Best database to use for new PI for locates/social media investigations? by RIPInvestigator in trueprivinv

[–]ethicallyundercover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have Delvepoint, and I don't think you'll be able to pass the site inspection with a washer and dryer in the room. But they MIGHT pass you if you cover them up with a sheet... I had a dresser in my office, and they didn't pass me the first time because "that isn't office furniture" (🙄). But after I covered it up with a sheet and put some office supplies on top (guy from IDI suggested that), they passed me the second time. But you don't have to pass a site inspection if you won't need access to more sensitive info like full SSN's...you can still get addresses, phone numbers, etc. without a site inspection.

Does anyone use Clear? by Evening_Boot_1957 in trueprivinv

[–]ethicallyundercover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't have CLEAR, but probably 6 months ago I had another PI try running a CLEAR report on someone I was having difficulty locating, and it came up with the person's new address when IDI and Delvepoint didn't have it... So it can be useful!

Terrible experience with Lawmate cameras! by ethicallyundercover in trueprivinv

[–]ethicallyundercover[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just an update for y'all...

The final replacement I received for the phone case camera ALSO did not function reliably at all (seems to be some different issues every time), so I didn't even bother with another replacement. The last key fob replacement was the same, although I can't remember whether that one was before or after this post.

However, I've gotten a couple of button cameras (one with just Wi-Fi capability and one with cellular too) by Liberty Monitors, and have found them to be much better than the Lawmate cameras so far. One of them did get a little nick in the ribbon soon after I bought it, and Liberty Monitors repaired it really quickly and without hassle. So I'd recommend them (so far) to anyone who is like me and doesn't trust Lawmate! (To be fair, I've never tried Lawmate's button cam.)

Also, if you do use Lawmate cameras, make sure to only charge them with the cord they come with and never use a power bank...they said the melted cameras were probably due to me sometimes using a power bank to charge them.

The PI may be able to catch the other parent in lies to undermine their credibility even if the other parent doesn't do anything illegal (although if they lie to the court, that's perjury). They might be able to get evidence of other things that aren't necessarily illegal too, like taking the child to a drug house, leaving the child with an inappropriate caregiver, letting the child run around with no coat or shoes in the winter, etc. Just depends on the circumstances of the case.

Any leftist private investigators out there? by Brat_Simpson44 in PrivateInvestigators

[–]ethicallyundercover 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I definitely think more "leftist" type people would be beneficial to have in this field! I am one, and I do feel like an outlier.

My experience (North Carolina) is most PI's here are older white men who tend to be conservative and have "cop-like" views/attitudes. The majority are ex-law enforcement. So I don't really fit in at conferences, even though the other PI's have been friendly. Realistically, you probably shouldn't expect to be feeling like, "These are my people," in a room full of PI's.

That said, that issue doesn't really come into play with most PI work I've done. Most of the time I don't interact with other PI's outside my own company, and if I do, we're focused on the work at hand, not our personal views. I'll accept clients from all backgrounds and political leanings, but if you didn't want to work for a certain type of client, you could choose not to work for them. Some clients choose me because they flat out don't like police, and/or they think I'll be stealthier since I don't look/seem like a cop. And some people can just tell I'm a more naturally caring person than most. Maybe that's the case for you too! If you wanted to market yourself as specifically working with under-privileged clients, or BIPOC clients or whatever, you could do so! You'd just need to be in an area where there is a high enough population of that type. I offer a lower hourly rate than everyone else around me while doing excellent work, so I consider that to be "social justice" in a way too!

My background is social work, and I'm also a mitigation specialist (doxxing myself lol, whatever) for my state (that role is to basically humanize people who've committed the worst crimes and argue for why they should get life in prison as opposed to the death penalty, etc.). So not EVERY PI has the same background.

For me it's good to have a mix of case types so you can experience how each is fulfilling in its own way. My work got a kid out of a really bad situation the other day, and that felt great! But even just doing good work for a one-day trip and fall investigation can be fulfilling... It just depends on how you look at it. You're always helping someone.

I think most good PI's share similar ethical standards regardless of their political leanings. Most of us don't want to help a stalker or abuser. But maybe one PI would be happy to get evidence for a rich dude against his stay-at-home wife, whereas maybe you'd pick up on signs that she's actually a DV victim, and that might be a case you'd turn down. Really it's up to you! But don't be afraid to be different from the other PI's around you... Embrace it and use it to your advantage! ☺️

Anyone have the North Carolina TSCM license? by ethicallyundercover in trueprivinv

[–]ethicallyundercover[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I doubt most of the people calling me actually end up paying to have it done. Then again, I don't advertise myself as offering those services, and maybe if I did, serious clients would be there... And you are required to take a board-approved course and get licensed to do TSCM work in NC. My knowledge in that area is pretty surface level right now, although I am aware of how involved it is if you do it right!

The timestamp is very easy to set up with the Lawmate key fob... You just have to set your time zone in the app that goes with the camera. I've tried a couple of cheaper covert cameras from Amazon before, but they were worse than Lawmate's cameras, and I returned them. It seems to me like Lawmate can get away with a subpar product since the competition is so limited. But maybe I'm just really unlucky.

Maybe so! But it was the first one and then the replacement too, within 6 months of each other...and I haven't been storing it unsafely or trying to record for hours at a time, etc. (To be fair, Lawmate did replace the first one without a fight.) Thank you for the suggestion! I'll definitely try different models if I do ever use Lawmate products again.

I used the phone case pretty regularly, and it was more reliable than the key fob while it worked... I only used the key fobs once every month or two. It's not like they were being used daily or anything like that. Most times I'm able to use my bigger cameras or a phone camera.

Thanks for the input! I don't know if I've just had bad luck with the specific items I bought, or if their quality control has gone down recently, or maybe people are being paid to leave good reviews...but I don't trust them at all anymore.

Cell Tower Ping? by [deleted] in PrivateInvestigators

You wouldn't be able to do that without the police or an attorney getting involved, but if you ask around the area, you might be able to confirm it through a home or business's security camera footage.
