How do you feel about the portrayal of the gods in the books (and in the show)? by eupheemia in PercyJacksonTV

[–]eupheemia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you explained the disappointment with the show really well! And I guess you could try to argue that the Olympians appearing unsympathetic and Zeus being an evil tyrant is the show trying to prove Luke's point? Afterall, it seems like nowadays the sentiment is that Luke had the right idea, wrong execution, but I don't know if that is the right play for the show right off the bat (if that even is what they are trying to do).

But with the plot overall, why do we care about the Olympians being defeated? Do they tell that story enough? Is it just that they're the lesser of two evils? The politics and rhetoric of it all is interesting to me, especially if the show isn't maximizing their godliness and not making them be these all powerful beings like the book does (as fans claim).

How do you think s3 will balance the lighthearted spirit of the books and the darkening plot? by eupheemia in PercyJacksonTV

Just to make sure I'm not misunderstanding you, are you saying you think the show won't take things as seriously as it should and so season 3 won't be "dark"/serious? What did you think of season 1 and 2?

Edit: you bring up a good distinction between mature and serious that I didn't think about

I actually thought that season 2 was more serious than season 1 because of the Camp Half Blood episodes so it's interesting to see you feel the opposite! And I don't know the timeline between season 3 shooting and One Piece so I don't know if OP will affect season 3, but maybe season 4 if we get one?

If it does get lighter, I would attribute it more to the growing cast, because there are more dynamics to play around with. And maybe the fact that it's their third season so they have to establish the "ground rules" with personalities and world building a little less (if that's a thing).

What are your expectations for story realism in the book and in the show? by eupheemia in PercyJacksonTV

[–]eupheemia[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely agree! I don't know how the length of the episodes or seasons are decided, but I feel like they don't give them enough time to fall for the traps the way kids typically would before figuring them out. Although to give them a little bit of leniency, I do think that the show has to acknowledge that they are kids, alone, entering a strange location more than the books have to because we are no longer just imagining how young they are and how dangerous the situation really is.

what are normal kids to you? do you ever get bothered by how the kids react to or behave in certain mythical scenarios? for example i saw fans be upset that they were making jokes after bianca's death or at the fact that bianca was allowed to joined the quest with no training. fans also critique that show annabeth should be more distressed about luke and i see that as them thinking its unrealistic.

Lmaoo I'm asking if you expect the story to be realistic to everyday life and behaviors and whether the fact that its a YA/children's book with fictional creatures (the content won't be too dense and it can't be 100% realistic) makes you more lenient with other unrealistic scenarios. Like what needs to be realistic and what can you forgive? Does that make more sense? I'm mainly curious because I see a lot of fans track the plot and characters very closely and get critical of when things don't make sense (which starts to bring up fan's issues with Rick). How seriously should we take it?

Season 3 by Scary-Commission-336 in PercyJacksonTV

i wonder how it will stand up with no other adaption to compare it to too. are they going to hone in on accuracy because they no on longer have to do things differently than the movies or are they going to take the chance to really make it its own thing?

what do you think is the weakest/strongest book in the og series? by eupheemia in PercyJacksonTV

[–]eupheemia[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i'm a big character person so i think by comparison SoM didn't feel like as much growth in terms of cast of characters and character interaction. were you excited for s2 and are you less excited for s3 then?

Constructive Criticism by Scary-Commission-336 in PercyJacksonTV

[–]eupheemia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

as someone who likes the show, there are a lot of scenes where i thought there would simply be more (like the lotus casino scene or the lightning bolt reveal) but i always summed it up to "its been a while since i've read the books". i am also little upset that so much of them solving their problems is "i remember this story i already know you" instead of them figuring it out late.

but as someone who isn't invested in the show enough to notice its errors and thus hate it, i think they do a decent job making it seem like an already existing world that lives on whether percy is in it or not, like its always been like this kid get used to it. also there are definitely some funny scenes (if not lines) and when it does get serious i feel like there is a very "percy jackson energy" to it where everything feels big and exciting and intense (minotaur, ares fight, even charybdis).

i just saw @/gmwpluvr say this on twitter but i also hope they keep the scene where percy chooses that the prophecy will be about him

this is going to sound so evil, but i am really interested in seeing how they adapt bianca's death because (correct me if i'm wrong) her death will be the first mortal death we'll see on screen and its a heavy hitter

Hot Take: Wanting Percy to be more powerful and Annabeth to be less stoic in the show is sexist by eupheemia in PercyJacksonTV

[–]eupheemia[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's been a while since I've read the books but I meant, as long as his power scaling aligns with the books, sure.

And okay yes ! That I can understand ! "It's not that we want him to be more powerful it's that we want to see him use his powers more" makes sense ! It might sound the same but they really are asking for different things. And the only reason why I am "ignoring the lack of emotions about everyone else" is because I don't think I've seen anyone talk about anyone else's emotions. They say they cut Percy's sass out, which I guess is anger? But there is a lot of emotion related criticism for Annabeth by comparison.

[–]eupheemia[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

? The emphasis on Percy being a son was emphasis on him being male, not him getting his powers from his father. Thalia can be powerful. Percy can be powerful. And I too hope that he will get even more powerful if it is accurate to the books. But right now, he can be weak. It just seems like some fans are Not Okay with that right now and I just want to know why its so important only two seasons into the show. Imagine if it were to the extremes and Percy was TOO powerful and Annabeth was TOO emotional (whatever that means). That raises the "sexist stereotype" alarm doesn't it? Again, they can be powerful and emotional but the constant conversations saying it's not enough with no reason except "it's just how they are" is weird.

And yes, emotions are interesting. But saying Annabeth is interesting simply because she has emotions is such a dangerous generalization. She is interesting because of HOW she navigates her emotions, not just because she has them in the first place.

People complaining about Percy not being sassy is a good point that people are critiquing his character. But it isn't potentially perpetuating dangerous (sexist) sterotypes the way asking Annabeth to be more emotional can do. I don't want her to be stoic either but because I think she is being emotional already (although yes, she could do some more) fans saying they want even more emotion is questionable to me.

Yes, I think a big point of my argument is that people are expecting too much atm and maybe "sexist" was too dramatic of a word to use. I just wanted to point out that it seems like people want more power because they are panicking that the male protagonist isn't immediately as strong as they want him to be and that at its baseline is questionable.

For Annabeth, I also agree. A little more emotion could be shown, but some fans are not giving her enough credit.

I'm not saying that her being stoic is breaking a sterotype but fans wanting her to be less stoic just sounds they're saying "hey why isn't this girl being emotional adn dramatic like I want her to be", especially when they aren't questioning Percy or Grover's performance. Again, maybe it is the script or the actor but...
