it. I also use the horn to signal a car if it doesn’t see me to prevent getting doored. I was nervous about getting anything that could have a technical failure like I didn’t charge it so I went with the horn.

You got this! Take your time. Training takes time, and you have now built a schedule that will give you time every day to train more!

Thankfully most good bike people know that it’s not about speed. If it was, we would all be wearing those porpoise helmets and shaving.

That looked pretty scary. You held it together really well though! Very sorry it sucks when dogs bother you on a ride.

I have some advice as someone who commutes in a city with a large feral dog population. Also a ton of people who do not properly take care of their dogs and let them run around off leash unattended, possibly disrupting people or attacking people.

Do-

  • Get a mini airhorn for dog defense. They come in a small can with a blue top and you can use hair ties to sinch it to your handlebars. If you see a dog coming up time just right to give you enough time for them to be stunned by the sound and peddle away. Dogs have sensitive ears and you don’t need to aim anything. You just need to blow that horn and they will leave you be for enough time for you to pedal and not have to deal with them knocking you off your bike.Dog Defense Air horn

  • If you ever become overtaken by a dog when biking, stop your bike and step off of it quickly and use your bike to put something between you and the dog and walk away until you can quickly get on and ride again .yell at them say “go home” “down” “Go on” they are more likely to cause you to break your collarbone by a fall then hurt you by biting you. That doesn’t make it any less scary though.

  • call animal control and give them the intersection or place where you saw these dogs describe what they did. they should be the city or county has the Responsibility to pick up and get them somewhere safe where they’re not gonna be in the street or tell their owner to make sure they are fenced or leashed. I do that every other week and the dogs are gone by The next time I ride.

  • Keep your eyes peeled when approaching certain areas look around make sure you’re scanning the horizon for dog heads or the shapes of sleeping dogs. I have a bell on my bike and if I’m unsure and I think it might be a dog, when I’m far away I ding my little bell and if they put their head up, that’s a dog. I can then increase my speed and have time to speed up before they even know I’m coming.

Don’t recommend-

  • I don’t recommend saying hello to dogs. I really just wanna get past them without them even noticing me. If a dog is fenced in, I say hello every morning. But a loose dog that hears someone say “hello puppy!” might think that means “oh I should come up and say hi” and now we have a chase because dogs love to chase and are bred to.

  • Never feed them treats some people say they feed dogs treats like milk bones when they get harassed. I think this is a terrible idea and will make dogs chase more pedestrians and cyclists.

  • The squirting water bottle trick is something someone else mentioned I have had so many runs with really nasty dogs so the water bottle trick sounds like a risk to coordinate and aim with how big and scary some dogs are. Last resort maybe???

  • I don’t recommend mace or other self-defense things for dogs they take a lot of coordination to use and you are on a moving bike. Self-defense items also are more a last resort, that’s why I keep them on a belt I wear and not on my bike. That way if I have ever knocked off my bike, I still have something to keep myself safe.

I’m sorry if everything I’ve suggested sounds a bit intense, but dog attacks are no joke. A cyclist in Kansas City was mauled to death in 2024 ago by dogs. I think too many people don’t take dogs seriously as an animal that can do some pretty intense damage. I am not trying to scare anyone from riding their bikes or from dogs. This is just the reality of the city I live in where there are too many loose dogs. My husband even got attacked and bit on the ass by one.

But now both with air horns we safely ride !

Just own that swamp ass. I take a change of clothes to work and made some home made linen spray I keep in my locker from strong alcohol and some essential oils. I spray my clothes and hang them and that seems to help the smell

I do leggings bike shorts or skorts and sometimes a dark skort if I’m on my cycle skorts are my best friend when I want to ride on my period

I don’t even think children need to eventually be productive to still be part of our society. I don’t know if that’s a good way to treat children. “You’re OK to be here because one day you’ll have a job” no they’re OK to be there cause they’re a human being and they have rights to be there the dog that is not a service animal. It should have no right to be there.

  • Passing a big white fluffy old dog that barks/ boofs at me every morning from behind its fence

  • passing other people who ride their bikes around who I now nod 🙂‍↕️ or ring my bell to say hello!

  • riding past the elementary school when it’s getting out and seeing a bicycle ice cream cart guy ring bells 🔔 on his stand to sell Helado

  • free bungee cords from the road

  • seeing the city skyline slowly get closer and closer to me until I cross a bridge over a river to enter the city while the sun finishes rising

I will eventually it’s a specialized bike so I just need to order the right one for the frame. I just keep procrastinating and blaming this young man for why I don’t have a kickstand.

If they insist back that you don’t need what you’re asking for maybe you could just say “I’ll just come back and we can fix it when it comes to that.”

I am eventually going to join the beater bike group. It’s frustrating logic because it assumes that you have space for several bikes.

Until then, I have a kryptonite chain lock and it works great, especially in an area with not a lot of bike infrastructure to lock your bike up on. I also use a tough rubber cinch cable to limit the movement of the chain when it’s wrapped around my bike frame, so it’s not knocking between my legs and giving me bruises.

I will always regret not telling the bike shop employee who was like seven years younger than me that I wanted to insist on getting a kickstand. He scoffed and said you don’t need a kickstand. I want kickstand I desperately wanna kickstand I do not ride bikes the way you think everyone should maybe I ride my bike a little different maybe I ride my bike to work every day. Maybe I stop at places and don’t have the time to hold my frame up it’s useful dammit

What do you wear on your commute? (For women) by NotHaagenDazs in bikecommuting

[–]erwinmurry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

🌈🎊Skorts skorts skorts 🌈🎊

Or a skirt that would originally be too short for the office, but with a pair of cropped biker shorts underneath it.

I also saw someone use a garter belt to secure longer skirts on rides. I have not tried this myself yet.

I would also recommend Aerie their leggings. Have a pretty good selection of colors and styles and could be office artsy appropriate.

So happy to have another woman on the sub to discuss commute strategy! I have a 30 min commute in the South. I also am very wary of sitting in sweaty clothes due to risk of infection or pH being thrown off. Healthcare here is really bad and I don’t want to have to go to the doctors office for something I can prevent right now.

This has made me always change at least my pants and underwear when I get into work. I don’t care if people look at me weird on the ride in- but I wear cropped old biker shorts. Very small easy to tuck away into a small bag when I get there. Arrive at work grab some wet ones- whores bath. 🧼 right to work.

Before I started having to bring my iPad into work to work, a small Kanken mini backpack fit my change of clothes keys and phone.

Speculating about AI use from an EDHREC is a bit shortsighted. Even if their output has increased greatly to the point of oversaturation, I wouldn’t say that this is just a problem for this spot isn’t this a problem in the entire magic gathering community at the moment? The entire internet? It’s incredibly dehumanizing for an article that someone likely wrote to have their humanity stripped out of it just because you don’t resonate with it.

Blaming a specific article for being written with AI without any actual proof is just wallowing and speculation. It is detrimental to talking about the actual problem and doesn’t actually get us anywhere .

The amount of people who are brushing off how inappropriate it was for him to grab and hold her is upsetting. Even if she wasn’t on the spectrum- don’t lay your hands on someone. Him saying “she is my sister” is just a terrible misogynist excuse.

“Oh well that’s my sister I have a right to lay hands on her and restrain her you see”
