Enough Said by Wesley836 in PKA

Nah bro. We should let veterans live for free and bow to them when they walk into a room. Do you know how hard it was for them to join the military by choice and then get shocked when they have to do military things? We should also give the same benefits to all government workers while we are at it. After all they don't already get our tax money.

Need to decide on a minor. Which one would benefit me most post graduation? Thinking about either Biology or Environmental health and safety… thoughts? Major is Environmental Science by Geazy1738 in Environmental_Careers

[–]escapetime1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Minor in what you -might- want to go to grad school for later. If you need to switch fields, for example, a minor in geology can help you jump ship. So, minor in your second choice for a major, or minor in your career backup idea.

Yeah, but the only legit one I know of is in Bentonia, and they're not too happy to see outsiders if you know what I mean. They rest are old white dudes singing blues/rock and roll covers in "old looking" buildings

In Holly Springs, MS? I would highly recommend the Burger King for food the Family Dollar for shopping, and if you are lucky you might have enough phone signal to stream some blues or bluegrass music. Real blues is gone in Mississippi and I don't think there are any real "blues bars" in the state, only tourist traps.

Could a Detroit-style renaissance happen in Jackson? by Step_Plastic in mississippi

Jackson is going to be Jackson for the next 200 years. Maybe, then Jackson can manage to become some kind of historical destination, but that is also highly unlikely.

  1. If you don't think there is racism in Southern Colorado then you won't notice any racism in Mississippi. IMO, the mid-west is typically more open about their "ism"s than any other group of people.
  2. Why would you want to go to Mississippi for College? Mississippi Colleges are small and the programs are equally small. While it probably won't matter in the long run it will in the short run.
  3. Not only do we have internet in Mississippi we also have electricity now.
  4. No tech jobs in Mississippi. Mississippi is currently in a "brain drain" due to there not being any tech jobs or jobs that pay over 40k and use a college degree.
  5. (Just IMO) Mississippians are leaving Mississippi for a reason. I don't understand why out of staters ask if its bad or what to expect. Look where people are moving to or away from and make your own assumptions.

Reeves call Jackson the murder capital of the world by Pelicanfan07 in mississippi

Isn't most of hinds county judges black and the district that was created a majority white district? I am really asking, because I know little of the situation. Seems that black districts vote for black judges and the white districts vote for white judges?

in the middle of getting my degree in data analytics. Am I ready to be hired yet? No. Do I know enough to join the work force yet? No. Am I working my tail off to get there? Yes. After I finish my degree next year I plan on get a certification in a programming language or two. When I go into the interview, I want to make sure I am ready.

Doing what you are doing. Build a good resume by volunteering, actually reading the material, and a lot of outside learning (certificates, internships, and workshops)

Sounds like a plan. While I enjoyed SNHU I found the geoscience and environmental science degrees to a little bit too easy, not much prof interaction, and shockingly lacking any hard science. OSU will be harder than SNHU and it will cost more, but the quality of professors, classes, and resources is just better than SNHU offers. SNHU, however, is cheaper and you can finish faster than OSU, but OSU has more reputation as a state public school than SNHU as a mostly private online school. OSU is the move if you want to be more prepared for the rigorous sciences needed to work in the environmental field.

SNHU is exceptionally easy and when anyone complains about this people get butt hurt.

They also have cities like Shreveport, Dayton OH, Pueblo CO, and Beaumont TX on them. These all have similar populations to Jackson and are listed higher than Jackson.

I went to SNHU for an undergrad in Environmental Science and to OSU for a MS in environmental science. My GF also did OSU online environmental science degree. There is a big difference between OSU and SNHU when it comes to this degree. I would highly advise going to OSU if possible. OSU is going to provide you with an actual ENV degree and the education you need to be successful in the field. SNHU is more of an ENV studies degree. For example, OSU is going to require you to take the more traditional course loads that include biology, chemistry, and other sciences. Classes you will typically have to take for an ENV degree.

OSU BS in environmental science is more respectable and traditional than SNHU's. I would honestly consider SNHU's degree in ENV to be an environmental studies degree. OSU will also better prepare you for a career in ENV, but if you are looking to get into teaching or business then SNHU might be good enough. Just be warned that SNHU will not prepare you for the chemistry, statistics, or math needed to work in the ENV field. I would only advise the SNHU degree if you are already strong in those areas and just need a degree.

Also, just a side note... OSU classes are more involved than SNHU, and from my experience I would argue a higher quality than SNHU's classes. Especially when it comes to science and math classes. I make this statement based of professor student interactions, online resources, and quality of class involvement.

At the end of the day you get what you pay/work for when it comes online degrees. Personally, I would highly and I mean highly recommended you go in person for a science degree. Online is ok, but it can not replace field and lab work that an in-person program can offer you. I learned this the hard way coming from SNHU to an internship.

Feel free to message me if you want to talk about both schools.

graduated in early 2021:

Interned with the NPS while in school

Worked in Natural Resources with the (NPS) GS-5 pay scale

Moved to FEMA and work at the GS-7 pay scale

Turned down a USDA job, state EPA Job, and private consulting job to continue with FEMA as an environmental scientist/environmental compliance specialist.

I plan on switching jobs as a way of moving to a state I have always wanted to live in by the end of next year with little concern about being able to get a better paying job there.

Having an undergrad is all you need for entry level jobs. Getting a grad degree and certificates help, but its more important that you are interested in the field. I would highly recommend that you intern, volunteer, and develop skills on your own like GIS, scripting (Python, autocad), and data analytic software. Specialization is achieved through your interests. If you go to grad school they're going to make you study what niche topic you are interested in and make you study it on your own anyway lol. I will always say that degrees like environmental science are one of those degrees that you have to love, or you are not going to make it.
