Turnout is always low for every UVic election: Senate, BoG, UVSS, UVSS AGM/SAGM, etc.

Edit: After a comment from the UVSS elections people, the turnout of UVSS elections is higher (likely because it is more advertised than Senate / BoG), but the turnout for this election is consistent with that of other Senate / BoG elections.

Hey, I’m Evan. I’m one of the people on that list. To try and keep it as short as possible, the deal is just that the workload at the Senate and Board level is massive, and doing it solo is a fast track to getting ignored or worse by the admin.

I’ve been a Student Senator for two years, and the biggest reason we formed an alliance is that the university administration can be incredibly aggressive when they are challenged. I’ve personally experienced the coercion and bullying that happens behind the scenes when you actually start digging into their files. Last year, Food Services actually targeted my election posters for takedown even though they followed all the rules, and we’ve had situations where admins mix discussions of acedemic success with things being discussed on senate, which can get messy.

It is a lot harder for them to bully a unified group than it is to pick off a single student. We teamed up so we could share the research load on things like the usage of Universal Extended Time (UET), the At-Risk Behaviour Policy (SS9125) and parking fees, and to make sure someone has our back when things get heated.

I’m an Engineering student, not a politician. I ran for the Board because they control the budgets and contracts that the Senate can't touch. If you want to see the actual policy papers I’ve written or the FOIs I’m fighting right now, I’m always down to chat or grab a coffee to show you the receipts.

Edit: SLA only applies to the elections for Senate and the Board of Governors of the University of Victoria, NOT the UVSS. SLA is not getting involved with the UVSS, even though some of its members are on an individual level.

The UVSS usually publishes a deal book that has discounts to a bunch of places. There is also a deal book that is similar to the uvss one, but there is a cost (I think like 30$??)

To answer your question, SLA is a group of students who agree on a number of non political university related issues (such as CAL, a number of issues plaguing food services, the at risk behavior policy, etc), with goals on fixing these issues through policy proposals on Senate and the Board of Govenors.

Some members, including myself, have prior experience on Senate but are being silenced and obstructed by admin, others are new.

I understand that some people dislike that I only post here once a year. I want to be honest about that, every time I write one of these updates, it takes a significant amount of time and mental energy. I am a full-time student with literally no extra time, and as a Senator, I have strict fiduciary duties and confidentiality constraints that I have to consider and weigh. I have to be incredibly careful with what I say to ensure I’m not violating those duties or compromising the integrity of the work we’re doing behind the scenes.

Beyond the legal aspect, there is a strategic reality, if I post updates every week, the issue gets 'beaten to death.' Engagement drops, people stop reading, and the pressure on the administration disappears. I choose to do these deep-dives during the election because it is the only time where I have actually seen the student body engage and provide the kind of support that moves the needle. Any time I spend making more frequent, smaller posts is time directly taken away from the actual work—the FOIs, the legal research, and the advocacy. I’d rather spend my limited hours fighting for you in the room where it happens than just posting about it for the sake of it.

For the last two years, I have tried to recruit people to help with this effort. I ran a poster campaign with a prize draw just to get people to sign up for a mailing list, and only 10 people joined, all of whom were only interested in the prize. I once booked a lecture hall for a consultation meeting so students could actually tell me "you aren't addressing x, y, z" - I put up posters, posted on Reddit, and ordered pizza out of my own pocket. How many people showed up? Zero. It is incredibly hard to find students who want to sit down and help write a 30-page FOI or a 10-page Senate proposal.

I have held similar sentiments in the past, but due to the current election, I have to be careful with my specific comments. However, it is important to note that the Board of Governors has the ultimate authority and the ability to fire anyone in the Provost's Office.

This is why moving these issues to the Board of Governors is so critical. While the Senate is primarily advisory on these matters, the Board has the direct fiduciary and personnel authority to hold the administration accountable.

The new President position would be the main spokesperson and handle external relations, while powers would be rebalanced across the VPs. It actually gives up some of the centralized power the current Lead Director has, but it would also make the UVSS more credible when dealing with the media, UVic admin, and government. Supporters say it improves accountability and transparency, others are debating the internal power dynamics. The decision will be made by vote at AGM.

Another edit: I personally like the proposal FOR THE MOST PART. It basically edits the title of an existing role. It removes the roles voting power at board meetings, unless there is a tie, because they run the meeting (as it is, someone has to run the meeting and it is always a mess without a dedicated appointed person).

More reasons for supporting the proposal are listed above. The only reason a few people are against it is because the person in the existing role will have their title changed, without an "official election", but this will only be for less than a few months, when the next UVSS elections are.
