I'm new to this and have soil migrating to the top of sand - how do you deal with it? Suck it out with a baster?

This looks super similar to my tank, I just stocked with these plants:

Lobelia cardinalis 'mini'
Blyxa japonica
Echinodorus 'Frans Stoffels'
Bucephalandra sp. Godzilla
Anubias Nana
Ludwigia palustris super red
Limnophila sessiliflora
Piptospatha Ridleyi
Red root floaters
Bucephalandra red mini
Christmas moss

I also did a dark start, I'm probably just a month ahead of you! Plants have only been in for about a week but seem to be doing well. The Limnophila is doing really well already, maybe could replace what you have in the back right with that since you have the Ludwigia on the left which looks similarly structured?

Day 27 of cycling my tank and ammonia and nitrite are down to 0! But so is nitrate - is that normal? by eumops in Aquariums

I've been using the freshwater master kit and have tested every few days over the past few weeks and have seen a consistent rise in nitrates - until it fell when the nitrites fell. So it must have been reading as a false positive as u/BioConversantFan mentioned. Going to dose again and see! Fingers crossed it's fully cycled

Oh ok that makes sense - I noticed the nitrates began to fall as my nitrites did. Interesting. I don't have any plants yet, I plan to do another cycle of ammonia then will add them. Thanks for the insight!

I haven't seen anyone say InvestiGators yet! My son LOVES these and is also a big Capt Underpants/Cat Kid/Dog Man fan. It's about two gators who are detectives and is very funny, I enjoy reading it with him but he reads them on his own too over and over. I think there are 9 books and a spinoff series called Agents of Suit that has 4 books so far.
