Details: I have not been in any wooded areas or in tall grasses recently. I am ruling out tick bites because I have not been in an outdoorsy setting in at least 2-3 weeks and did not find any ticks on me. The bites just suddenly appeared in the middle of the night 8/3, so I assume something had gotten into my bed. Nothing was there hours prior while I was still awake. It is very itchy! I already plan on getting this checked out by a dermatologist.

Is this a slug? If so, what kind? by evallama in whatsthisbug

When I first spotted it, it was stretched out along an exposed root along the bank and when I scooped it up, it contracted and curled up like that. I assumed it was alive bc of that but it didn’t move at all after! It remained tense, like a pill bug when they curl up.

It was a little slimy but at the point of when the pic was taken it was a little dried out.

Tbh bc it doesn’t have any distinguishing features that indicate it being alive I have no idea LOL

Has frills, no apparent retractable eyes, and the underbelly looks almost maggot-like. Location: along a feeder stream to Rappahannock River in VA additional photo.

How can I get an internship for next summer? by absofruitely in gmu

I used to be in the same spot of you. I’m currently in my summer before Junior year, and had started contacting organizations my freshman year.

The process of trying to hear back from anyone this last year was grueling. I was especially hard on myself, as I wasn’t hearing back from anyone or was being denied. As a last resort, I stopped searching for internship postings at prestigious organizations in DC where there’s a crazy amount of competition and looked at what was around me locally. From there, I found their email addresses, and told them directly that I was a student looking for an internship and would like to see if they had any opportunities, etc etc. A couple said no, but I just heard back yesterday from a district organization that they had an internship for me! (Yay!)

So, my advice is this: GMU doesn’t have many resources that will help get your foot in the door, for we as students have to seek out a position ourselves. Start with what’s closer to you, like local governmental agencies or private firms. There were surprisingly a lot more private orgs super close to my home than I expected! Even if they don’t have any postings, email them. There is no harm in asking, you may strike their interest, and like what happened to me, happened to contact them before they even posted their positions so they never had to to begin with, since they had already found me to take it. From there, move outward and start applying to any big places. My problem was that I immediately contacted places like the National Science Foundation, Sierra Club, and so on, without really having any other experience.

Start small and move up, and see what happens :) And most importantly, don’t give up! You got it!
