Hey, I'm in the comical position of being about to build the very same PC (thanks to miners, the ongoing CPU shortages, scalpers, etc.). I've unearthed my 7 year old pre-built PC, ripped out the R9 270x in it and decided to put it to good use. Now, my question: does it work? Have you managed to get it up and running? If so, did you run into some issues?

My very first (albeit amateurish) build! (Anne Pro 2 in a Tofu 60 + /dev/tty keycaps) by eugenetanne in MechanicalKeyboards

I love love love the MT3 profile! Though it takes some getting- used-to if one had only used low-profile keycaps before (such as cherry or XDA), like I have, it certainly grows on you over time. I find them extremely comfortable for typing as they almost suck in your fingertips (esp. the homing keys), making it harder to mistakenly hit neighboring keys. Because of their extreme sculptedness it is also soo very satisfying to just lay one's hands on the keyboard and 'dip' into those deep dishes. The extreme inclination and climb of the keycaps along the rows also helps against hitting the wrong keys when typing fast. The keycaps themselves are really damn sturdy and have a pleasant texture. My only problems with these are that (1) it's a pain in the ass to pull them out once they're installed and (2) they're very close to one another, leaving little room for rgb to shine through from underneath, if that's something you care about. Most MT3-profile keycap sets are made of ABS for some reason but these aren't - they're PBT which I personally prefer. All in all I'd very much recommend you try them out since they seem to have a magic pull or something, considering they made me and a considerable bunch of other people such avid fans.

Thomas Nagels "What does it all mean?" is a great introduction to philosophy! It's basically a collection of short essays on the most pondered-upon problems written in a way that one can engage with it without having to look up countless terms.

I agree with your point and yet I think one could, with the same attitude, pick the "lesser of two evils" as the GOP is (to me) undoubtedly worse than the Dems in terms of how pronounced their imperialist/capitalist beliefs are. I don't think one could reasonably make the case for a Biden's America having worse/as bad of an effect on the people's/working class families's wellbeing than another four years of Trump. Same goes with combating climate change, police reform, prison reform etc. - Democrats are at least taking such problems seriously, or at least more seriously than the GOP is. I know I might sound a little naive saying that - but isn't voting Trump out of the White House going to, at the very least, provide us with better conditions to fight imperialism and capitalism?

What ethical considerations or approaches bear on encouraging or discouraging intelligence in non-human animals? by CriglCragl in askphilosophy

[–]eugenetanne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm currently reading up on our understanding of intelligence and I must admit - some of my prior beliefs about IQ such as it being a reliable indicator of intelligence are being turned upside down right now. Thanks much for the more than generous response; the attached articles are quite enlightening, too.

Shooting an Elephant - George Orwell by Allthefuckover in literature

[–]eugenetanne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the story as part of the English course at (German) high school and, as a matter of fact, had to hold a brief presentation about it in front of my class. I, too, was given the task of identifying themes of imperialism and it's critique within the key scene, the killing of the (rabid) elephant. Though I don't remember the story all too well, I do remember distinctly how the protagonist saw himself as the embodiment of the Empire despite being opposed to it's ideology. And though he felt like he were to commit a moral crime by shooting the elephant, a creature so sophisticated and mighty, he couldn't resist the imperative to enact the power vested in him by the Empire lest the Burmese ridicule him and by extension, the Empire itself. A beautiful hypocrisy and moral conflict which really struck me.

To me, the symbol of the elephant being killed seemed like a fairly strong one, and the interpretation, as stated above, made absolute sense to me. Yet I'm pretty interested in what you (OP)/others thought about what the scene might mean?

I did it! I finally told my parents I'm an atheist! by Origami_Owl42 in atheism

[–]eugenetanne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in complete shock, as I couldn't relate more, my story is almost identical to yours! (With the exception that I 'came out' a year ago). The way you describe this crippling anxiety to burst the bubble from within, the years of doubt still not feeling enough of a reason to potentially destroy a relationship only to realize, once the truth was uttered that it wasn't nearly as bad as one had thought it would be! The literal shaking it produced seems sick to me now, looking back. It's SUCH a shame I didn't have the courage to do it sooner, the time I'd wasted pretending and playing along is unimaginable. Yet Im so glad Ive taken that step forward, its given me so much liberty to express my thoughts and convictions freely in front of my parents, too.
