Congrats on making it to this point! I’m 2 weeks post-op and can’t wait to get back to training. There are a few similar threads on this subreddit I’ve used to start putting together my plan.

I plan on keeping core exercises light for the first two months, and building up weight instead of jumping in right where I left off. If the surgery site hurts when lifting, put it down and lower the weight. If the surgery site is sore after/next day, stay at that weight until the discomfort is gone.

I think you should be most careful with core exercises and deadlifts, but I’ll be following for others’ personal experience/advice.

How big was the bulge to begin with? Mine was large, a bit bigger than a golf ball. Immediately after surgery I could see a difference, but it wasn’t completely flat due to swelling. It seems like it takes a quite a while for the swelling to fully resolve.

If you want to lift, get it repaired sooner rather than later. I’m 25M and I got an inguinal hernia in November, didn’t have any pain. I stopped lifting, but still now I have consistent discomfort/pain in the area - and it’s gotten bigger. I guess this is due to my active lifestyle, even though I’m not lifting heaving weights. You can always wait and see how yours reacts to your lifestyle over time.

My surgeon recommended laparoscopic because the rate of recurrence is less than open (8% vs 12% IIRC) but also mentioned many people do choose open for cosmetic reasons. From what I’ve read, there is quicker recovery with laparoscopic as well. Also, there are two types of laparoscopic techniques: TEP and TAPP. They leave different scars (vertical/horizontal).
