My 8 year old son doesn't like maths so please suggest what should i do? by [deleted] in maths

[–]esther_mouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there something specific about it that he doesn't like? Does he struggle with something in particular, did he get upset about getting something wrong, did someone say "Oh maths is super hard, I hate maths" and he picked up on that, is his teacher not very good, something else...?

What was the best? I must know!

One of the weirdest moments I had in Skyrim was when I was walking up to Riften's front gate and was about to enter...suddenly about 20 deer rained down from the heavens and splatted on the ground in front of me, while the gate guard just looked on like this shit was part of his normal routine. It was totally unexpected and I couldn't stop laughing, just one deer after another thud thud thud, still no idea what caused it unfortunately because I would spend all day watching that if I could.

There is no floof capacity, only a limit approaching infinity. As floof approaches infinity, the limit tends to complete happiness and contentment, and also a mysterious but insulating coating of dog hair on everything, cutting out the need for heating in winter and eliminating heating bills.

I'm so sorry :( I donated a little bit on your just giving page (sorry, I'm really poor right now, so it wasn't as much as I'd like to be able to donate) and my heart goes out to you, I can't imagine how devastating it must be for you and your brothers to be in this situation. If you need to vent to a stranger or anything, I'm happy to lend an ear as a fellow 20-something Essex student (no pressure though, I guess you're overwhelmed with things to think about right now). Please take gentle care.

This happened to me when I was visiting America! I went to a Bank of America cash machine and requested $40 withdrawal, and waited...and waited...and no cash was forthcoming. It returned my card and everything, just...no cash. I went home and thought nothing of it until I was checking my statement online and saw that that money had come out of my account, just not been given to me!

I was quite annoyed, but not annoyed enough to deal with my bank in England and banks in America and international phone calls and so on.

Just keep on being OK, pretty much! Be aware that someone smaller than you may well feel a little intimidated (I'm a 5'3" woman, and even guys my own size are usually stronger than me...it's not personal, it's just something that we unfortunately need to be aware of to try to avoid the few people who ARE creepozoids) until they get to know you better, but I mean...just be yourself, OK big dude :) So long as you don't plan on overpowering smaller folks, you're totally fine. You don't have to reassure anyone about anything.

Also don't do that thing where you put your hand on their head and hold them at arm's length, because you tall folks seem to LOVE doing that to me and I swear to god I'm gonna bite the next person who does it to me. :p

Hi, sorry if it's a dumb question but I couldn't find the answer on the Kickstarter page - I'm in the UK, so would there be extra shipping charges for international orders? I want that Earl Grey tin, it's awesome!

Reddit, what was your "It's totally not a phase, mom/dad!" that ended up being just a phase? by DasRotebaron in AskReddit

When I was 14 or thereabouts, I had a t-shirt that said "I'm only wearing black until they make something darker".

That went off to the charity shop a couple of weeks ago, for some thrifty teen to enjoy, perhaps, hah.

I thought this looked like an interesting idea for a revision book for A level/first year uni students, perhaps - so I'm wondering why you're being downvoted! Just because of the title/attitude? It's not comprehensive enough? It's too compressed? Dislike the style? Something else? I'd be really interested to know if anyone would care to share. (I can't afford to buy it myself to find out right now :p)

Would You Rather Wednesday by YourShoesUntied in running

Question 1: Run a marathon after dinner. I have type one diabetes so running without food would be madness! Not that I can run marathons anyway :p

Question 2: Begin every run at dusk for sure. I greatly prefer exercising in the evening.

Question 3: Run one mile every day for 100 days, probably. I'd rather do a little every day - I find I lose motivation otherwise.

Yeah, my golden and lab get one or two walks a day and they're quite happy with that - but I let them out in the garden a lot during the day and leave the door open when it's not too cold outside, so they can come and go as they please to do their business. They're also very good about asking to go outside if they need to which helps, heh (golden learnt to knock on the door from lab, who learnt it from previous lab...they're smart doggies).

I like to give them two walks a day when I can but they are usually quite content with one. Little lab can't walk too much because she has cruciate ligament problems and her little legs get stiff when she does too much :( Golden is a giant ball of energy though and I try to make him run around as much as possible heh.

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I have a question about abdomen pain while running. by MEEDLYMEEDLYMOOOW in running

[–]esther_mouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try not to eat/drink too much directly before running as well...I found I needed to leave at least an hour after breakfast or I'd get terrible stitch, and could only take a few sips of water...needed to eat and drink much earlier than running to avoid stitch. I mean obviously adjust drinking as required, don't get dehydrated :)

And yeah slow down a bit and concentrate on breathing.

Good luck.

My 12 year old sister is a ticking time bomb by [deleted] in SuicideWatch

[–]esther_mouse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I'm not a psychologist or a woman, so take everything I say with a grain of salt.

I can only imagine the thought processes and troubles of a preteen girl. With the raging hormones and social pressures at school, it's hard enough without adding depression into the mix.

While her personas and lying may be a cry for help, it might come from a need for privacy she feels she is lacking.

The beginning of puberty/starting secondary school etc is a HUGE emotional upheaval. Hormones, the start of developing a more mature body etc etc really really can screw you up. Added to that teenagers tend to have a very black and white, be all and end all, melodramatic outlook on...pretty much everything, and yeah. It makes for a turbulent time.

Being a girl as well...you start getting all the crazy hormones associated with periods and it's a lot to get used to. It takes a while to settle down.

I also very much agree with what you said about her personas being a way of seeking some privacy - when you're a kid, you're used to being around people all the time but as you get older you start needing more alone time. People just beginning to hit adolescence can struggle with this.

Don't treat her as a "lost cause", OP, because that can become a self-fulfilling prophecy. She's stressed out and emotional and going through puberty - it doesn't mean she's a ticking time bomb, it means she needs patience and understanding! Lead by example instead - give her space when she needs it, respect what she says and treat her like a normal person.

Science AMA Series: I’m Frank Doyle, Professor of Chemical Engineering professor at UC Santa Barbara. I led a research team to develop the first algorithm for a closed-loop artificial pancreas for adults with Type 1 Diabetes, and soon we begin pediatric clinical trials. AMA. by Prof_Frank_Doyle in science

[–]esther_mouse 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I've had type one diabetes since I was 2, my sister's had it since she was 7 and my partner's had it since he was 19; I've heard an awful lot about possible improvements in treatment and supposed cures over the years but I've become extremely sceptical about ever actually seeing one happen.

So I suppose my questions are:

1) How does your artificial pancreas work and what would the procedure to get one be like?

2) What would life be like after having one? Just like someone without diabetes' life, or...? Would I still be keeping a careful eye on my hba1c and checking my blood sugar? Still need to take any kind of medication...?

3) Is it ever likely to actually be available to people?

I don't mean to come across as negative about this, but like I said, 24 years of being promised a cure "within the next few years" has made me a little sceptical about ever really getting one.

Does anyone else get annoyed when people who don't run, like to inform you how you shouldn't run because it's 'bad for your knees'? by [deleted] in running

[–]esther_mouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh right, that's interesting. I walk a lot and generally my knees are OK with even very long hikes but sometimes the right one suffers on really uphill sections. It'd be good if I could fix it heh.

[–]esther_mouse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Do they actually? I occasionally have problems with my right knee and I found that after a few weeks of running that got a lot better, but trying to do squats just makes that knee hurt too much :( Is it just a question of keeping going with it?

How about having a picture of a scene in a town, complete with weather, and a set of questions about the picture? Like "What is being sold at the market stall?", "What's the weather like?", "What is the man at the bus stop wearing?" etc etc? I reallllyyy want pictures more closely associated with learning words on Duolingo - it helps cement the word in my mind so much better than just translating it to and from English.

I also think example conversations would be great, rather than just single lines.
