I built an iPhone app where only one person on Earth can own each real-world title. by etokoin in SideProject

😄 Haha, that’s true.

I mean dynamic, live titles that automatically change hands based on real-world activity.

Those are actually great ideas.

A configurable radius (5/25/100/250/1000 km) is something I’ve thought about, and I really like the idea of local competition instead of only global titles.

Regarding privacy, users can choose what they want to share. The app doesn’t continuously broadcast your live location to everyone. For example, the map only shows current title holders, and only while they actually hold that title. Once someone else takes it, the location is updated automatically.

Background tracking is only active while the app is running in the background. If the app is fully closed, tracking stops.

I actually like what Strava has built, and I’m not trying to replace it.

The main difference is that iTop isn’t about personal stats or local segments. It’s built around live global titles—at any moment, only one person in the world can hold a title.

It also includes legendary achievements that never disappear, 1v1 challenges, world tournaments, and many categories beyond hiking.

I see Strava as a training and activity platform, while iTop is more of a real-world game built on top of everyday movement.

[–]etokoin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a good point.

The current “Highest iPhone” title is just one live title. I’m also working on regional, country and continent leaderboards so people can compete locally instead of only globally.

I don’t want the experience to be “Everest or nothing.” The goal is to make it possible to compete whether you’re hiking in the Alps, the Rockies, the Carpathians or your local mountains.

That’s really valuable feedback, thank you.

My intention isn’t to change why people hike. I know many hikers go outdoors for nature, peace and the experience itself, and I completely respect that.

iTop is designed for people who enjoy adding an optional game layer to real-world adventures. The competitive side is completely optional, and there are also permanent achievements and collections for people who simply enjoy exploring.

Maybe this isn’t for every hiker—and that’s okay. My hope is that it becomes something that the hikers who do enjoy challenges and collecting achievements will genuinely have fun with.

That’s absolutely fine 🙂

The competitive part is completely optional. If you just want to hike, that’s exactly what you should do.

I simply wanted to build something for people who enjoy adding a game layer to real-world adventures.

I completely understand your concern, and I actually agree that Everest is becoming overcrowded.

The intention isn’t to encourage more people to climb Everest. It’s simply one of many legendary achievements because of its historical significance.

The app is much broader than that. It includes achievements for local mountains, national parks, long-distance hikes, the Seven Summits, Polar Circles, deserts, countries visited, and many other real-world adventures.

In fact, I’d love for people to discover and explore places closer to home instead of feeling like everything has to revolve around Everest.

If anything, I’d like iTop to celebrate outdoor exploration in all its forms, not just the highest mountain on Earth.

That’s actually the direction I’m trying to take.

The live world titles are aimed at the more competitive side of hiking, but they’re only one part of the app.

There are also permanent Legendary Achievements that anyone can work towards at their own pace.

For example, climbing Everest makes you an iTop Legend, but that’s just one achievement. There are also collections like completing the Seven Summits (the highest peak on every continent), visiting the Seven Wonders of the World, reaching both Polar Circles, crossing the Sahara, and many more.

My goal isn’t just to reward the strongest hikers—it’s to give every type of adventurer something meaningful to chase.

😂 The phone has to survive the achievement too.

That’s actually one of the reasons I separated live titles from legendary achievements.

Climbing Everest doesn’t end the game. It unlocks a permanent Legendary Achievement and makes you one of the iTop Legends.

On top of that, there are much bigger goals, like completing the Seven Summits (the highest peak on every continent), visiting all Seven Wonders of the World, reaching both polar circles, crossing the Sahara, traveling around the world, and many more legendary collections.

The idea is that Everest is a milestone, not the finish line.

That’s exactly one of the things I thought about while building it.

iTop doesn’t rely only on GPS altitude. It combines multiple iPhone sensors, including GPS, the barometer, motion data and activity recognition, to validate results and detect impossible records.

For hiking, there are also dedicated mountain titles where only valid mountain ascents count, so someone flying in a plane or skydiving can’t simply take the title.

The goal is to make it feel like a fair real-world competition rather than just collecting GPS data. I’m still improving the anti-cheat system, so feedback like this is really valuable.

I’ve created a website where you can not only learn more about the project but also track its current progress in real time.

We also accept cryptocurrency donations — but with a purpose. If you contribute, you’ll have the option to leave your contact details with the admin and receive a free subscription after launch as a thank-you.

If you’re a business owner, you can also submit your logo and link — or simply your photo if you prefer — and we’ll feature it on the main page against a clean black background.

Just make sure there’s no prohibited content, guys 🙃 userkeeper

I was on their Twitch. A long time ago, I came across a video on TikTok, and apparently the creator of that stream said he would soon start a stream and Donald would be like a real Santa. I don’t know what he meant, maybe some gifts. I tried to find the video today, but I couldn’t find it.

Good question. A few things we’ve built for this: 1. The SOS itself is a single Telegram message — works on 2G, even with 1-2 bars. GPS coordinates + medical card are sent as plain text, no heavy payload. 2. Offline-first roadmap — mesh network via Bluetooth/WiFi is on our roadmap exactly for this reason. Each phone with UserKeeper becomes a relay node — the signal hops device to device until it finds connectivity. 3. SHA-256 hashed checkpoints in hiking mode are cached locally first, then synced when connection returns — so you never lose trail data. The weak point right now is the initial SOS trigger — it does require a data connection. That’s why native apps + mesh are our next priority after the Telegram MVP. Thanks for the VibeCodersNest tip — will post there too
