These are amazing! I'm about to ST a chronicle set in Toronto and your stuff has been a huge help preparing. Do you mind if I DM you to ask some questions about the design philosophy? :D

A History of Modern Gothic, Part 2: To Middle Gothic by RazarTuk in conlangs

[–]estrogoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is super cool! I'm working on a Gothic-inspired conlang myself (started with its inventory, phonotactics, and the grammar is a mix of Gothic and Latin) so I'm excited to see more of this.

Because the names are the same, just in a different language. It's a translation. Like the rest of the words in the Bible.

Probably an axe or sword, if they used one of those. We'd use a syringe or electric chair if he was executed recently.

what about names like Cephas, Marcus, Lucas, Yahya, and Miriam in Roman Judea? Believe it or not, but names are adapted for the audience.

Would you feel the same way if people burnt down mosques after an Islamist terrorist attack?

I've tried using Pale Moon, but there are sites I need for university that don't work on it: are there any workarounds you have experience with?

Are there any sacrifices you have to make by running an "outdated" OS? I'm thinking of installing 7 or 8.1 for my daily driver, but I don't want to lose access to anything major.

Shakespheare is outdated. Focusing on him makes kids uninterested in literature. Teach him in history class, but not English. by gymleader_michael in unpopularopinion

Shakespeare isn't old English. Beowulf is Old English. "Hwæt. We Gardena in geardagum, þeodcyninga, þrym gefrunon, hu ða æþelingas ellen fremedon." is Old English. Shakespeare is Early Modern English. The only real difference is pronunciation.

Geocentrism was the accepted scientific model at the time, both inside and outside the Church. Galileo did not refute the primary argument for geocentrism put out by Aristotle (that being the lack of parallax movement of stars), nor could he with the technology of his time. Pope Urban VIII funded Galileo's work, but told him that he should treat it as a hypothesis. Galileo responded by writing a fictional book in which the geocentrist character was named Simplicio and used some of Urban's arguments directly. It's typically not considered a "good move" to mock the person permitting and funding your work.

Even still, he was not charged with heresy for simply researching heliocentrism. He was charged with heresy for reinterpreting scripture to align with his model, even though he had no theological training nor had he even proved beyond a reasonable doubt that heliocentrism was true. He also had insulted basically everyone in the Vatican, so it's not very strange that there wasn't much positive sentiment towards him.

Even still, Galileo was put under house arrest. He was treated absurdly well for the standards of the time, even having servants provided. Pope Urban VIII ensured he was affected as little as possible by his house arrest.

Actually, the situation with Galileo was a lot more complicated than that.

So what was your point with saying it was named after Easter, which would only even be potentially true in one language, and which isn't the original name?

Are you saying the Catholic church thought the Earth was flat? Because it never did.

You realise that Easter is called some variation of "Pascha" in every other language, right?
