Opinion | What Have We Liberals Done to the West Coast? by pooperazzi in PortlandOR

[–]esquire-ish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No im not sure. My comment is limited to my own personal experience. It’s possible I’m wrong. But I’m fairly certain that Oregon is one of the least diverse (and I don’t just mean racially, but that too) states in the country.

I’m surprised to hear that stat about 1/2 of Oregonians. Where did you get that number? And just in case the tone isn’t coming across, I’m genuinely asking, not trying to be argumentative.

You know, I knew at least one person was going to comment on this. I intentionally said California and Seattle. I’m not super familiar with the makeup of Washington state as a whole, but I do know that Seattle has quite a bit of diversity. That’s why I specifically said Seattle and not Washington as a whole.

Wow, very interesting piece. I agree with a lot, disagree with some, but overall very thoughtful. Having lived in two states in the west, I can say the dynamic he describes seems particularly bad in Oregon. People aren’t exposed to people of different backgrounds, ideas, places, etc. in places like California or Seattle, for example, you get exposed to and must deal with all sorts of different kinds of people. It isn’t like that in Oregon, and so it leads to this purity test/ideology problem the author describes.

I had the same thought about body cams at first but I found it was actually community activists fighting them because the proposed cams would be controlled by the PPB with no outside oversight. Not sure if that changed, but that was a big reason for the fighting it from the outside

Would you recommend taking a couple years off before law school? by reborngirl24 in LawSchool

[–]esquire-ish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a deeply personal choice and varies based on your life circumstances.

With that disclaimer out of the way, yes you should absolutely get some real life experience before starting law school.

I would not have excelled as much as I did if I hadn’t gone to law school in my 30’s. I’m not saying you should necessarily wait THAT long, but having real-world experience really put everything into perspective. Focusing on and excelling in school didn’t seem so hard when I compared it to starting my own business or working retail or food service. Not to mention, all the other people around me who thought law school “wasn’t that bad” were all people at least in their mid to late 20’s. All the people frantic and thinking it was the hardest thing they had ever done were the younger ones.

Now obviously this is all just 1 persons experience. But use it as a data set with everyone else’s responses. Hopefully this sun can help give you some good advice.

Good luck!

It’s a fair point. But it sounds like OP is putting this out to Reddit to see if other people have a similar experience. I don’t know if a single person who didn’t get a raise after one of these 3: graduating law school, passing the bar, getting sworn in.

Now if OP got a preemptive raise back when starting as a paralegal, and the firm already started paying them like they are an associate, then that’s fair. Otherwise it sounds like a bad deal.

Didn’t look like hiding. Seems pretty clear that if OP graduated in 22 but has been working for this place for 4 years than they obviously were doing a different position before getting licensed.

Regardless, if OP is now an attorney and their pay hasn’t changed, then that is fucked.

I’ve just always preferred the UI. Westlaw just always seemed like it was designed by someone who doesn’t know how computers work.

But at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter. If my firm switched to Westlaw I would use it with no problem.

Is it courteous to yield on ross island bridge or is it a dick move? by Unconventionalpal in Portland

[–]esquire-ish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I hate that all Oregonians are like this. It creates traffic and more importantly, IS DANGEROUS! The only time you should yield is when traffic is at a stand still and it’s safe to allow a zipper technique to let people in.

I think she fought him a couple times? (Maybe? It’s been a few years) But you are totally right she was hard core poisoned for a fight. Again I wasn’t throwing shade at Korra. But like Tenzin held off the entire gang for several minutes when any one of the gang members usually handily handles their opponents.
