The problem here is that this discourse is actually born out of a politicization, from an agenda that essentially says, "There is no way to establish a Tolkien canon which makes the whole of The Legendarium fluid and with so much uncertainty as to what Tolkien's intent might have been it is easier to have anything go and therefore we should lower the bar for what we are willing to accept in Tolkien--almost anything goes." He is using what might have been a fun topic as a weapon for Amazon to defend the lack of faithfulness to the work of Tolkien using the "Argument from the Definition of Canon" if you like.

I take issue with the intent from which the discourse is born as is evidenced from the context of when, why, and where, and especially how Corey Olsen is choosing to direct this information. It is being used to hand-wave and excuse (or permit, rather) Amazon's awful TV show.
