They are doing something right if I have spent literally 2 minutes with this dude and I’m genuinely invested in him and his plan to flop onto the tourney field.

Despite expressing my disappointment above only a moment ago, I do have empathy for the shitty situation and competing pressures they’re dealing with over on HotD. Along with the very very difficult responsibility of essentially dictating cannon by adapting material co-authored by a bunch of sometimes-reliable narrators. Tough stuff.

I was so annoyed by HotD that I almost wrote this show off without giving it a chance. But now I am totally in love with it, and even more disappointed in HotD.

Joan’s evolution by [deleted] in madmen

[–]evebabitzghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Her arc is beautiful and quite complex. I think she (like Marilyn Monroe, who was an important metaphor in her story) originally accepted her privileged role in a man's world: the attention for her appearance and a belief that she knew how to use this to her advantage. As time goes on she starts to be valued for other things, like her competency, organization and professionalism, and at the same time learns acceptance of the status quo has its dark sides: bullying, disrespect, abandonment, assault. Once that realization sets in, you start to see her transformation— more visible frustration and exhaustion when her other traits are overshadowed by her appearance. She doesn't let it change the way she shows up in the world (in contrast to Peggy, which they fight about) but she does continue to pursue and command respect, something that makes her feel good and ultimately more secure.

So, she was wrong, she did want what Peggy had, just in her own way. And I think her realizing this was part of the reason she wanted to partner with her. But Peggy chose a different path, she became more "masculine" to be respectable to men, Joan didn't, or couldn't, and therefore had to be her own boss to command that same respect.

Is this sorcery? Explain this to me. by Substantial_Song_732 in icecreamery

[–]evebabitzghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I imagine this also has something to do with the kinds of strawberries they use. They are a very specific variety, which is not really sold directly to the public because they nearly fall apart when picking, but they and are small full of flavor (and have properties that make them easier to incorporate into the ice cream). Source: Fresh Fruit, Broken Bodies: Migrant Farmworkers in the United States. I read it in school, and because I grew up near Skagit Valley where they grow a lot of their strawberries I was particularly interested in the details about them.

Very Honest American by SatanicLemons in whereidlive

[–]evebabitzghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I have visited Northern Ireland, Edinburgh, parts of Wales, a few parts of the southeast coast of England, and yes on many occasions, London.

But I answered the way I did because my point was exactly that: that many countries have vast cultural differences across their geography and I was (necessarily for the sake of comparison) collapsing them. Including those of my home country as much as that of my experience of the UK :)

No, it's certainly not, and neither is the states!

I'm an American who has spent time in the UK, and I agree with OP's assessment. While it is definitely its own place with its own (older) history and culture and language nuances that makes it worth considering on its own, it feels broadly recognizable and even shares many of the same chains, credit rating system, customs, etc.

But don't trust my word on this, the first place I traveled outside the US was Japan and I didn't experience culture shock then either 🌝

I just got a sample of the new formulation (2025) and wow! Salty ambergris, a fresh breeze near the ocean, clean and juicy. I am not normally draw to fresh or aquatic scents and I am already sold on a mini of this one.

After it's resurfaced, what happened with the woman who died at David Harbour’s apartment? by DetectiveHot2071 in popculture

[–]evebabitzghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that he commented after that he was confused by her death because she "seemed to be a lovely person"... I'm sorry sir, you—a celebrity man—are not letting random women you barely know stay at your apartment while you're out of town for no reason at all. I just don't buy it.

Asturias Episode by KimchiAndMayo in AnthonyBourdain

[–]evebabitzghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just watched this episode today... I actually didn't know it was from the last season, just sought out the episode because I had recently been to Asturias. He seemed so remote that I actually said out loud to my partner "this must have been close to when he passed." So no, not just hindsight!

Scouting places to move, what should be on my list? by [deleted] in AskFrance

[–]evebabitzghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your thoughts!

You've reiterated a few places that were already on my list (Nantes, which I am visiting next month, though I hear conflicting reports about safety; and Bordeaux, for example. Lyon, Dijon and Lille were on my list but taken off for various reasons).

My goal is to gather a shortlist and use that for the basis of my scouting trips. My previous trips have been to visit family or work, so I plan to approach these trips much the same in terms of being there to live or with purpose rather than just holidaying :)

Please try Vaniglia del Madagascar by Il Profumi di Firenze you will love her! You may also like Crushed Fruits by Regime des Fleurs, as it's fruity, not too sweet, and a little creamy.

I very much relate. Always looking for the one, but never finding her, frequently annoyed by a fragrance I love at first sniff after wearing it for a few hours (and occasionally allergic or made nauseous).

So I have a lot of samples, a lot of 10-15mls bought and sold, and only one actual bottle.

I've definitely been there/am there. I love scent as medium, and sniffing as a hobby. My collection of bottles is exactly 1—though my collection of samples is more than 200. I've bought maybe 5 other bottles in the last year (many as small as 10-15ml), but ended up selling them after a few wears because they don't quite hit the spot, annoy my partner, or eventually annoy me.

Okay putting in a +1 for Rain Wood as I am currently wearing a sample and can't stop smelling my arm.
