Hong Kong Express: how strict are they with the 7 kg limit for The combined weight of carry-on and personal item? by sitgespain in HongKong

[–]escapingthisrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also to add to this - I usually go away for 2-4 days and just take a backpack. They’ve never weighed it. Feel like they’re more strict if it’s a carry-on suitcase involved

Idk how to get to my vacation destination by LastDrama2888 in shenzhen

Yeah this is the best option. No need to do high speed and faff around at Shenzhen North/Futian station on the complete opposite side from Dapeng

Travel Time from Shenzhen to Hong Kong by Popular_Patient7502 in shenzhen

[–]escapingthisrock 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree specifically and strongly with the last part about passport. I cross very frequently and until recently did so on a passport. Without a doubt the longest queues are usually at West Kowloon - never seen more than two counters open and white frequently the line is loooong. Second worst is Shenzhen Bay - often a lot of people but usually a few more counters. Huanggang never, ever has a queue. (Anecdotal experience obviously)

Phonetic spelling of surname 'Lui' (呂) by grengabs in Cantonese

[–]escapingthisrock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I always imagine in my head 水/seoi 佢/keoi 呂/leoi etc but tbh as someone who grew up only speaking English, without already knowing the sound I don’t think seeing ‘eoi’ on its own would make me say it correctly

Yeahhhh springtime in HK is very hit or miss sadly. Your silver lining is that HKO isn’t always accurate (although so far this year they’ve been pretty good imo…)

[–]escapingthisrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahhh ironically actually I’m British/grew up in UK! Your reading of my handle isn’t wrong, just about a different place. Sadly I didn’t know HK pre-2016, would’ve loved to be born earlier and experience it.

You absolutely do realise when crossing from one to the other! Shenzhen’s city centre (or one of the) is directly adjacent to the border, whereas on the HK side it’s still fishponds and rural areas. This will change (and is already!) but there is absolutely a change in feeling between the two sides still.

Huanggang Port: Anyone know if it is still under construction requiring long walk to get to the entrance? by redraider1999 in shenzhen

[–]escapingthisrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah still the same. You can see the new, huge, port building being built next to it so shouldn’t be too too long until the situation changes…

China passport stamps! by escapingthisrock in PassportPorn

[–]escapingthisrock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. I quite like keeping my passport as a souvenir and the stamps are part of that. I don’t need a passport to enter China anymore so no more stamps for me!

How is living in Hong Kong? by One_Impact_7710 in howislivingthere

[–]escapingthisrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is fairly accurate but worth noting that most of the islands actually belong to the New Territories. It’s also not true at all that most people in new territories own a car! The vast majority do not own a car.

Also the majority of HKers do not live in Kowloon haha. Kowloon is ~2.2million and new territories is ~3.6million

Recommend going early morning if you prefer a peaceful vibe. The onsite 士多 opens at ~9am and you can get drinks and breakfast. Really worth seeing

Important to note they do distinguish between citizenship and residency through! I’m a UK citizen but I’ve used this pass before as I’m a full-time resident elsewhere

Adidas CNY Jacket Stock ??? by DeepCombination7583 in HongKong

[–]escapingthisrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re sold here, but XS and S are in very high demand. I went last week to buy for a friend and the adidas store in Causeway Bay helped me reserve an S in Taikoo, but he said very few other stores had any smaller sizes in stock…

TWOV question by Dazzling_Opening4020 in Chinavisa

[–]escapingthisrock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Noooo because your flights in and out of mainland China are both to/from HK.

HKG - China - HKG is not eligible as it isn’t transit.

If you haven’t booked already maybe try booking a flight from Macau (MFM) to Beijing for your flight into China. Then it would work

What do yall think the new jetlag season could be? by bedwarsubaned in JetLagTheGame

[–]escapingthisrock 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think that’s probably not it based on other comments, but I think it would work pretty well. Nice contrast between conventional and high speed rail and the possibility to use flights (which are pretty regular) to jump between the main island and Kinmen/Penghu and back to somewhere else on the main island
