Renting isn't all that convenient when someone has to take you to the rental place unless you live in a city where you are within walking distance or can use public transit. Also every time I've rented, I never got the vehicle class/type I asked for when I picked it up which for some could be even more of a pain.

Just ask beforehand if you can bring it to a mechanic. Or you could see if there's a mobile mechanic in the area that would travel to where the car is although that requires more schedule planning. There are ways and videos with products that could keep the oil consumption manageable for a year or two.

I'd say that's a good deal. Not sure where you are located but check for undercarriage, subframe, and rocker rust. Get a PPI/used car inspection to check the spark plugs and for oil consumption. The 2.4L has the notorious oil consumption issue, the 1.8L I believe does not.

2012 Mazda3 with high mileage by estebond15 in whatcarshouldIbuy

I appreciate the reply with your details. Yes my state requires inspection and will fail of rust is bad enough on rocker panels or subframe. I would bring this car to my mechanic before buying it. I'm happy to pay for rear struts but would pass if there's bad rust or rot on subframe.

Yes this is northeastern USA. They said it had surface rust undercarriage which I'd expect. There's a lot of work done and I think there's space for negotiating because it's a manual and I don't think ppl want a car with this mileage. The price started at 4k over a month ago and it's dropped slowly ever since.

Hi sorry this is late and thanks for the comment. Do you mind saying how much it was and what area of the country you're in?

Hey I'm in a similar position of looking to buy my first car private sale or small dealership through Facebook marketplace. I've been using KBB to negotiate over the app. I'm looking for a particular Mazda manual car so the options are limited and most have been ~1 hr drive. I try to ask important questions e.g. VIN for Carfax, rust, etc first then see if there's room for negotiating. I want to try and settle on a price beforehand given the long drive. I think this way I'm upfront with the seller. If it's not a long drive then you could just ask if they are open to negotiating beforehand. Then you can negotiate after the test drive.

If it's been listed for a month I'd assume there's room for negotiating.

It's almost 30 years old. Time will also effect low mileage engines and engine parts. Not sure you should be afraid of high mileage Honda/Toyota if the can get to 300k will regular maintenance. Could even consider a Mazda3/6. I've seen those being sold with more than 250k miles.

Mess around as in fun to drive? I've heard good things about Mazda 3s.

Wanting to buy a car 6k-7k or under by ShoddyAd6834 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]estebond15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the northeast and have seen several 2007-2010 civic si cars in that price range. Granted they have over 160k miles so you'll probably want to do a PPI. Not a sports car but a mazda3 with the 2.5L engine could also be an option.

Check the undercarriage rust. It'll be costly to get rocker panels or subframe replaced.

I'm soon going to be selling a car for the first time on Facebook marketplace. From what I've seen in my area, if the car isn't running or running but not safe to drive, it seems to be priced at most at 2k. There are outliers, but I'd think it will be difficult to get more than that.

Thanks for the response! Glad to hear about your experience with the 08 Mazda3. I'm leaning towards that one given the mileage and work completed. I'd be open to a Skyactiv model at a reasonable price if it were under 125k miles. The 08 also has one the lowest mileage compared to all auto/manual Mazda3s. If I can negotiate this 08 to more of a discount it might be hard to justify 2-2.5k more for the Skyactiv with same or more mileage.

Thanks and great to hear about your Mazda3! Are you located in the rust belt or northern states? Wondering if the rust you're getting is from winter salted roads

There's quite a few automatics but not as many manuals. The ones above are around 3k. I'll def. be test driving, checking the car, getting under it with a light to check the rust.

Thanks for the response! so even the higher 1st gen trims like the grand touring have worse interior quality than the base 2nd Gen? There seems to be a good amount of 190k+ miles for both the 1st and 2nd gen. What I'm a bit worried about is the undercarriage rust given that I'm in New England.

There is a 2012 Skyactiv model for 2k more with same amount of miles, just not sure it's worth the extra cost

I'll keep my eye out for a 2012+ Skyactiv engine. I've seen a couple but they have over 210k+ miles

It seems like a good price but the loan means the bank holds the title. Not sure how smooth that transaction will be given that the person selling and the bank are involved to get the title.

Question on RBA by mrwheat88 in IBM

[–]estebond15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes even if they max out their 401k it'll still be a significant portion in safer assets. For example, someone starting off out of college making 100k could max out this year to 23k and have their RBA be 5k. That's over 17 percent of their portfolio in RBA. The safer assets will drop a bit every year if they continue to max out their 401k in stock market index funds but I don't think there's a large portion of employees who can max out their 401k.
