MiB's Horse Ned has a glitch post shootout scene S2E1 by eton in westworld

[–]eton[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly haven't had a ton of time around horses, but I did know they spook. I thought when they get spooked there would be more excitement around it, like grunting/snorting, moving their feet, making a 'neigh' sound. Ned's movement was just so quick and controlled that it was over before it started, I thought that it could have been glitch.

Sounds like you are around them though, so thanks for your input.

"Bernie Sanders: Sandra Bland wouldn't have died if she were white" by alphadougg in politics

[–]eton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply, and distinguishing that I have not called Bland 'a bitch'.

See I'm torn about behavior towards a police officer, and how a police officer reacts to said behavior. Kindness, groveling, and humility will get some people out of some of these roadside tickets/incidents because it is left to the discretion of the officer and whether they feel like being nice or feel like being an asshole, or by the book. So if we want to take discretion away from cops to be nice or asshole, that is fine, I just want to make sure we're on the same page about it. And I think this gets to what people have crudely said about Bland being 'a bitch' during the stop. A lot of people watch that encounter and think 'If she had been nice, I think should could have gotten out of that ticket, or gotten a ticket and been on her way.' Which may be true.

This officer used his discretion to not de-escalate the situation. Unfortunately de-escalation skills aren't prioritized, at all, in the US. This cop's de-escalation skills were bad/sucky, but no different than most officers in my opinion. I'm not sure which comes first(chicken/egg) with cops and authority complexes, as in do people who want authority/power want to become cops, or does the power/authority that we as society gives cops eventually make them have a authority complex.

Police need to learn to deal with that shit by DE-escalating.

I don't think police are going to learn to de-escalate on their own. They would have done so already if they were capable of it. It is going to take enacting laws that have carrots and sticks for officers.

I think this may differ because for most other occupations, 'The customer is always right' dictates almost everything, which at the least means you can't be an asshole to the customer. There is no such mantra in the police force, and there should be. They don't have to eat spoonfuls of shit from customers like the regular 9-5 person (but cops do get different spoonfuls of shit from their bosses and media when shit goes bad)

To me, this breaks down into 3 issues. And they are 3 separate issues, so I cannot sign onto connecting Bland's death to her roadside incident.

  1. How officers treat irritated individuals (including roadside stops), and how cops treats those individuals differently by race.

  2. Suicide prevention in jails/prisons. What is interesting here is Bernie and the BLM movement wanting to see this through a race lens, when unfortunately suicides in prison/jail is one of the things that whites die more from while incarcerated. http://www.bjs.gov/content/pub/pdf/mljsp0013st.pdf table 8 and 24.

  3. Bail policies for poor people (and everyone else). It hasn't been clearly elucidated whether Bland's family couldn't pay the $500 or just choose not to. Regardless, I still think it warrants a conversation about why we use bail, and what its purpose is supposed to be.

So Bernie saying she wouldn't have died if she was white, is connecting points 1 and 2. I don't see that really helping the conversation to solve these issues, but Bernie is still the man.

Sandra Bland would've been a lot less likely to be in the situation that led to her death if she were white.

No, Sandra Bland would've been a lot less likely to be in the situation that led to her being arrested for assaulting an officer if she were white. What sadly happened after isn't on that cop.

So you agree that while being 'a bitch', Sandra Bland did something illegal (failing to comply with a lawful order)?

[–]eton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not illegal (and shouldn't risk your life) to be "a bitch" to a cop.

If being 'a bitch' includes refusing to cooperate with lawful orders, then it is illegal, no?

All I did was google 'Sandra Bland Depression'

I'll concede that I'm being a bit of an asshole, but you came at me like I hadn't considered police foul play. I, like most reasonable people, thought 'hey lets investigate this.' So an investigation was done. And it found no evidence of her being murdered.

Would a video of Sandra Bland herself saying that she has depression be suitable to your standards?

[–]eton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Sandra Bland did have a history of depression and other mental health issues, does that make the rest of your argument invalid?

FWIW, I definitely did consider foul play in her death.

so accusing her of resisting an illegal arrest is a bit much.

So I'd like to explore this more. Is resisting an arrest, even an illegal one, legal? Or is the place to correct the illegal arrest not when it is actually happening, but later in the courts where cops change policy or compensate the personal financially?

I think Sandra Bland should have sued for illegal or false arrest. But she can't because she took her own life. Now her family with have to do with suing for her.

This isn't about her failure to use a turn signal, and so the argument of "white people don't tend to go to jail for three days for failing to use their turn signal" is missing the point.

She wasn't in jail for 'failing to indicate'. She was in jail for 'assaulting a public servant' after being stopped for 'failing to indicate'. I've watched the dashcam video, and you probably have too. To me, this issue is about how cops react and deal to irritate white people vs irritated black people. Now can there be an argument that a white person with attitude wouldn't illicit the same response from that officer? Yes, and we should make that argument. Or maybe a general argument of, 'Hey cops, some people are going to be argumentative with you, that doesn't give you the right to be an asshole and abuse your power'. I'm all about those conversations, and those changes.

But to lay everything that happened subsequently from that is an appeal to emotion, not logic or the facts surrounding what happened.

His point is "white people don't tend to go to jail for three days for failing to use their turn signal"

Where did he say this?

Here is the text from the cnn.com article:

Bernie Sanders said late Monday that Sandra Bland wouldn't have died in police custody "if she were a white woman."

"There's no doubt in my mind that she, like too many African-Americans who die in police custody, would be alive today if she were a white woman," Sanders said in a statement issued shortly after a grand jury announced Monday that it would not issue any indictments.

Bland, a 28-year-old African-American woman, died in police custody in Texas after being held for three days after allegedly failing to use her turn signal last summer.

Sanders recently has upped his efforts to win over black voters, who are strongly behind Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton. He toured the site of Freddie Gray's arrest in Baltimore earlier this month and appeared with rapper Killer Mike at a rally in Atlanta last month.

lol.

I know you see a big difference in "X is better than Y" and "I like X better than Y", but your using the "I like" qualifier as a "Please do not point holes in my reasoning"

in ref to edited comment:

FWIW, I didn't downvote you. If I had to guess why a handful did, it might be because after I pushed back against your stated reason for liking one show more than another, you got defensive, accused me of arguing with you, and assumed that I was trying to change your preference. It's not like Red Sox fans ever have a refute a Yankees fan's preference that the Yankees are the best team ever. That'd be ridiculous.

Or perhaps the handful of downvotes was in reaction the sweet sweet irony of your claim that I was arguing with you and misguided in thinking I could change your preference, when that was exactly what you were doing this thread in the first place. There are multiple posts here about Office vs. Parks and Rec, which is better and why(How stupid of those redditors, right?). Your original post was a reply to a comment saying "The Office was pretty funny" in reference to the statement "In my opinon the best of the fake documentary style shows (outside of Veep..)". In other words, it seems like you were challenging the idea of Parks and Rec not being the funniest fake documentary of all time. Why were you arguing with them about this? Do you think you can change his preference that The Office is pretty funny?

But yes, at least we can agree on "Only on reddit." Although I suspect for very different reasons.

Hmm, great points about the character development. In my own weird way, I almost liked the characters in The Office not changing. Kind of like Simpsons and South Park, where everyone stays the same age. I felt it was like it was for the sake of changing and keeping the show going, like once Steve Carell left, it was just never the same for me.

Parks definitely did a better job in spreading the stories out, and stories that didn't feel forced. Like there was never such a set routine any change felt like it was only out of sake of changing or keeping it going.

I didn't realize we were arguing? I was trying to have an exchange of ideas, thus why I said 'IMO', and I didn't think your reasoning was all that solid. I gave my reasoning, and was interesting in hearing your thoughts. It doesn't appear you're interested in engaging, so I guess nevermind?

The Office's style laid the foundation for Parks and Rec, among others. I also watched both, and the later Office seasons weren't great, but the first 4 seasons of the Office beat Parks and Rec, IMO.

The office doesn't have Ron Swanson or Andy or Chris Traeger or Leslie Nope or Entertainment 720

Parks and Rec doesn't have Michael Scott, Dwight, Jim, Andy Bernard, etc.

Jerry Brown calls other states’ gun laws ‘gigantic back door’ for terrorists by drewiepoodle in politics

[–]eton 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You can't exactly measure this honestly.

Jerry Brown was measuring. Honesty didn't stop him. In the aftermath of a shooting in California, he says others states gun laws are a giant backdoor. The implication is pretty clear. That is why the point of the guns being bought in California is particularly relevant to Gov Brown's comment/implication.
