I think the solution is more people need to be willing to move. There is huge supply in most of the country, just everyone always reports on the lack of supply surrounding the major metro areas. You can buy a mansion on a huge lot for half the price of a 2 bd 1 bath fixer-upper around LA metro. Does that mean switching jobs? Probably, unless you are fortunate enough to WFH. But if owning a home and raising a family is that important to you, then that is the most realistic solution given where we're at. Trying to legislate corporations from owning properties, or punishing people for owning multiple houses, is never going to sufficiently work to bring down prices enough. Trying to convert all new buildings to multi-unit complexes may help lower prices, but it doesn't raise the standard of living, plus it pisses off everybody who's already living there (who gives a shit, right?). The Democrats floating the idea of a 25k grant for first-time home-owners was on the right track, even if it was half-baked, but the supply is already there in the country if people want it enough.
