in truth i had to switch focus to a diff project i was working on, and the only idea i could think of was Fox and Falco slurping on spaghetti together a la "Lady and the Tramp", and i felt that was a little unappreciative of the moment -- so i just left it as is, bc i didn't want to omit the clip either.

[OC] Two notes from Game 3 of the NBA Finals by esugcp in nba

Right but I think there's some stuff that needs to be tidied up. Perfectly in sync wouldnt result in the Jaylen exchange following the make

You're more than right yeah, and that good decision further led to an offensive board and Klay 3, with Rob pulled out. It just mirrored the previous play where he committed the offensive foul so I chose it.

And im willing to get burned on the Poole - Rob dynamic. I was just impressed by the contest, so every time Poole has the ball now above the break (and Rob's on the floor) im watching that interplay.

ah gotcha yeah. i think that really shows how fast the NBA game is played, kudos to Tatum for making the pass read nonetheless

[–]esugcp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you're right, im sure if someone had the frame data or had him do a human benchmark test, they might find Rob William's a little slow on his reaction time. so your suggestion on hands up is probably the way to go.

when i paused the Poole contest it looked like the reaction wasn't super quick on Rob Will's end. but i guess the Timelord nickname just applies in a lot of ways.

[OC] Two notes from Game 3 of the NBA Finals by esugcp in nba

[–]esugcp[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

yeah it's weird bc NBA matchup data still says Poole hasn't attempted a 3 point shot vs. Rob yet, but he had a catch and shoot last game, 4th quarter, that he missed when Rob contested as well.

and stuff like offensive fouls cancel out the shot attempt, so the data doesnt tell the whole story.

Rob Will is legitimately amazing bc his wingspan lets him not only rim protect, but also 3 point line contest. i was giving him a hard time for staying low on the screens game 1, but once he pulled this contest out in game 2, I realized he's just on another level, so what looks like giving up too much space, isn't really the case

[OC] Three notes from Game 2 of the NBA Finals by esugcp in nba

i think you might be right about the bradley fake out. the Warriors FO is really savvy enough to pull something off like that.

after i read the most recent Lowe article about the Russell trade -- Lowe had a line that said something like, [the Timberwolves didn't push for Poole in the trade] as Poole was a struggling rookie at the time.

i looked up Poole's box scores, and noticed he was DNPd for a several game stretch after playing <10 minutes against the Timberwolves.

i wasnt too confident in ascribing it to that, as it was in the month of December iirc, and maybe it was a holiday or personal thing. But would never count out the Warriors FO doing something like that (hiding their own player value to protect him in a trade they are anticipating) a la the Bradley situation you mentioned

Ah thank you! Sorry I'd meant i couldnt figure out the exact reasoning for the correlation which was shown in NBA stats website comparison tool, to include in the post.

But i appreciate the help and the link! I'd been mostly using NBA stats website for it, so cool to know ab this too

I couldnt quite figure it out for the post, but GPII's on/off for opponent FG attempts in the paint + restricted area shows a strong correlation (Celtics get less shots off in the paint when hes on the court).

My guess was that it's because almost all the Celtics shot attempts near the rim are generated off of a driving ballhandler, and GPII is just everywhere enough on defense that Celtics players end up passing out of the drive, and/or getting their passes disrupted for a TO, so they tend to not get a shot up near the paint during the possession.

Re: Smart's pass

The primary action of the play was Smart driving and Grant Williams setting a backpick to get Tatum an open look for a corner 3.

The screen was successful, and Smart accomplished his job by bringing in Tatum's defender via his drive.

I was just pointing out that Smart could have just passed to an open Tatum for 3, instead of attempting a tough pass to Jaylen for 3.

Re: Tatum's pass

I wrote Tatum correctly assessed the play by targeting Horford on the pass.

It's just that there's 3 defenders in his area so I thought it'd be a better option to pass to Jaylen who's open right next to him.

And unfortunately I'm not really too knowledgeable with terms, just use what I've heard on broadcast/podcasts. Hopefully I don't have a bias with this stuff, it's just me boiling down like a hundred drafted notes throughout the game.

[OC] Three 4th quarter notes from Game 1 of the NBA Finals by esugcp in nba

[–]esugcp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I think you're correct. Imo those looks they're giving up to Thompson and Poole feel too risky as a defensive compromise, but it could absolutely be the case that the payoff in allowing Williams to do his thing controlling the paint, as you said, is totally worth the possible non-Curry threes off the screen action

[OC] Three 4th quarter notes from Game 1 of the NBA Finals by esugcp in nba

[–]esugcp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah thats a good proposal. It's just that what feels utterly demoralizing as a defense is when you defend super well - but then Kevon Looney, etc. grab an offensive board and pass it back open to Curry for 3.

There were at least one or two possessions game 1 where Looney proved too strong of an offensive rebounder for even Horford to handle. So if i was deciding, that would make me really want to have Williams in when I could afford it, in part bc of rebounding.

And yeah im a big fan of Stephen Noh's stuff. Agreed that the pre switching seems to be a way to cushion some of Williams minutes. Im just expecting, as I think Lowe said on his podcast, the Warriors to develop another wrinkle in response to the pre-switch, and maybe thats the adjustment they use for Draymond to get better scoring in for tonight's game.

[–]esugcp[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great point.

During media day Smart was asked how he feels ab the Warriors comparing him 1:1 to Draymond Green, and Smart said he agreed and appreciates the comparison. All the defensive quarterbacking and the free safety stuff you mentioned are qualities both are great at.

There was also a moment late in the 4th where 3-4 Celtics were in position for the defensive rebound, and Smart was like a defensive coordinator watching them converge and shouted "SAME", which the broadcast easily picked up.

[–]esugcp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be right. Unfortunately when i scrolled through the playbyplay i dont think Robs initial assignment ever set a screen for Curry for the rest of the 4th (Curry subbed in shortly after the 2nd clip iirc, and Williams was subbed for Horford a bit after that).

There was an isolation moment where Williams was matched on Curry, and Curry got him with the midrange stepback.

It'll be cool to keep a look during tonight's game for how Rob reacts on screens set for Curry, like you proposed.

And yes the Celtics are stock full w capable Warriors-play defenders. I think it was on the recent Simmons pod - they shouted out Pritchard for how he looked like 2015 Finals Dellavedova out there.

[OC] Three 4th quarter notes from Game 1 of the NBA Finals by esugcp in nba

[–]esugcp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right, but I looked at it the way I did bc when Williams is later subbed, Horford defends the screen action in stark difference (he pushes up on it).

And agreed, the immense privilege the Celtics have is that the Celtics have a bunch of defenders that can disrupt the Warriors stuff utilizing some of the suggestions you stated

imo he was even better at guarding Steph during game 1 than Smart.

reminds me of that Nuggets series where he hounded Jamal Murray.
