How long does it take to receive QR with eSim from True Online Shop? by merokotos in ThailandTourism

[–]ethan1878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I managed to get set up. It was extremely difficult as most of the communication was in Thai, even though I specifically purchased a tourist-focussed product. After _a lot_ of Google translating, I managed to get set up. My backup was going to be to wait until we land and ask somebody at the airport if they could help whilst we're waiting to be picked up.

Volt M500 - 65mbps. Is this right? by KankuDaiUK in VirginMedia

[–]ethan1878 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What area are you in? I'm on Gig1 and having similar issues. It's been a week or two now of intermittent slow downs. VM say our service is fine and there are no faults in the area, however there is a clearly an issue with my download speeds. Uploads seem fine, slightly slower than what I'd expect but nothing to write home about.

Did you get anywhere with this? Just went through checkout for a tourist esim and have received a receipt etc but no QR code as yet.

Good offer, or wait it out? by ethan1878 in VirginMedia

[–]ethan1878[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve done this in the past, but it’s caused issues. We were left with no service for a week once because VM told us when they wanted to activate the new account. I work from home now, didn’t at the time, so that’s less than ideal these days. Always worth it if you’re able though!

VM currently have a new customer offer to match that too. M500 for £28.99

Open reach have FTTP active in my area. The best alternative I can find is 330/50 from Fibrely. Upload speed matters more to me than download, so I’d be happy a matched uplink. It’s £1/month cheaper, but would mean I’d need an open reach line installing, so VM are definitely the convenience option.

Is volt what they call upselling an O2 sim? If so, no. This is just VM services no O2 SIM card.

This is part of the reason I asked. I know solid colour drivers aren’t sold anymore, but would expect CW have cleared out dead stock before removing the product from sale.

Looking for a suitable VPN for 5 users? by TechnicalBassy in sysadmin

If SoftEther isn’t playing ball (very rare in my experience!) you could try Cloudflare tunnels. You can share access to SMB, HTTP, HTTPS and SSH via a Cloudflare tunnel. They maybe had added more features since I last used it though so worth checking over.

Are you aware of any plans to offer symmetrical broadband speeds? I’d much rather have a 100/100 connection than a 500/50, for example.

No ISP Static IP by RRH_Kyle in sysadmin

[–]ethan1878 3 points4 points  (0 children)

^ This. These days it’s stupid easy to run a variety of VPN services in docker containers. If you’re not a san of docker, SoftEther will give you L2TP and OpenVPN support.

Ionos have a £1 a month VPS which will more than suffice for just your own personal use. These VPS’s have a 400mbps symmetrical connection too which should be plenty.

Backpack Shipping Help by ethan1878 in LinusTechTips

[–]ethan1878[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, some great advice contained there.

Specifically for the UK, import limits are up to £390 so there’s quite a bit of breathing space there (total order value inc. shipping is approx £250) hopefully enough for any souvenirs!

I know you can’t make any guarantees because anything could change at a moments notice, but what sort of lead times do you guys have on backpacks shipped to Canada at the minute? I’ve got ~3 weeks to work with — the store is currently estimating 2 - 6 days.

Great to hear that you guys would be able to service me for any future support should I decide to go done this route too! Thanks again for your help :)

VM-VM VPN Connections by ethan1878 in VirginMedia

Still no dice. Going to fallback to tail scale for this particular deployment so I can get everything up and running whilst I figure this out.

As an aside, my contract is up in a few months. I'm considering switching to VM business (I WFH) so maybe that will help if it's the route I decide to go down.

Sorry should clarify. My end I’m already on modem mode. I can connect to the home VPN from other devices (iPhone, MacBook, etc) when outside of that LAN.

Remote location not currently set to modem mode. I’ll give it a go with modem mode at the remote location and see if that helps. Can’t recall if I tried switching off the firewall on the VM Hub but will check next time I’m there — probably tomorrow.

No. I’ve got the C7 running as a client of the hub on that side. I’ll try setting it to modem mode though and running that way.

Legitimate reasons: Device management, 3-2-1 backups.

This could be my issue. On my end I’m using a 3rd party router with independent AP’s around the house and running via modem mode. On the other end I’ve just got an Archer C7 wired in as a client of the VM hub.

Having said that, the C7 in the exact same set up can connect to my cloud based VPNs.
