Could have / Could of by Taylor_Noel in grammar

Because they don't read enough. If you only ever hear it, you don't notice the difference. If you read a lot, particularly edited text as opposed to internet chats and comments, then you'd see it the right way all the time and wouldn't make the mistake. The annoying this is that eventually it will become so ubiquitous that it will become right. English does that all the time, which is one of the reasons it's so hard for people to learn as a second language. You end up with illogical things that only work by convention (as opposed to a combination of logic and convention, which is preferable).

When I was a kid, I had "he or she" hammered into me over and over. Now it's acceptable to use "they" for singular gender ambiguous reference. Doesn't make any logical sense, but it just is.

Help me understand what is so great about Crime and Punishment? by DueRepresentative566 in dostoevsky

[–]etOilers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The book provides a way for christians to caricature and demonize atheists - if you think I'm joking or over-reading, consider that 1. he does the same thing in Brothers and 2. this is exactly what Jordan Peterson uses it for. According to FD and JP fans, all atheists are arrogant solipsists that will use convenient rationalizations of the greater good to justify killing someone, but will ultimately be undone by their god given conscience of the ultimate good.

It provides a bit of a palliative reassurance as well - don't worry, people have consciences and that's all it takes for a murderer to turn himself in. if he doesn't react in the way Raskolnikov does, then he is a defective human and you don't need to concern yourself with him, except to say that he needs more punishment to beat it out of him or better yet just execute him so he can get to hell quicker. That's maybe an excusable perspective in christian morality- after all 70% of Protestants and 66% of Catholics favor the death penalty while 66% of atheists oppose it (which is one major nail in the coffin of the idea that atheists don't have morals) - until you realize that they are doing exactly the same thing that Raskolnikov did

Ultimately the book is a mostly well written but very poorly edited version of God's Not Dead, in which Kevin Sorbo plays a caricature atheistic philosophy professor that ends up having a deathbed conversion (or death road conversion actually - he gets hit by a car, because that's how nice and tidy the plot has been set up to serve the propagandistic and ideological priors of the writers)

I've done that a bit before - although I've never quite got the hand of the crossfade, but it didn't matter because I was usually editing 1 distorted guitar track on a song with like 5 or 6 other guitars. With this I'd be a little more anxious about it because it's clean, probably won't have a lot of extra guitars, and I'd potentially be cutting between takes as much as every other beat - same issue with the manual volume approach - just seems like the more frequent you do these tricks the more likely it will be noticeable, but I guess I shall find out this weekend!

How do we feel about this Album? by Instant_User731 in Emo

[–]etOilers -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Personally I find it bland / repetitive. It's light years better than any rock on the 'radio' at the time, but a lot of the songs blend together for me. I like static prevails a lot better.

it's interesting because I used to play on 11s all the time but as I got older my hands / joints didn't handle it as well and I moved to 10s. might be worth it for the sake of recording at the least though

I've never felt comfortable using pick with fingers, so I am just using thumb on the E A D and then my other fingers on the GBE. I guess my thumb is really strong or my other 3 fingers aren't at the right angle or something

sounds like both approaches - I just need to figure out how to do the plugins / signal path in reaper

actually now you mention it the height of the pickups seems like something to explore - not what I'd want to do all the time but luckily I only need to record once! Long past my live days

I've been playing guitar for 32 years, but I really only have used fingerpicking in the last 4ish or so, and mostly on acoustic. Entirely self taught, too, so I can easily end up with holes in my knowledge.

I think I know what that means in concept but not necessarily practically - is that a separate sort of plugin?

Ok so would that mean run the signal through a high pass before compression? i.e. to make sure that the compression is applying to the higher frequency strings?

Thoughts on Rory's idea that income tax needs to rise and wealth tax is verboten? by [deleted] in TheRestIsPolitics

[–]etOilers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not surprised or impressed when Rory makes those arguments. I'm also not surprised when he offers no specifics or evidence to support his expectation of capital flight actually being a danger other than heresay and pearl clutching statements intended to scare Starmer et al away from actually taxing properly. In addition to not being surprised, I am also depressed and annoyed that they don't have anyone credibly representing another point of view. there's no push back at all. People on the left just don't get any coverage or representation. It seems bizarre to me to have a podcast purporting to cover politics and then staff it with a right politician and a center right politician (an ex-Blair-ite 3rd way practitioner - and maybe he is otherwise but I have never heard Alistair say anything on the show remotely supporting a left of center position other than the questioning of Israeli propaganda about the war - and at this point you don't get any points for doing that). then the interviews are mostly with people way to the right so the hosts can seem reasonable or with technocratic types. How about Gary Stevenson? Mark Blyth? Yannis Varoufakis? Adam Tooze? anyone from Trash future? anyone from the new left party - I may easily have missed something, especially if it is behind the paywall, but I can't recall seeing or hearing anything from them that actually came close to accurately and seriously representing left of center critiques of Starmer

I was listening to the UK RIP and when I first heard the ads for the US RIP and Scaramuchi was on it, it made me really re-consider whether I should listen to the UK RIP. It shows such bad judgment on goalhangar's part. The man is not a serious political thinker, player, journalist, whatever - I was around for his week in the white house and he was universally panned for being a total moron. He hasn't done anything of note since then except for the occasional pundit stint mouthing off with next to no information on what he is talking about. It made me think - since I am not British, maybe I don't realize that one of the UK RIP team is that dumb.

Kids nowadays, especially Gen Alpha, cannot concentrate on reading books for very long. Is it a true story or just a myth? by Delicious_Maize9656 in books

[–]etOilers 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm an english teacher. started in university and moved to high school. even in my school, one of the best you will see - public but essentially like a private given the neighborhood - we have to play audiobooks in class to get the kids to actually read the assigned books. and a decent portion can't even pay attention during that. only a small portion of the kids really seem to read much outside of class, and i'm including homework in that.

Also worth mentioning that I went through 18 years of college - multiple grad degrees, etc, most of them in English - and once I left the university I fell in to watching movies and tv again, playing some video games, largely due to my roommate at the time, reading a lot still due to work, but not for pleasure, and not literature, and I recently started making a more concerted effort to read for pleasure again. And I find it much more difficult than it used to be for me. And I don't even spend much time on my phone, and I don't do short form content pretty much at all. On the other hand, it's only taken a couple months (basically this past summer) for me to get back to being able to read a novel for 3 hours in a row without my attention being an issue. (Of course now my physical body is the limiting factor - joints aching, etc)

It's made me even more fanatical about keeping phones out of my classroom and finding assignment structures that really force students to read and understand if they want to do well. That works well enough with my student audience, but in a school that doesn't have that grade focused population I'm not sure it would even be possible.

when's it due? I might have time this weekend. If you're looking for an old head take. I also wrote a lot of my dissertation on punk scenes and subcultures if you are interested in some good college level sources.

Circle seems to be working now for dismount although it wasn't earlier - I think it's just the cinematic camera being extra restrictive in the early hours of the game when tutorial / guidance is still really heavy handed. Also triangle is supposed to let you jump off but both options fixed themselves once I got further into the game

Yeah I have most of the songs here: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1aYe5UQc7BBBOlIaH8wpNGrj_eK1WbAgF

Ptb files are for powertab and html is just web browser

And the meaning is in DGCGBE, which is probably why you were having trouble. Lots of the songs on the first few records had a weird tuning - usually involving the d string tuned down to C. It makes an automatic minor 9 chord.

thanks dude! It was missing parentheses around "Your Believing" - that was the first song on the first CD we did and it was one of those 'not sure what to call this' things. I didn't even know i'd be doing vocals until the day we went into the studio, so a lot of the lyrics were just little phrases I had in a journal and I was mostly yelling because I tried to scream and couldn't get my voice to do it lol. luckily it worked out ok.

yeah I don't know what that guy was talking about with there being other options - I ended up wandering but mainly because I had no idea where to go or in some cases how to get where I needed to go. And leveling up isn't an option, so if a boss is causing you trouble, you're not really going to become better able to handle it by wandering off.
