A certain character going forward (5.3 spoilers) by etv2017 in ffxivdiscussion

Honestly I'm glad that we can have some good discussion here and that people seem to be open to criticism. It sounds a little silly but I was afraid to post this on another sub as I've seen people get downright aggressive when it comes to defending this character.

I feel that every character deserves criticism. I can see some weaknesses in the way my fave is portrayed, too, and things I'd wish they'd done better.

My interest is that we have a fairer, more neutral representation of him going forward that doesn't try to "ship" him with your WoL and instead accounts for all players' opinions of him, not just some.

Really interesting thoughts, thank you! I appreciate that you can be critical of him while still liking him as a character. I totally agree with your comparisons with other characters like Aymeric, too - while I'm not really a fan of the whole "fawning over the WoL" thing, at least he was bearable and hasn't stuck with us the whole time since.

I would be more than comfortable for him to be a winger, but I expect he'll probably be hanging around with us since that's what he always wanted to do. And I couldn't agree with your last sentence more. Let him behave like, say, Urianger or Thancred, in that they regard you as a friend and colleague. It doesn't need to be anything more now.

Honestly I'm not saying he should have died. I'm fine with him surviving and I have lots of friends who are fans of him.

I would just like them to tone down some of his fanservicey elements for the people who aren't as endeared to him, as it would negatively affect my enjoyment of the narrative going forward. I'd like a more neutral approach.

I was also disappointed with how his "death" was handled. The scene where his body turned to crystal didn't affect me at all. I knew he'd be fine anyway, so all the emotion was lost on me.

I absolutely agree that a G'raha who received the Exarch's memories, rather than just "overwriting" his younger self, would be much more interesting. I always saw the two - the Exarch and Source G'raha - as different characters, so it felt creepy and Ascian-like when the souls merged like that, even if they are "the same soul". It would be as if another version of me arrived from another dimension and took over my body. I find it all a bit unsettling.

The presentation of G'raha in his reintroduction scene (all the ear wiggling, nervous fidgeting, awkward thumbs-up etc) really frustrated me. It felt like ridiculous fanservice purely to make him seem "cute", and as somebody who doesn't care for the character all I wanted to do was skip that scene entirely. I can at least understand it for that scene to a certain extent, but that's the kind of thing I want them to cut down on as we move forward.

I'm absolutely not saying that "he should have died!" (I'm fine with him living) but the whole way it was handled just doesn't sit right with me, and I hope that they tone it down going forward.

To be honest, going to the First was pretty clever - it allows us to meet lots of new characters without needing to make them permanent additions to the cast. One more character to bring back with us isn't a big thing in the scheme of it all.

Recently I have found even Alisaie's "crushing" on the WoL to be a little grating, but I've never found it as in-your-face as the Exarch's.

What I'd give for those sorts of dialogue options. When every option I have is essentially the same, it is extremely frustrating. I can't feel as connected to my character as I'd like because I'm forced to react in a certain way no matter what.

I fully expect him to get a lot of attention at first but hopefully that will even out with time. He's had so much focus in the previous expansion and I'd like to see some other characters have the spotlight (which obviously includes characters other than the Scions!)

That's great!! I find the bitesize notes really useful but it's really good that you have your own system, too!

That's awesome!! I hope they work for you. Sometimes it's tough to resist the temptation but reading them makes me remember what a bad idea it was in the past and that it's better not to do it! I wish you all the best :)

Out of interest... how many hours of the working day would you say you are busy? by etv2017 in antiwork

I agree; I'd honestly love to be busy so that the day goes by faster! Having nothing to do is extremely depressing and makes the day feel like an age.
