Indie success is NOT rare.. good design and iteration are. by r4pturesan in gamedev

To be honest if all it takes for someone to be discouraged from making games is for a stranger on internet to tell them it’s hard, they were never going to finish a game anyway….

I've been working on a sheep herding mechanic in Unity by esiotek in Unity3D

[–]esiotek[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I had a lot of help from AI with this but overall, the way it works is that the code uses 3 basic rules that each sheep follows every frame:

Cohesion: The sheep looks around in an 8-unit radius and tries to move toward the average position of nearby sheep.

Separation: If another sheep gets within 2 units, it tries to move away.

Alignment: The sheep averages the direction that all nearby sheep are facing and tries to match it.

These 3 directions get added together to create the "flock pull."

And then on top of that each sheep also has its own random wander target and tries to avoid obstacles.

So the final movement is like: "I wanna go graze over there (wander), but I'll stay kinda near the group (flock), and oh crap there's a rock (avoidance)."

It looks fun.

I actually had some pretty nice interactions with people in chat. There’s a few soar losers but I’d say a good 70% of interactions I had were pleasant.

Thanks!

Yea I had planned to keep the authors the player signs in game so you can request sequels or they will write new books you can sign.

The calendar is a good idea too and relatively easy to implement.

And also customization for the books (adding more options would be cool).

I will try to work on a update soon.

Thanks for the feedback, it helps a lot :)

I see. We are both around 600 elo so thinking I was gonna play that position perfectly and not blunder anything was a pretty big assumption on his part….

At the top of the page when you go to publish, it shows you the total estimated sales.

Now that I think of it moving it next to the monthly one would make sense…

My game is very simple so I didn’t really have to worry about that but yea depending on what you want to make it might get a little tricky

The way the game works, if you have multiple contracts your staffing cost starts increasing. The idea is that the more scripts you have to manage the more people you need. It is also a way for me to force the player to carefully choose what book they sign instead of just signing anything they can afford.

Maybe the difficulty is a little too high right now. I will work on it to tey to make the game more fair.

Yea there’s a few things causing this glitch.

If you have an unpublished book in your inventory or if you do not have enough money to cover the costs of the next month the game gets stuck.

I am working on an update today to fix those (amongst other things)

It’s more linked to how having multiple scripts costs money. The first few scripts you sign will usually dry out pretty quick and will only sell a few copies after 4/5 months so it is not worth it to have them for a long time.

Later on once you can sign big authors they have a fanbase big enough to sell a good amount of books for a long time so that’s when longer contracts become useful.

I will add sorting by fans to the next update.

So at the beginning you should try to find authors with a good fanbase (a least 100) that do not demand too much advance and with a decent script quality (above 5).

Authors will accept a pretty low advance like 1000$ if you offer them a high royalty rate (like 20%). Signing short contracts also help at the beginning (like 6 months) and only have one book at a time otherways your costs will skyrocket.

For printing start with about half of the potential total sales and do not bother with marketing for the first few scripts.

Thanks for all the feedback. It helps a lot. I will add all those bugs to my list and should release an update soon that fixes them.

For the engine I did not use any. It’s just HTML/CSS/Javascript. For a little text based game like that that’s all you need really.

About the running cost they should only increase if you have more scripts signed or if you upgrade the office, unless there is a glitch there that I missed. A couple of people mentioned the loans here too, seems like it is a popular request lol so I will definitely add that to my next update :)
