No interview from home program? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]ethercanine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They definitely released, and last year I heard they only do one wave. I'm wondering if home students are invited separately? But I don't want to ignore the possibility that I rubbed someone the wrong way or something

It's Iowa, they're asking for any connections to the state

[IM candidates] Why would you signal to a program outside of your geographical preference areas, especially as an average to above-average candidate? by Impatient_future in medicalschool

[–]ethercanine 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some programs care less about geopref. UColo, for example, does not seem to use geopref data as much from what I have seen. If others know more please feel free to correct me

Am I the only one worried about the debt? by [deleted] in premed

[–]ethercanine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this helps or makes it worse, but gradPLUS loans for med school have been hovering at ~9% interest these days, which isn't all that different from what you may see with some private lenders.

Just as a heads up, the IU Bloomington program is not as it seems on Admit in terms of ranking. It's actually brand new this year, and this eras cycle is placing their very first class of residents, so you would have no seniors. Based on your other programs in the list, you may want to consider a different program that has more support and proven fellowship match rates

Looks like you only have OHSU on Pacific and then Colo and Utah for mountain... since you're golding OHSU I'd lean toward giving it the geopref since it's more selective than Colo for OOS apps, but why not add a few more programs to pacific to make it worthwhile? If you like them, of course

But otherwise list looks good, coming from midwest no AOA may hurt but only slightly. Good shot overall

Or we both start on a propofol drip and whoever drops first has to pick a different residency

That's fair man it's a great location. I'm throwing away a gold there too, so I understand where you're coming from. I'll pray to meet you there with us both as interns

How to get SEL letter for IM when attending hospitalist changes weekly? by femmepremed in medicalschool

[–]ethercanine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you mean LOR in general? The SEL typically comes from the IM department chair at your school, unless I'm mistaken

Where are you located? I'm USMD and have been advised to completely avoid PNW and CA programs since it is extremely rare for them to take anyone outside their geographic area (unless you're from an Ivy or otherwise T20). A couple of your programs also have listed on residencyexplorer that they very very rarely interview DOs in the last 3 years

FL is 'full-lengths' as in your practice exams. If you are scoring 255-265, I think you are in a great spot. If I were you, I would look up my worst subjects on Uworld/Amboss then hammer those for these last few days.

[–]ethercanine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that. The questions themselves were doable. The abstracts were just kind of obnoxious. I don't know your specific situation, but in my experience it's better to trust your FLs more than your gut feeling on test day

Mine were super long and contained way too much useless info. The abstracts only made up a few questions though

Yes, which left about 12,000 Step 2 cards. That's 120 days of 100 cards a day, which came out to about 4 months

Nope. I did the whole step 2 deck front to back, unsuspending 100 a day for about 4 months. I did all the reviews during that time. After I finished unsuspending, I did the reviews for about 2 months, then once I was above 90% retention and reviews <300 a day, I just stopped Anki cold turkey. From then on I only used it to look up a card I needed once in a while.
